For Sale: Exalted (VIP) Server Names (Including HERO!)
I am not certain these two statements go together real well:
He asked me to get these names for him because he wanted to try out the server, and didn't end up playing there. I see nothing wrong with him exchanging something he acquired for influence.
|
I find this very sad... :/ why buy a name? What's the point when you can easily be creative and make your own names.
Hmmmm let's have some fun.
Hero - name of a Comic book and Comicbook company. Partner with Wizard magazine and Marvel. Kim - Main Character of the Kim Jonk Il comicbook (yes there is one) Annie - Main character of comic strip Little Orphan Annie. Also name of movie and play based on same comic. Lucy - Famous Cartoon character from Peanuts comic. So great Devs of COX here's a chance to generic 4 names. Don't think generic 235 6789 345 will go for millions. |
Hero: "City of Heroes" ; good luck.
Kim: Typical female name.
Annie: Typical female name.
Lucy: Typical female name.
Excel: ex·cel/ikˈsel/Verb: Be exceptionally good at or proficient in an activity or subject.
People can make arguments that this is wrong, "not a service to the community", etc; but from what I've seen so far I've made one person extremely happy. Someone who was willing to pay practically anything for Hero, as they wanted it. The fact they obtained it was thrilling to them and thus, I am more comfortable than ever selling names. I've decided to make a habit of it, I am now going to login to the city and attempt to claim every name I can get my hands on.

By the way, dictionary definitions aside, Excel is petitionable.
'I don't like the look of it at all,' said the King: 'however, it may kiss my hand if it likes.'
'I'd rather not,' the Cat remarked.
'Don't be impertinent,' said the King, 'and don't look at me like that!' He got behind Alice as he spoke.

We care. Some people objected to the selling itself. Some objected to the sanctimony of the 'community service' claim. Up until his last post, it was all pretty much supposition and opinion based on limited information. With his last post, by his own words, his character has now been established.

I don't feel bad charging people on the market for items they want. Someone was glad to pay him influence for something he was selling in game. People talked about "griefing," and then went on to nitpick little ways that having these names in the first place was "against the rules." Talk about being petty.
You're complaining that he didn't just give them away. Sure, I guess that would be "nicer," but the bottom line is that he still offered to exchange in game items that people obviously wanted, making them available to the community.
Influence is an abundant, renewable resource. He wasn't taking names from other players maliciously at any point. I'm sorry to say it, but you guys are just whining at this point.
Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should.
I do not think that pointing that out is whining.
Dear OP if you truly are a member of the COX community then you should be familiar with the long standing tradition of the thread for each server where people put up names they have let go so others may use them. Although no hard rule exist, for nearly as long as this game has been around its been seen as good form to let go of that which you no longer wish to be known as.
Your tone at first seemed to paint you as one who cared about the game and its players, but over the course of several posts has not done well for your own image, and players are right to speak of requesting a ban against you here on these forums as your goals seem to be quite contrary to the nature of COX's community which even recently on a popular web series that looks at older MMOs going FTP, gained this game very high praise with such comments as a friendly, helpful, and SELFLESS community not hung up on the owning one upmanship so common in other MMOs.
If behavior like yours is allowed to become widespread then soon the long and beloved community attitude of putting up names they have lost interest in for others to pick up will dry up as thieves steal them to resale.
To That End I must ask my fellow heroic and villainous forumites to stand with me and start a /signed against using the forums to post SALES of character names. We have a long established tradition that fills this need and now its endanger of being exploited by those lacking in good gamemanship(sportsmanship for gamers) ethics. Please DEVs be our heroes now when we need you!
I'm not sure what's going on in this thread, but I'll throw out a bid of 2 goats and 3 chickens for the name Bob. Because as we all know... Bob is the most heroic name of all!

Sitting on names with the intent of selling them to the highest bidder sounds suspiciously like cybersquatting. Then on top of that, how is trying to advertise these sales on the forums any different than the "gold sellers" in game. I know... I know, someone will say the OP isn't asking for real cash. But isn't that just the next step? If selling names for inf on the forums becomes acceptable, it's just opening the door for someone to come along looking for cash transactions.

There have been posts from you and your 'friend' which contradict the way you got these names in the 1st place:
-Friend reserved these names for you.
-Friend sold them to you
-You just got lucky
I still think your last post is to try and save your own behind from any actions taken from Mods, GM and maybe even Devs.

while I don't think id make a thread for it i've traded names before that i've had sat aside , i've renamed a level 50 because someone out of the blue offered me enough inf to choke a horse for the name , i've offered names as prizes for costume contests and sometimes I just post em up to whomever wants them on the virtue name watch thread and the exalted thread .
im not really bothered by someone advertizing and attempting to profit from a name they have , your milage may vary of course .
No such threads exist on Freedom or Pinnacle, the only server forums I visit with any frequency. I'd never heard of such a thing before this thread.
