Annoying Maintenance Times
The production servers are down for maintenance for 6 hours which is annoying. Are other online games down for maintenance for such long periods of time? Also, the US being the bulk of game players why don't they do the maintenance like around 3 am Eastern time or something. Thanks

2) Doing it at 3 am eastern puts it at midnight PST, when a decent amount of people might still be playing there. It also means that you have to pay a lot of people overtime and ask them to come in very early and stay for an indeterminate amount of time, instead of just asking them to show up an hour or two before they normally would.

I'm on my day off, and I'm not nearly as remotely bothered by this as the OP appears to be. I usually take this time to read a book or watch some Brisco County Jr. or run errands.
Edit: Or post on the forums.

A game I purchased recently, which has been out since much earlier this year, had an account issue that made all new players' accounts unusable. This bug persisted for well over a week with zero developer commentary on it.
Another game that recently went free-to-play has queues on their two servers every night. While that in itself is not a bad thing, the queues last for several hours. Heaven forbid you disconnect for any reason.
Another game that's been out for.... well, longer than CoH, used to regularly have unplanned outages. When I say 'regularly', some of the playerbase began to suspect that they were actually planned outages for maintenance that they didn't want to let us know about. It was somewhat suspicious that they happened at regular times during the week, and not at peak hours either. These outages would last between 2-4 hours. 2-3 times a week.
To put it bluntly - if you're going to play a massively multiplayer online game you really have to expect downtime for maintenance on a regular basis. The team at Paragon Studios has been pretty good about giving us advance warning about this as well as fixing problems as soon as they can.

......! I forgot that's on DVD! *appends Christmas List*
I'm irritated by it a little bit as I had just hit level 48 on one of my characters, and I need to log in so I can put new enhancements in.
Maintenance downtimes aren't nearly as annoying as the threads they create here.
"Oh gee, the servers are down. What am I going to do now? I know, I'll use the time to complain on the forums!"
Too many 50's to list here's a few you may know.

Hahahaha. Unless there are some crazy local laws involved, no one who would be doing this kind of work would get a penny of overtime.

Back in the bad old days, even entry level help desk analysts making less than $25k/year were considered exempt. The word from above in those days was that "you work in IT and if you aren't working 50+ hours, you aren't cut out to be in IT". Technically, exempt employees are supposed to get comp time for working wacky overtime, but that never really happened in my experience.

6 hours really? I though they said 2 hours
Most weeks it's 2 hours. Patches are often longer. 6 hours is normal for a major content publish, which this is.
Just another point about maintenance effecting EU playing time, the suggestion by the OP about a 3am start time would still screw the EU players as it would mean the servers would go offline at about 8pm and be down for the rest of the night. Think I have got that right taking into account the time difference please correct me if I am wrong.

Well, if they're salaried, then no, probably not. But if they're hourly, then yeah. also, I know that if I asked my salaried people to come in at 12 am and stay until 6 am, they'd be pushing for some extra compensation, and I don't think Dunkin Donuts would be enough.

The Big MMO has maintenance every Tuesday morning, usually starting from 4am PST to 11am PST.
Extended Maintenance days, which usually indicates a patch, or they're adding a new server, hardware issues, etc., maintenance may start around 2am PST instead.
Other Tuesdays, maintenance may be rolling server restarts, which last anywhere from 5 to 20 mins usually.
And then, there are those wonderful Tuesdays when maintenance is not needed and we get uninterrupted service.
Of course, this inconveniences Aussie and NZ players during prime time, but according to the data-mining, Tuesday at those hours is the time when fewest players are online. EU servers have their own maintenance hours.
Someone will always be inconvenienced, somewhere in the world.
