Is "Gratz" dead?
Goodbye may seem forever
Farewell is like the end
But in my heart's the memory
And there you'll always be
-- The Fox and the Hound
I rarely ever say "gratz" - and if I do, it was a typo. I may say "grats" occasionally, but the most common is "congo rats". Since I don't actually create a bind to do it because I like varying it, I don't do it in some in-game situations and I certainly don't do it when I don't notice someone level.
it has gone from unconscionable to downright appalling that we have no way of measuring our characters' wetness.

I don't say gratz for something as mundane as levelling, although I'll thank people who do so to me out of politeness.
Gratz was dead, but now you've brought it back as a shambling undead monstrosity! It roams the servers eating brains! Politely, of course.

Same... Maybe it makes me terribly rude, but I've just never seen leveling as that big a deal. We all do it eventually, so I don't feel like it's something that requires special recognition.

I don't say grats for anything other than a lvl 50 ding or if a friend says they reached x level and got x super important power, like a kin hitting lvl 38. But then again I pretty much never play at levels lower than lvl 50 either, the only time I do is when I'm going for TFC, in which case ~half the team is lvl 50 anyways.
I do it when the team I'm on is doing it. Go with the flow et all that.

Everyone in my SG and myself all have 'gratz' binds. Not only for ease of use, but as a way of helping define characters, as part of the fun.
We don't roleplay or anything like that, but we do have a series of binds we all set up for our characters as part of defining them. There's a Hello, a Gratz, a There's an enemy $target up ahead, there's a blinky here, etc, for general use and whatever else for little personalizations. Eatch one is as different as the characters. We do it for fun, and for convenience.
Some of our villain characters don't have very nice Gratz binds, but they still have them
"I play characters. I have to have a very strong visual appearance, backstory, name, etc. to get involved with a character, otherwise I simply won't play it very long. I'm not an RPer by any stretch of the imagination, but character concept is very important for me."- Back Alley Brawler
I couldn't agree more.
I stopped saying "grats" because it's waaay too easy to level now. My "grats" threshold is 40+, when I feel someone really deserves a congrats for making it that far.

I've honestly toned down how much I say grats mostly due to the return to battle power. That thing looks like someone leveled if you don't pay to much attention to it. I still smile to this day when I see someone says grats because it reminds me of those creatures I farmed repeatedly in FFVIII.

I still say "congratulations," "way to go!," "well done!," and so forth...I'm probably over-thinking things, but I find the shorthand 'gratz!' or 'cg' come off a bit less meaningful. If I'm taking time to write it, might as well say it well.
...And the plus side is, a couple of times of "Well done, blasterboy!" and "Congratulations, Ms. Brute!" along with any pleasantries like appreciation for good holds, debuffs, assistance or the like, and I notice the rest of the team tends to become more polite too. Good manners are infectious! (At least around the folks I run with.) Is it silly game manners? Maybe, but recognizing somebody else for doing well is always a good plan, it makes them feel better, and if the players on a team feel better, it's easier to have fun alongside 'em.
The Death from Below trial is the only place I won't normally grats, they just come too often there. Otherwise unless I miss it in a fight I try to grats regularly. Just a small cheer for a player, not hard to do and makes folks smile.
Well, an automatic grats has about as much sincerity behind it as a forced apology.
There's various reasons you don't see it as much, I think. One, with the pace of battle you don't always see or hear people ding up, or if you do you might be busy with other things. Two, the XP curve is sufficiently smoothed out that folks get a lot of levels really quickly. I know in sewer teams it's not even worth saying grats, because everyone's leveling every two minutes. I still see it, especially in the higher levels when leveling becomes rarer. But it's definitely an occasional thing, not constant. |
And of course the .. sorry I didnt hear you ding is always and has always been an issue. I was on one team and the noise during a battle was so loud I leveled and even heard the ding but it was so faint over the noise I didnt realize it was me and typed in G R A T Z wanting to ackowledge the accomlishment of my team mate .. LOL when that battle ended I realized I had leveled and had just congratulated myself.

I usually say it as well, when I see it that is. But i usually run the team interface so all the buffs are visiable. So all those inspiration icons get noticed.

But you should TOTALLY understand that 'gratz!' from me really equals about a page and a half essay of how totally freakin' awesome it was you went from a 14 to a 15. Srsly.

QR: I only wish gratz was dead. Its particularly funny when people are continually gratzed while being PLed in a farm. Congratulations?! If anyone is congratulated it ought to be the person running the farm!
What noble achievement does this denote? Meh. Gratz is good for level 50, if you ask me. Which you didn't, but just saying.
I still grats folks when I see the level buff in the power bar, but with all the animations going off on screen it's easy to miss the actual level animation. However, when I level or when I actually see a person level I will acknowledge it with a "Shazaam!" in team chat. I also have a soundbit ripped from a certain other MMOs cinematic trailer which I will play over a voicechat when one of my SG mates or I level. Good times!

If "grats" was dead then all that would mean is that the completely anti-social teams I've been on over the years where people say nothing but "grats" and "g2g, thx 4 team" would be completely silent. I don't think I'd care about that.
The friendly and social teams I've been a part of would still have been pretty great though, I mean, it's not like the one defining feature of those teams is that we habitually threw out congratulations for managing to ding.
Grats is applicable in a few situations:
1) an npc sees you level and says "grats!" for humorous effect. hard to program.
2) you've hit a landmark level, like 10, 20, 22, basically one of those levels where something cool happens you've been waiting for.
3) you leveling is something fun and exciting to break the ice and start conversation.
4) it's been a while since you leveled, and you're a step closer to something cool.
5) you just got something really awesome, like the flames of prometheus. swirly light be damned, that's frickin gratsworthy.
6) you're hanging out with friends and you really just want to say grats for something.
note that at no point in this list is the grats mandatory. because that's sinful. never force gratitude.
