Yeah it was crummy to have to wait for new episodes but it gave me a chance to catch up with the comics. I finished reading the first compendium like a month ago and I'm really looking forward to seeing how they'll manage to "translate" the upcoming story to the TV medium. Some of it is so nasty I just don't see how they'll manage it for a basic cable show. I suspect the "comic purists" out there are going to be more disappointed as the TV story continues to diverge from the comics. Either way it should be interesting.

Some interesting rumors regarding Darabont's new show and the cast going around.

I93 came out recently. Comic is taking some interesting turns post I90.

There's other teasers/trailers so forth floating around. AMC used to have a few, but I haven't seen them lately.

Bummed that A&E snuffed the live talk show after, it was kinda fun. They replaced it with a reality show set in Kevin Smith's comic book shop.

I thought they were airing that instead of Hell on Wheels.

Either way, I'm disappointed it won't be back.

More AMC cuts I guess?

There was an article a few days ago that finally confirmed that Darabont left/fired over money issues. His vision sounded interested, but wholly impractical for cable television.

I was surprised to hear they are operating on half the budget of season 1 though.

That's cool. I knew they were getting relatively close to I96 of the comic so I figured I'd just catch up in a few months when the second compendium (presumably issues 49-96) comes out. There's no way the TV show will get past the story presented by the first compendium any time soon anyway so I can wait. IIRC, the TV show has only gotten up to maybe around I20 of the comic give or take.

Probably explains things like why they spent so much time at Hershel's farm. Easier to film in one set location.

Others, who read the comic (I haven't), said that it departed from the comics long ago in terms of story.

Yes and no.

It's still the basic story as the comic (A never ending zombie movie), but there are some major departures in terms of character development, introduction and so on.

Season 3 was announced to have sixteen episodes over the break, so I guess we'll have another eight and eight season and mid-season next year.

Yeah, I just finished Vol. 6 of the hardbacks, so I'm up to issue 72. I have volume 7, but I've been trying to pace myself so that I won't have to wait too long for volume 8. Not that it has worked - I open one of those hardbacks and end up reading all 12 issues over the course of 2-3 days.

Sounds like I'll have to wait 4 or 5 months at least for Volume 8, so I'll probably start buying the comics monthly with issue 97.

DON'T EVEN JOKE LIKE THAT!!! No series deserves that fate.....being, literally, the best show on TV....down to a joke that needed shot in the head....but you always HOPED it'd get better....so you watched the train wreck anyway.

PS: Walking Dead is literally the only NEW show I've picked up in the last few years that I salvate to watch the next episode of......last time it was season 1 Heroes.....

There is another interesting thing I picked up over the holidays. It's the Walking Dead Season 1 episode guide.

The television show stuff is utter fluff (pictures, mini-interviews, and the like), but half the book is dedicated to the creation of the comic.

Which is pretty interesting. There's Kirkman's original pitch included. One of the highlights (for me at least) was the section about trying to sell the comic to publishers. Since zombies hadn't come back (no pun intended), absolutely no one was interested in publishing it. Kirkman modified his original pitch to include the plot line that aliens from outer space were causing the dead to rise in an attempt to overthrow governments. He goes on to say that he never intended to actually follow through with this plot, but it worked because Image picked up the series.

He had to later admit that the alien plot line was a farce when the editors at Image asked, three issues in, why there was no references to the alien overlords.

Fast forward about a decade later, the books are regularly in three or four spots in the New York Times best sellers list (both hardcover and paperback). And he's one of the owners of Image comics to boot!

I can't wait I really hate this midseason hiatuses that these shows are doing. Now that the little girl is dead, makes me wonder if they are gonna kill off the mother now too, most likely.

I think they're slowly using Carol to build up Daryll's character traits more.

I see her hanging around through Season 2, till we've established him in a real leadership position among the survivors.

Yeah they might kill Carol off eventually, but they'll probably keep her around for at least a few more episodes. Now that Sophia's dead she'll be good fodder for becoming the "tragically unhinged mother" prime for going some kind of insane that they'll have to deal with. Good drama could be harvested from that.

*** COMIC BOOK SPOILER ALERT ***

Carol basically went crazy and killed herself in the comic book by letting herself get bit by a zombie even while Sophia was still alive. Since Daryl did not exist in the comic book we'll have to see how the relationship with him will change how they handle Carol in the TV show.

With TV Carol being exposed to far worse than Comic Carol (Relatively recent spousal abuse, watching spouse being devoured, Sophia incident vs. Implied abusive spouse's suicide, infidelity, and rejection by social support), I'd say that her demise will be most enjoyable.

I see it playing out similar to her comic end. She'll attempt to begin a personal (not necessarily sexual) relationship with Daryll. Due to his nature, he'll reject her and she'll spiral into madness that ends with her demise.

I'm also expecting T-Dog to be done by the end of the season.

The fate of TV Carol could actually be almost identical to the comic if they eventually introduce a character on the TV show that's like the comic book's Michonne. I could see where Daryl and Carol get close for the next few episodes then all of a sudden the new Michonne-like character shows up and drives the unstable Carol over the edge.

One week left folks.

For fans of the comics, Kirkman has been posting teaser art for the next arc "Something to Fear" (starts with issue 97).

I'll avoid detailing the specific content of each of the art...but speculation is running rampant that a certain pair of brothers will be making their comic debut.
