Confession of a power gaming junkie
I played EVE Online and market a lot there and asked myself the question of why more people don't do marketing in these games.
It has voice channels in game, so I would just ask people why they did not market since it is the best way to make money and you end up being the richest people in the game. The answer was quite simply some people HATE math/numbers and find it boring dealing with spreadsheets etc... In the end some just don't find it fun no matter how much profit you show them they could make to buy that pimped out part they wanted. |

I'm lazy, I only have 300 or so crap purples.
Infinity and Victory mostly
dUmb, etc.
lolz PvP anymore, Market PvP for fun and profit
I have a good bit of money already (in the neighborhood of 20 billion), but if there's that much profit to be had, I suppose I can be coaxed out of my ennui.
@Demobot
Also on Steam
I already did this. In spades and I spent no more than 1 million per recipie. Purple and pvpios too. I bought hundreds.
I too do not know what i am going to do with all these ios except super pimp even my lesser used toons and sell the rest.
What really confuses me is why almost no one else is doing what I'm doing. The profit potential is HUGE!!! I may become a trillionaire. I have seen other bids here and there. For a while I was in a bidding war with someone bidding X,090,000 or something like that, but then those stopped. According to Arcanna I pushed her out of the market because I drove up prices too high. Too high?

I actually did the same thing:
http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showp...55&postcount=5
I haven't gotten anywhere near the 1,000 that TopDoc is shooting for but I mananged to get just over 200 purples that first day and have since probably picked up another 100 or so.
I'm good with that amount. Between the ones I already have stored and those that will need to be converted I think I'm good on purples for the for seeable future.
Honestly, I think the profit potential you are seeing may not be as great as you think though. I would imagine that just as converters drop the price of PvP IOs they will do the same for Purples.
I think the new "expensive" IOs will be the ATOs just because they are new and everyone is going to want the new thing.
I actually bought a bunch of accounts when they were 1 dollar and just let them go f2p after that first month so I will have them buy superpacks and trade me all their ATOs, for me to use or sell. It seemed like a pretty good deal .
I'm way too lazy to do any of this but I do appreciate the efforts of those who are. You will be making the purples I buy more affordable. Thank you all.
last i saw and tried on test as of 3 or 4 days ago ATIO's are not marketable but tradeable in account.
My postings to this forum are not to be used as data in any research study without my express written consent.
Anyone done anything crazy like respec out of IOs and sell them at the high price that they are now just to buy it a lower price later? What price do you think purples will settle on? Im thinking you will see almost all of them < 250 mill.
Im rich because you trust the previous 5 bids!!
My market signature is the highest bid!!!!
It could be that the ability to make 'worthless' PvP and Purple IOs 'worthy' ones will drive down prices... at first. If the PvP/Purple market gets low enough, people who have stayed away from them might become interested... driving the prices back up.

My last market victory was catching wind of the Enzyme / Membrane nerf very early in the day that word got out. I thankfully had COH on my laptop at work, and so I was able to log on and strip/dump off my toons before the prices fell to current levels. I even put in a few stopgap low-bid buys that turned out OK. And I nabbed a few Cytos before their prices went insane.
Other than that, I don't have the time to put in to do what TD always does. When he mentioned leveling up 10 pvp toons to sit in the radius of Spin and be harvested for PVP IOs, I was like, damn, that's an awesome idea. But I haven't got the time to do it. I have to choose between spending, maybe, 1-2 hours every day or two playing the game for fun -- doing TFs, iTrials, etc. -- or marketing/marketeering. For me, I prefer spending those 1-2 hours seeing if a toon can handle an ITF or take down a pylon in under 3 mins.
The level of marketing that goes on here, that TD and others show, is something I completely respect, but can't bring myself to do in the game time I have alotted. I am, however, slightly bummed that the Enhance Converter low-value-purple-binging destroyed my ongoing niche of flipping Absolute Amazements Whoever you were letting me buy at 66M and flip for 120M, I thank you for some good times.
Don't forget,
Reward Merits(10) for 1 converter token. When I heard this, I also stocked up. I stocked up on pvp/purple recipes, *-Merits. I have around 2000astral and 159 Emp Merits, and 5200 reward merits on my main toon. I have some level level pvp enhancments for use, and L50 into high priced ones to capitalize on the billion(s) of INF stockpiled on them. But I've saw 2 gladiator armor's sell for 1.9bill. So those thousands of bids on Gladiators armor isnt 2bill.
Astral Merit(3) for 1 Converter Token.
Empyrean Merit(1) for 5 Converter Tokens.
Killing enemies pvp/pve as drops.
Reward Merits(10) for 1 converter token.
Astral Merit(3) for 1 Converter Token. Empyrean Merit(1) for 5 Converter Tokens. Killing enemies pvp/pve as drops. |
So, if i'm readin this right, it takes 10 merits to buy one converter.
Thus, an apex/tin mage duo earns you 8 of them, or 26 every three days per toon.
It costs three convertors to roll in-set, right? And one to roll any-any?
So if ya stock up on junk purps and roll any-any, you can make 8 rolls a day plus two extra's.
I go here and look up stuffs:
http://paragonwiki.com/wiki/Very_Rare_IO_Sets
There's ten VR sets with 6 IO's in each. Of those 60, there's 20 that are most valuable, namely, all the duo's and up on the damage sets. Thus, an any-any roll has about a 33 percent chance of a good payout with VR's, or, a 67 percent chance of converting crap to crap.
Assuming those numbers are sort of right, and that demand doesn't increase too much, I can see purples 'smoothing out' to right around 300 million apiece, regardless of what it is.
It's a decent payout even at 300million, but I'm not sure how much demand there is. It's quite possible that oversupply will come into play.
We'll hafta see.
Your Epeen is biggest you win
What really confuses me is why almost no one else is doing what I'm doing.

In general though, I'm pretty lazy when it comes to the market, simply because I don't enjoy doing it that much. It's a means to an end for me. I like being able to put a 500 million or so towards every alt I play in set IOs and I like purpling my favorite 50s. Playing the market is the easiest way to do that, and it's why I've got 10 or 15 billion sitting around. But I don't need any more than that really. I know how to make more when I need it. And I'd rather play the game than the markets.
Well, I've been away for several months, so I didn't know anything about this until right now. Now I'm off to buy cheap purples.

Like most, I can make inf easily when I need it, over a fairly short amount of time. I've never really had the urge or need to stockpile inf. I've got a lot merits that I could roll or cash in, but really, they're easier to carry around than shuffling inf through market storage, email, etc.

Thank you Devs & Community people for a great game.

As to the OP, I saw this scenario coming as soon as the announcements were made. I haven't bought a single cheap purple though, and the only reason I can give is pure apathy. I'm already sitting on a pile of inf, and my current alt projects have been stalled for a while so I have no reason to spend. I haven't even been playing much over the last month or so. Maybe I'll regret not jumping on those cheap purples, but that's looking doubtful at the moment.
Goodbye and thanks for all the fish.
I've moved on to Diablo 3, TopDoc-1304
Meh. Inf rains from the sky in paragon. I only bother finding a bucket to hold it when I want it.

This isn't just rain. This is a flood of biblical proportions! This is "get purples and PvPs for every character you have now, and every character you will ever create".

I understand the mechanics of using the market to make money...however I find the effort of actually *doing it* to have approximately the same fun-factor as making music by dragging my nails across a chalkboard. I get the same results (IO's on characters) - it just takes longer, but I get to have more fun in the process. Your mileage can and obviously will vary
@Mistress Rue
Yes, I RP and play Redside on Virtue - No, Rumors of its demise have been greatly exaggerated
Do you suck at COH/COV? not yet...
*wonders why I asked that*
