Why is there not a power slide option to buy?
There are no contractual reasons with any internal or external parties that prevents the Prestige Power Slide from being sold in the Paragon Market.
... 2) if we sell a component of the Collector Edition Perks (clothing or Power)...would we sell the VIP/Destined One badge, too? |
I'm not much of a badger and don't have a strong opinion one way or another, but I kind of lean toward what I thought was the current policy regarding the sale of badges on the market, which is to say, no. Not that I personally would mind, but I worry about the conclusions people would draw from that, namely that every costume pack from now until the end of time would have a new badge in it that you could only get by buying the full package, thus "forcing" badgers to buy everything. The hostility would only be worse coupled with the current trend of making so many items available only for a limited time. And that's assuming the people drawing those conclusions were wrong. If they were right... you'd a have a pretty serious mess on your hands.
So for that reason, I vote "sell the stuff you already sell -- costume items and powers -- but not badges." Toss them up there as individual items and not as a package deal to save on the confusion, badge-wise.
Or, you know, just strip out the foot-glow and sell the Slide au natruale. I already have the glowy version, and I'd still be willing to pay a little (a little, like two or three bucks -- it's just Sprint, after all) for a plain one.

For the record, the name of the power is Prestige Power Slide. This is a Prestige Power called Slide, not a Prestigious power called Power Slide. It's just like the pre-order Sprints: Prestige Power Rush, Prestige Power Quick, etc. You don't call those Power Rush and Power Quick do you? |
POWERSLIDE!!!
FUN FACT: That burst of light when you level up is actually the effectiveness escaping from your enhancements all at once.
So the most important questions are.
1. If they are collectors edition where is there current location we can buy and collect the boxed sets?
2. What retailers are you currently using and supplying the collectors edition?
By merely stating that they are collector editions they should be available for collection at any time for any one who wants to collect them.
I have manged to collect all the electronic limited goodies except the Praetorian special loading screens.
The other players spend more money. You invest that money into a better game for me. If that content doesn't require me to spend points as a VIP to obtain. I get more out of my money.
If you make a freedom version the powers. Slide different color. Costume parts 10% resistant to color changes. Translucent cloak 10% more solid. Arachnos Symbols 10% smaller. Legally anything that is 10% different is technically different.
But I would expect that it would be clever marketing strategy to make an anniversary of the City of Heroes collectors boxes to make an electronic version available for a limited time on the 7th year of there initial release approximately when COH freedom went on line.

i have no issues with these items being offered again despite having purchased them when they were first released, but i'm not going to try to justify it by denying existing reality and substituting my own.

There's also the possibility that they might be planning similar purchasable travel powers, like fire slide, ice slide, water slide, light slide, smoke slide, and so on, and that the power slide mightn't really be needed after that, especially if the new sldies were tintable.

When I bought the Collector's Editions I did so I could have and use the costume stuff: Wether it was exclusive or not didn't factor into it at all, I just wanted it available to *me* (I guess proving I'd eventually be a sucker for micro-transactions). Anyway, I'd personally rather see those old assets getting used by everybody who could enjoy them rather then held to a smaller number by some desire to make earlier players or eBay hunters feel cool, so I'd say unleash them. Sell them, give them out as vet reward, make them a perk for subscribing during a certain time period, shove them in a virtual card pack; Whatever works.

NCsoft does not currently stock in our inventory nor currently distribute the CoH or CoV Collector's edition boxes..., but some can still be found online. (17 COV : CE in stock and 1 CoH: CE in stock on Amazon.com at the time of this post.) [Please note that I do not know if that is a typo or error by Amazon. I just used Google. <--I'm seriously not trying to be snarky, just helpful.]

I have the CoV and the CoX CE. I could care less if the items were sold in the store.

1) the primary reason cited above (i.e. maintaining exclusivity for those that purchased the Collector's Editions), and
2) if we sell a component of the Collector Edition Perks (clothing or Power)...would we sell the VIP/Destined One badge, too? |
1) It has been exclusive for six or seven years. I just feel there's enough precedent to establish that "exclusive" always has an implicit "...for a long time" behind it, and there has been plenty enough time passed that those who bought the Collector's Edition have gotten their money's worth of exclusivity.
2) We're not talking about giving the stuff away for free. People will still be having to pay for it, either through direct purchase of Paragon Points or through the monthly VIP subscription fee that grants them the Paragon Points stipend. So you would still be upholding the "we won't give away for free something people have had to pay for" philosophy.
3) As you mentioned, buying the Collector's Edition has not been the exclusive way to get the in-game goodies that came with it. The stuff in it was repackaged later and sold as "Hero Gear" kits.
4) I feel that by not offering the items on the Paragon Store, you are indirectly allowing an even worse option, which is people selling them through a secondary market such as eBay. Some people buying them there are bound to get ripped off, and as has been mentioned earlier in this thread, some people are grossly overpaying for the items based on an artificial scarcity that can easily be remedied.
Here's what I propose. Feel free to ignore or take into consideration as little or as much as you want.
The in-game exclusive items from the CoH Collector's Edition should be bundled into one package and sold on the Paragon Market. Buying the items separately shouldn't be an option. I know some people might not like it, but I do agree that allowing someone to simply buy the VIP badge isn't very cool. Also, it's not like you could buy bits and pieces of the Collector's Edition or Hero Gear kit before, so while some may complain about, "I just want the cape and you're making me buy a stupid badge that I don't want!", in reality, what they're paying for is the entire kit--just as those who bought it originally did.
The original Hero Gear Kit sold for US$20. Translating that to Paragon Points, that should make it 1,600 points. However, I honestly think that would be a bit high and cause undue outrage for a very, very few in-game items. As a reasonable compromise, I think it would be worth it to split the price in half, and consider $10 of the $20 to have been for the physical swag. I think a fair and reasonable price for the cape, prestige power slide, and VIP/Destined One badge would be 800 Paragon Points.
The City of Villains Collector's Edition only came with a couple of chest emblems. I think a fair price for it would be 400 Paragon Points. I can't remember the difference in price between CoV and CoV:CE; I think it was around $20. But CoV:CE focused more on physical swag than in-game items, with seven HeroClix and an art book. The difference in Paragon Points between the CoH:CE and CoV:CE in-game items reflects that difference.
Undoubtedly, there are a very few people who would yell about having to pay $X on eBay for the items and now they're being sold for $10. Still, I think there would a lot more people who are delighted to have access to stuff that they might not even have known about back when it was released to retail. Plus, like I said, I think it would behoove Paragon Studios to help people who might want the items in the future avoid having to pay exorbitant amounts for it (money, I have to point out, that NCsoft/Paragon Studios get exactly $0.00 of) and risk getting ripped off in the process.
We've been saving Paragon City for eight and a half years. It's time to do it one more time.
(If you love this game as much as I do, please read that post.)
The prestige power slide, the Cape of Four Winds, the Arachnos Chest Emblem, Arachnos Cape emblem, and the VIP/Destined One badges have just been in Collectors Editions. If they were available in the store as a pack, I'd up the price on them compared to other items as to keep them a little exclusive to those who did pay for the Collectors Editions back in the day. The preorder sprints and helmets, and GameStop enhancements were probably put on the rewards because they were only available before the items actually came out. As well, many people did preorder GR off NCSoft to get the Demon Summoning and Dual Pistols powersets early, which sort of made it so they wouldn't buy GR in a brick and mortar store.

Now the flip side:
The original games were 29.99 (COH) and 39.99 (COV). The Collector's Editions were 49.99 (COH) and 79.99 (COV). We subtract the base amounts from the CEs to eliminate things like discs, subscriber time and manuals. So now the total for all the extra goodies is 60.00. Of that, to be extremely generous, we cut it in half to eliminate all the physical items such as the Heroclix, artwork and maps. Now the total is 30.00. That is equal to 2400 Paragon Points. As we are well aware, it is more expensive to buy things in the Paragon Market then from the NCSoft store or at retail locations, so we add another 400 Points just because.
So, 2800 Paragon Points for 2 capes, 1 emblem, 1 slide power and 1 badge. Keeps the price roughly equivalent to the original prices, but still less than the eBay prices. Everybody wins!

Oh well.

i make stuff...
Selling it as a package - a la the Gear Kit - would seem like it would make a certain amount of sense. Not selling a badge, per se, but selling a pack that replicates an old pack that happens to contain a badge. If it needed to be time-limited it might make sense to go up on the market for the anniversary month each year.
Given how long ago these were released and labeled as "exclusive," I think it shows more goodwill to make them broadly available to current customers than to retain the exclusivity on the items indefinitely. And I say this as someone who bought and applied these to more than one account. |
Just don't include any 'price point' with the badge, make it part of the pack for 'free' with the set. Heck, make it an inexpensive set too, because it all exists in game already, no real development needs to be done to make it happen, so nobody gets upset over being 'price gouged' for a badge. If they were true badge collectors, they would have already gone through the effort of getting it before now anyway, so it's a moot point.
...and if they haven't, that's all the more reason to make it available in some way to them.

That said. I would LOVE for it to be available to anyone who wants it. It may be that one perfect thing for someone's character who's missing out because they didn't get into the game soon enough.
I'm all about options. We've had our exclusivity (that's what we paid for) as old as these options are, well into long enough. If the pre-orders can be made options, these should as well.
Time-gate it like during the month of our Anniversary, fine, like the other holiday gear. Then for a whole year they can enjoy the same exclusivity of it we have, for those who come after, or don't get it in time, until next year.
It's all good, and the more options players have for their characters, the better this game is for it.

So, just to reiterate, you're calling ((either Positron or BABs, I cannot remember at this point and I cannot find the post)) a liar when he said that certain people would have to leave the company before ya'll would be able to sell the collector's stuff?
|
Other people hypothesized that it could be some sort of contractual thing (which never made any sense to me... if it was a contractual thing that meant they couldn't make it available, that sounds like the person/entity that owned the rights were no longer a part of the company... which also doesn't make much sense at all... how does an mmorpg lose the rights to something currently within their own game).
So, no... It does not mean he's calling anyone a liar.
It most likely means that people clung to hypothetical notions based off of an obscure comment made somewhat off the cuff.
Or, otherwise known as... typical fare.

So I had bought this game May 7th 2004.(about a week after launch)
I've been subscribed ever since , when the HEro Gear Kit came out I was like sweet and quickly bought one.
I bought the CoV:CE in December of 05 and loved it ever since.
I frequently use Prestige Power Slide, and toyed around with a couple of concepts using the Arachnos Logo but none of them ever stuck. I also find myself using the Pocket D Teleporter and the Jump Jet a reasonable amount of times.
As someone that has all of the items from these editions, and has had them for years, I do not care about exclusivity for these items. In fact when the Super Boosters started becoming frequent I had actually suggested a Hero Gear booster that features the in game items for these editions.
Now that we have the Paragon Market and this discussion has come up again, I'm going to reiterate that as an owner of these items I do not care about the exclusivity and would LOVE to see these items make their way onto the market.

He never reads the forums, so I asked him his feelings about the Devs putting the exclusive goodies up for sale in the Paragon Market. He said he would have no problems with it.
And if I had bought the collectors edition when he bought his, I know I would not have a problem seeing these up for sale in the market.
That said...impish grin...I want that Arachnos Cape ! I would seriously pay twenty bucks for that cape.
