Watching every superhero/comic movie ever made

I know it's a little early but I was thinking about a project I wanted to do as a sort of new year's resolution. I'd like to watch and review every superhero/comic book movie ever made. This is a big project so I'd like some help and I thought what better place to ask for help than here. I've been thinking about this for a while, and was inspired to post after seeing the list of 80's movies that Frietag has never seen. On the flipside, I've probably seen most superhero movies out there.

First, I'd like to mention that this is really in the early stages of planning for me. I'd like to have everything figured out by the new year. I'd appreciate ideas on any parts of the concept. Is it something other people would actually be interested in? Should I do it via a blog like Wordpress.com or something similar? Should I do it as more of a video review series on YouTube? (note: this would require me getting a webcam, and I'm not up for the task of editing together a professional looking video with movie clips like the Nostalgia Critic and others, it would just be me talking to the camera, and my 5 year old daughter as well for the age-appropriate movies)

And of course the second part would be a list of movies. I'm open to anything at the moment. But I would prefer to at least start with typical superhero-comic book movies, and comic book style movies like Sin City and 300. Also, I'd prefer to limit it to American theatrically released movies, not TV movies or straight-to-DVD movies. I might change my mind on those though, depends how big the list ends up getting.

To do list:

Get a list of movies: done
Narrow down the list of movies to around 100: done
Make the list of movies into a schedule

Decide what format to do the reviews: leaning towards text, maybe text and podcast?
Decide where to host the reviews: done
Pick a name for the project: done - Flights, Tights, and Movie Nights

Wanted is a comic movie...

Please don't watch Fantastic Four (1994). Just...don't.

I liked it. But it is definitely super-cheesy and not entirely finished.

Also, despite decrying TV movies and such, I recommend the two Trickster 'movies' on DVD from the Flash series. I'd say they're better than some of the actual movies on the list. But, then, so are many of the straight-to-DVD DC animated features.

I suggest starting with a very narrow focus, like "Movies featuring licensed versions of Marvel and DC Super Heroes", otherwise you will get into endless debates about movies you 'missed' because they were 'in the superhero style'.

For instance, movies like 'Push' and 'Nightbreed' might be debatable.

You might also go as far as to define 'superhero'.

For instance, does Ash from Army of Darkness or James Bond qualify?

I'd like you to review the movies as far as talk about what you liked and disliked about it both as a piece of cinema and a representation of a superhero.

Story Arcs I created:

Every Rose: (#17702) Villainous vs Legacy Chain. Forget Arachnos, join the CoT!

Cosplay Madness!: (#3643) Neutral vs Custom Foes. Heroes at a pop culture convention!

Kiss Hello Goodbye: (#156389) Heroic vs Custom Foes. Film Noir/Hardboiled detective adventure!

I've thought about doing something similar to this. But with the strict adherence to movies that were based on actual comic books. I might expand to manga, but I thought that might get too unwieldly especially when dealing with animated features.

But I wanted to take it a step further, and make video reviews critiquing the films, via persona called the Masked Movie Man. Considering that I don't have any background in actual film so as to have some education into what went into the production of the films, really I'd only be reviewing them as a regular movie watcher so while my tastes for whats in a film might still be the same, I'd be able to mention some of the behind the seens stuff that was done either wrong or right as well.

Also, to consider adding to your list:

The Crow (1994)
The Crow City of Angels (1996)

There are other Crow films but they were direct to dvd release.

I don't think anybody has listed the 1978 Dr. Strange film. It was funkadelic!

However, it turned out that Smith was not a time-travelling Terminator

Good points all. I haven't counted the list yet, but I think I want to get the list to around 100 movies. That would be about two movies a week for a year. Also, any thoughts on print vs. video?

Harsh. Ghost Rider may not be great but I would list Catwoman as the worst on that list. Yes, even worst that Zoom or My Super Ex-Girlfriend! Maybe you were lucky enough never to have been exposed to that? Mind you I have not seen BarbedWire, that must be a contender?

To the OP: If you are going to do this I would recommend watching Catwoman and immediately follow it up with The Incredibles because that will restore your faith in humanity.

This is a song about a super hero named Tony. Its called Tony's theme.

Actually one of them, Crow: Stairway to Heaven, is pretty much a cut down, cut rate, heavily editted version of the first film as it was a pilot for the Crow series. So there's no reason to watch that one.

Badge Earned: Wing Clipper

A real showstopper!

I watch Catwoman for the same reason that I'll watch Ultraviolet, and it ain't because it's a good movie...

I think I added all the suggestions so far to the list on the second post and numbered them. Now I'd like to hear what I should start cutting out of the list. I'd rather not cut out a lot of the ones I own as they will be very easy to watch. There's a lot on Hero of Steel's list I'd never heard of before. I plan on coming back later on and mark the movies I think are more iffy like the Indiana Jones series and Tarzan and Zorro. It might also be good to have more variety than several very similar movies. It might be a good idea to only watch one movie from sequalized franchises like Superman and the X-men. Still lots to think about.

This could become a very big project if you start including movies like "Ghost World" or "American Splendor".

Ghost World featured a set of amazing talents with Thora Birch and Scarlett Johansson. By "talents" I mean breasts.

Bubba, I'd say that if its your intent to review superhero comic book movies, you make a priority list.

Start off with something like this:

Tier 1: Live-Action Films made after the comic (North Western American)
This would remove such films as Indiana Jones.
Zorro was first novelized. It had film, and a comic that was around the same time if I'm not too mistaken. So, if you want, you may have to decide if strict adherance to the historical timeline is necessary. For example, Zorro films prior to the comic aren't reviewed, while those after are. Then again, it may be even more necessary to research the comics and films to see if any films made after the publication of a comic used a story based on that comic, which does meet the criteria.

Tier 2: Live-Action Films of superhero theme not based on a previously published comic.

Tier 3: Animated Films based on a comic.

Tier 3: Animated Films not based on a previously published comic.

Tier 4: Live action films based on a Manga.

Tier 5: Animated Films based on a Manga.

Tier 6: Films that spawned the creation of a comic.
This would end up including such things as Indiana Jones, Star Wars, Serenity (Firefly), etc...

This would end up encompassing everything that spans films and comic cross overs, giving them a priority. This way, say you've completed Tier 1 and have moved onto Tier 2, but another film that belongs in Teir 1 comes out. You can then review it and go back to Teir 2.
