For Sale: Exalted (VIP) Server Names (Including HERO!)
It occurs to me in reading this thread, that one of the major worries we all had in CoX going F2P was all the free players trolling us...while some of that has indeed happened (thank you Help channel!), it's threads like this that give us all a heartwarming reminder that paying customers can be trolls too.

@Mistress Rue
Yes, I RP and play Redside on Virtue - No, Rumors of its demise have been greatly exaggerated
Do you suck at COH/COV? not yet...
Aye. Decided I'd see what these might fetch me:
Hero: That's right, Hero. This one I won't let go cheap. Kim: *shrug* Annie: *shrug* Lucy: *shrug* Excel: *shrug* Looking to see what these might go for, mostly Hero. |
(I got Gatekeeper on "U! No Allow Here!" server, that's all I care about.
Now, if you've got Gatekeeper on Infinity, maybe we can talk.....)

K, the OP has been playing this game for a long time. He isn't trolling anyone- He's a real life friend of mine, and I actually reserved all of these names for him. I don't think selling names in a video game is any different than selling anything else (ie: enhancements, recipes) for INFLUENCE. You are trading fictitious items for fictitious money. How is there anything wrong with this thread?

There's not. Just these type of threads always create a flame war. Should see WoW when someone gives up a name but sells it for real money on E-bay. Omgawd. It's ridunkulus.

To edit and clarify: These weren't names he stole from other people to grief them. Most of them were names he already had on different servers, he just wanted to move his characters over to Exalted to try it out and wanted the names reserved.
If anything, he's doing a courtesy to the community by making them available. He definitely doesn't need the influence but it is convenient for new alts. He could have sat on some (in my opinion) very good names for all eternity.
I agree with you that RMT for in game items is totally silly and stupid, but I can assure you that he didn't have any more bad intentions by starting this thread than anyone else who sells sought after in game items on the market board. He didn't even post an asking price for anything.
Well Anni isn't selling anything for real money. He asked me to get these names for him because he wanted to try out the server, and didn't end up playing there. I see nothing wrong with him exchanging something he acquired for influence.

It's not a courtesy to hold onto names you don't intend on using, it's a self serving looking out for yourself kind of selfishness. Which is fine, but don't polish a turd by calling it a favour for thecommunity to do so.
True courtesy would be just releasing the names, and maybe putting them in the Exalted, name watch thread. There's a lot of people who have name camped to trade names (look at post #20 in that thread!) there, and to look for names, so OP might have more luck in that thread.
The long and short of it is this -
if you think/feel that the idea of trading in-game loot for a name is ...a less than savory idea, then you should of course, not make a deal to do so.
Personally, I think Anni is ok. A solid player, albeit one who "looks out for number 1". However, he is fair in his dealings, at least he has been with me.
But, me, I have an imagination, I can always come up with a different name.

@Ukase
It's really a big stretch to say he is doing a 'courtesy to the community' by selling the names. He is trying to profit by having those names.

Hi guys, surprised by the attention this thread has caught.
First off, Hero is now sold. The rest of the names aside from Lucy remain available (I am keeping this name I've decided for one of my toons on VIP)
I apologize to the users who believe "hoarding" names is wrong but, this is to each their own and I have broken no rules or caused any griefing in doing so- besides, it's not as if I'm sitting on an account full of legendary super heroic / villainous names as said.
The way I see it, these are names I wanted specificly and the fact I got them is just luck.
Value is in the eye of the beholder, most of these aren't that special to anyone and in no way was their any issues reported in me obtaining these names.
With all that said, the rest of the names are still available.

I suspect that selling names falls under "things the Devs would not have approved of had they foreseen them".
'I don't like the look of it at all,' said the King: 'however, it may kiss my hand if it likes.'
'I'd rather not,' the Cat remarked.
'Don't be impertinent,' said the King, 'and don't look at me like that!' He got behind Alice as he spoke.
'A cat may look at a king,' said Alice.
I agree, Aneko. I got lucky with a cool name on Exalted and I'm Keeping it!
I sincerely doubt that the Devs anticipated anyone camping names, let alone 'selling' them. I doubt they would or do approve - I know I don't.
Be Well!

I fail to see the difference between selling a name you no longer use for Infamy, or respecing a character who you no longer play out of some enhancements and selling them for infamy... But I don't see anyone complaining about the market and calling THAT selfish.

So you think you're a hero, huh.
@Boltcutter in game.
ersonally, I don't care. I do agree, though, that referring to it as a 'service to the community' is a crock.

I guess I just view it the same way that I view farming. Sure, people are profiting off of the recipe drops they get and/or ticket rolls they make, but they are also helping out the community by making items available that folks would like to purchase.

Again, as I stated, I don't have a problem with the behavior. My only problem is with characterizing it as a 'community service'.

I would disagree. I understand that some people would (and perhaps rightfully so) upset if these were peoples "global name" as those are unique to each of us, but I think these names are pretty generic names.
People "sell" (really its more trading) a lot of items/services:
I have seen more than one person sell a sg base - which if it was built from the prestige of mulitple players would be a lot 'dirtier' than selling a name.
I've seen people selling "pvp builds"- pretty funny considering you can ask just about any decent pvper and they will share them with you for free.
I have in the past traded with people to build a base, artwork, costume codes, booster packs, even crafting recipes for me.
Asking or telling the OP that he should just give the names way if he isn't going to use it would be the same (in my mind) as telling anyone who is saving hami os or purples or even inf that they should just toss it to a random player.
Is it shady to sell names...maybe if you view that person as a claim jumper. Is it a service...maybe if you view that person as offering this name as a product of their imagination and creativity.
And I call BS on that interpretation. When you get drops from farming, they are created out of nothingness. It's something that did not exist before. When you grab a name, you're taking an existing and limited resource. If you farm and get a purple, it doesn't stop anyone else from getting purples. When you camp a name, no one else can have it.

The bottom line is that he is providing in game things to people that they might be willing to pay Inf for. If you don't like it, go read a different thread.

It is no more or less acceptable than selling something on the market. But to characterize it as a community service is pathetic.

The bottom line is that he has something of perceived value and is selling it. No more, no less. I don't see it as shady or sleazy and I definitely don't see it as a community service.

Hero - name of a Comic book and Comicbook company. Partner with Wizard magazine and Marvel.
Kim - Main Character of the Kim Jonk Il comicbook (yes there is one)
Annie - Main character of comic strip Little Orphan Annie. Also name of movie and play based on same comic.
Lucy - Famous Cartoon character from Peanuts comic.
So great Devs of COX here's a chance to generic 4 names.
Don't think generic 235 6789 345 will go for millions.

Yeah, I had someone send me a tell a week or two after Exalted went live asking if I'd give up one of the names I had. But it was one of the best names I was able to pick up, so I declined. I made sure to go play that character after though, so I wouldn't feel like I was just name-camping.
I have 4-5 characters on Exalted that I play occasionally.
