Wouldn't that just be the Fat Man from Fallout 3?

My two choices would be a rifle & a machete.

Now that we’ve covered weapons; It’s the start of the zombie outbreak (you’re not in a secure area) & you only have 20 minutes to stuff gear into a backpack, what do you grab?

If any of these items are nearby they're getting stuffed into the backpack.

Bicycle Chain Locks
Padlocks
Bolt Cutter
Medical Kit
Canned Food
Can Opener
Rope
Multifunction Tool (Swiss Army Knife or equivalent)
Roll of Duct Tape
Crowbar

The chain locks & padlocks can be used to seal off an area from the horde; bolt cutter/crowbar to open up an area that’s sealed off to me.

Plenty of uses for rope or Duct Tape.

Here's something that was bothering me, but I don't think it was brought up in this thread...

I'm blood type A+ the same as Carl, and I know it's a fairly common blood type, so I did a little research to see just how common it is, and whether they are justified in draining Rick to within a pint of his life.

If I'm reading the information on wikipedia correctly, A+ is the second most common blood type in the US with approximately 35.7% of the population sharing this blood type. Furthermore, wikipedia indicates that people with A+ blood can receive transfusions from people with A or O blood types. The fraction of Americans with blood types A+, A-, O+ and O-, amounts to approximately 86%.

So, out of Rick, Lori, Shane, Otis, and at least two women (IIRC), 83% of those people fall into the 14% of the population that can't donate blood to Carl?

Not everyone knows their blood-type. Lori, presumably, knows that she can't donate.

If you're not sure about blood types, it's really bad to transfuse. And I don't find it surprising that a veterinarian doesn't have the equipment on hand to test for blood types.

They might not have known what their blood types are. Rick I can see knowing his, because he's a cop. Might be important to him. Lori, probably knows hers. There's also the potential there for blood-borne diseases that the others might have.

The rest? Maybe they've never had a reason to know it or have forgotten it. I know I've had to ask my parents what mine is a time or two.

Medusa revolver. It's a special six-shot revolver that can fire almost any ammo from 9mm up to 45 magnum.

For a melee weapon I'm not sure. I'd want something blunt; a katana can break and won't do much damage to zombies unless you get a decapitating blow. Hard to go wrong with a crowbar. A fire axe might be sturdy enough and just as useful.

I actually keep an emergency apocalypse kit on hand. It includes the following:

1 box MRE's.
1 Collapsable 1 gallon water jug
1 emergency wind up flashlight with radio and emergency lights.
1 firestarter kit. (Magnesium and flint sticks, waterproof matches, bundle of rags)
2 emergency blankets
1 package emergency flares
1 rain gear set
2 packages glow sticks
32 piece first aid kit
Survival knife
Collapsable shovel
Several Army Field Manuals (Navigation, Survival Evasion Recovery)

All that's in a storage tote in the trunk of my car. I also keep a duffel with a few changes of clothing, a coat and a pack of socks.

And yes I have fireworks in there too. I also own an assortment of hunting rifles, a few handguns and lots of tools but they don't stay in my car.

It's certainly possible someone else besides Rick could have helped Carl with transfusions. But since Rick was sure about his blood type it was easy enough get blood from him first. If the situation had gotten to the point where Carl needed transfusions for multiple days or longer then yes it might of made sense to see if someone else could have helped out. But in the timeframe involved here Rick being the only one to give blood was not that unreasonable.

I knew revolvers like that existed but I didn't know a name for them. This was another reason why I'd favor a revolver over a semi-auto because I assume it'd be harder (if not impossible) to get a clip-based gun to use different caliber ammo. When you'd be scrounging around after the ZA being able to shoot all kinds of ammo would be a great advantage.

I live in a place where we can potentially get hurricanes on top of us for 6 months of the year and I don't even have a real-life apocalypse kit ready to go.

Shane is also a cop so by the same logic should have known his. Otis was an EMT, so you'd think he would know his, and probably his wife's. I ruled out the doctor since even if he was a possible donor, you don't want him operating if he's a pint low, but as prepared as they otherwise were, I'd think he too would know his and the other woman's (his wife?).

I didn't see the latest episode yet because of the power outages in the northeast, but the recap I read said that Rick was going to donate more blood but the doctor wouldn't let him due to the risk of heart failure. Seems to me, that's a pretty dire situation.

I'll just chalk it up to sloppy writing and leave it at that. However, I am going to take a poll in my office tomorrow to see what percentage of say 20 people know what their blood type is. I'm betting it will be over 50%.

They left it comfortably vague exactly how much blood Rick donated. Without spoiling too much the timeframe this episode covered was like around 6-8 hours so we're left to assume (again vaguely) that Rick may have given maybe 2 or 3 pints in that time period.

Like I said before if they had shown Rick giving blood for multiple days in a row then I'd consider it a bit fishy. But given the way this episode went I think it was handled well enough. It was certainly better handled than the doctor magically knowing he was dealing with a bullet that had shattered into 6 pieces in the last episode.

P.S. For what it's worth I don't think I know what my blood type is offhand...

Otis and Shane, yes. However, they are also making a supply run. They probably wouldn't want to risk weakness or lightheadedness while doing so. They can be excused. Otis is already behind the 8-ball with his tubbiness. Do you want to add to that?

Patricia? She's the doc's (apparent) assistant. I wouldn't want someone operating or assisting in operation to be low on blood.

Maggie? She could be a possible, provided a matching type.

Knowing your blood type isn't really something that has all that big a bearing on peoples' lives. Unless they've been in an accident or have some family history, I imagine it wouldn't come up in casual knowledge.

I wouldn't be surprised if its less than half.

It would take the doc all of 5 minutes to check someone's blood type, assuming his vet stuff is all in the house.

Recently had some blood work done, and I asked my doc if he could have them check my blood type, because I have no idea what it is and have always wondered. He marked it on the order thing. When I went in to get the blood drawn, the lady looked at it kinda funny like, then asked another lady, "What's this?" The other lady said, "Oh, blood type." She looked at me. "You know that's $100 extra, right?" I said, "Uh, no, I didn't know that." "Still want it?"

Yup, that's how I know mine. I give about 4 times per year, so would have been fully primed to give Carl some blood. Go A+!

Yup, they tell you soon after your first donation. They might even give you a card for future donations to help you remember.

A Donor card, postcard eacch time you're eligible, and a phone call every day until you donate again, despite asking them not to. I'll give you my blood when I'm good and ready, damnit! I'm starting to wonder if the Red Cross really is run by vampires.

Also, and not many people are probably aware of this, but they usually also do further screening to determine if your blood can be given to very young children. Carl would likely have been fine, but if it was an infant, there might have been some problems there.
