Who Will Die Part 2 SSA - Thoughts
I haven't finished the arc yet, but there's something... Odd about the Numina pinup on the loading screen. Now, this might sound like open criticism, but I'm just trying to express what throws me off about it. Feel free to correct me on any and all counts.
The first thing I notice is that her face actually looks decent. No O-face in sight. I can respect this greatly. She does have something of a large nose, but that's really not the point. It does seem odd that her lipstick comes FAR below her lower lip almost until it meets her chin, but I don't really know the specifics of female makeup, so maybe that's done to make her lips seem fuller. How DO you put makeup on a ghost, anyway? I really like her hair. It's both sensual and reserved, which is quite hard to pull off in artwork, but what is that vertical "rim" at the back of her head intended to represent? Is her hair from the left somehow twisted and wrapped over the top of her head and coming down on the right? If that's the case, then why is it as long as her hair on the left? Wouldn't you need a very uneven haircut to pull that off? The next thing I notice is that her right hand REALLY stands out. I'm not sure what it is, maybe the way the bottom of the palm juts out makes her hand too big for her tiny wrist, or maybe her fingers are a bit too long. I can't quite say. What I CAN say, however, is that her index finger seems unnaturally short, much shorter than her ring finger. Now, I do know that some people's ring finger is longer than their index finger, but I'm not sure if it's usual for it to be longer by THIS much. I immediately start comparing it to her left hand holding the skull, which appears larger larger than her right, despite being in the foreground. Maybe it's just me, though, I can't be sure. I really have no complaints about the left hand, other than that her index finger feels like it shouldn't be visible, obscured by the skull if she was supposed to have an even spread of her fingers. Certainly it should have been obscured by her middle finger. In fact, if you go by where the picture suggests her index finger knuckle would be, then she has a HUGE gap between her index finger and her thumb, clear on the other side of the skull. Upon reflection, he pinky looks as long as her ring finger on that same left hand. What really catches my eye even more, though, is... Why does Numina have fingernails on her gloves? And I'm not talking about pointed fingers as though the hands beneath the gloves had long nails, I mean she has actual pink fingernails AN TOP of her gloves. It's like she isn't wearing gloves at all, but instead has her forearms and hands body-painted pink. That can't be right, though, because her right wrist shows fabric wrinkles, and I can't see a reason why she'd paint her hands. They're not very obvious on her right hand, but that has fingernails, too, just not as long as on the left hand. Surprisingly, this reminds me of Wagner's artwork, a little bit. Then I notice that... Wow, she has large breasts. Not a bad thing. Not a bad thing. I like it. But as I'm looking at them, I start to notice that her right shoulder seems to be very far away from her rib cage. At first I thought it was just because her hair hides part of her neck so things just look off-centre, but that's not it. The middle of her throat goes over her centreline, which her clavicles radiate away from. However, whereas on her left shoulder the clavicle goes over the actual shoulder (which I'm not sure it should, but I don't know enough about anatomy), on her right shoulder the clavicle seems to end a good inch before her shoulder even begins, which is odd considering what the clavicle is supposed to link up with. Now, at first glance it looks like part of the collar bone may be hidden by her hair, but if her right clavicle did go all the way up to her shoulder, it would be much longer than her left one. And, yes, I know her torso is at an angle, but that rotation should have retained the length of her bones. I don't know, it just feels like her right shoulder is jutting way out. And while I'm looking at her neck and collar bone area, I start to wonder... Is her outfit made of sticky tape on the inside? I though Numina wore sort of a long sleeveless coat, so why am I seeing her clavicle bones through it to begin with? Why is it dipping down into the indentations of her body and between her breasts to begin with? It feels like that coat is made of shopping bag nylon or something equally as thin, while I would have expected a coat to be made of a thicker material, especially with that high collar. I know that in comic books, you essentially draw naked people then trace tights over them, but I honestly thought that Numina wore a coat? Finally, her eyes. They're pretty, but what is she looking at? At first I thought she was looking at the magical skull she's holding in the "oh Yorick poor Yorick" stance, but no. The way her head is tilted up, the skull is actually below her full forward line of sight, so her eyes would have to dip down in their sockets, but instead they're as far up as they can go without opening the eyelids wider, which makes her gaze actually point straight up into the sky. It almost feels like she's looking at the moon, but that can't be as the moon is in the background. Then I thought she may be looking at something forming from the pink ectoplasm that the skull is evaporating, but it would have to be just out of frame, so... Can that be it? Also... Where is Numina's back? The panel is sort of leaning towards her back, which makes her look like she's leaning back and holding the skull up in the same fashion that a doctor would look at an x-ray against a ceiling light, but then it occurs to me that I should be able to see part of her back or at lest part of her side below and behind her right arm. The only explanation for why that's invisible that I can think of is if her torso really does end where her coat sleeve suggests it should and that her large breasts just make her torso look much bigger than it is, but that means her right arm is REALLY sticking out. Finally - and this may be a stupid question to ask, but which set of her teeth are we seeing in her mouth? Looking at where her mouth is in relation to her jaw actually suggests they should be her upper teeth, but then doesn't that make her mouth shifted somewhat high up on her face, or does it just suggest she has a very sturdy lower jaw? Those can't be her lower teeth, as it seems a bit too high on her own skull for it to be them, and it would make her face kind of... Weird if they were. The reason I'm asking is the way her lower lip droops forward and down, we may actually be seeing both rows of teeth where they interlock with each other. That's pure curiosity on my part. --- Again, I don't want to come off as bashing on the artwork. Compared to Tutorial Sister Psyche, Numina is AMAZING. But there are just some things about that pic I can't quite grasp visually. As I said, it's very possible I just don't understand how things should be proportioned and directed, so if you can correct my misconception, I welcome the clarifications. |
I've said it before, though - just because something happened in comic books doesn't necessarily make it a good thing to bring here. Comic books have their good bits and their bad bits, and I honestly see no reason to specifically and intentionally bring the bad bits when they can be avoided.
And, yeah, I've had a problem with killing a signature character as a publicity stunt. To me, it demonstrates a profound disrespect for canon characters, to be reduced down to marketing ploys. There are better ways to make an emotionally engaging story. |

I'm really just wondering how long you stared at it.

and now, my thoughts:
I liked the splash page this time around. Numina seems drawn in a different style than her in-game model or even typical comic art; it looked almost art noveau to me, fitting for a character of her (actual) age. Maybe it's just the pose/profile.
My Science! character was paired with a young magician and a brawler when I ran this arc. There was lots of facepalming involved. (Magic and MJ do not get along at all well.) Notably, she had absolutely no idea of who Darrin was when he showed up.
The Rularuu cultists made me think immediately of the Chick tract parody, "Who Will Be Eaten First?"
I blew the last question the Wisp asked because I didn't read the clue closely enough, and assumed that Rularuu's greatest antipathy would be toward his most un-Rularuu aspect, Faathim (who, of course, dwells in the Chantry). It seemed entirely appropriate (and ironic) that Rularuu would label a being of such pure goodness as "a monster".
I took what seems to be a somewhat different route in the last mission; I followed the sound of the glowie and ducked right instead of going to any office, guessed at the middle drawer containing the key (I was right), and then the rest was just a series of alternating fights and portal leaps with a nice scare at the end.
All in all, a fun little arc with some good opportunities for roleplay and reactions. I'll be trying the villainside version shortly.

Okay, I have only run this blue side so far:
Soloed with Beyond, my grav/rad
Soloed with Kitsune9tails, my inv/fire Tanker
Duoed with Wilhemina Harker, my mind/storm Controller (thanks to Fulmination; it was an honor to assist you)
1: I like the writing much better this time around. It felt like I was actually investigating a mystery with stuff going on in the background, rather than just chasing after a surprisingly mobile multi-story pillar. The settings did seem less linked together, but that did not bother me. Granted, it was still chasing down the MacGuffin, but the bank sequence and the portal hopping really nailed it down for me. The interaction with the bank manager was cool, and gave you a Choice That Mattered sort of. More of this, please.
2: Note that it is really possible to interact with the bank manager despite the white reticle, and that the choice to threaten him is NOT a "But Thou Must" choice. This is AWESOME.
3: Anyone else try to go get one-shotted by Hamidon?
4: Trust Samuel Tow to stare at a picture of a beautiful woman for a half hour, then pick it apart . I think it's some of the most beautiful art I have seen in this game yet (not to say any of his individual points are wrong). I may make it my background. Still: please include comic pages behind these if you are going to have them, to provide recaps/preludes that help non-mission holders know what's going on.
5: On that note, I really appreciate the dialogue spam and that is not sarcasm. When duoing the mission as Not The Mission Holder, it helped me understand what is going on.
6: Roleplaying through with Beyond was funny, since she cannot speak. She just radiates curiosity at the bank manager and he starts stuttering about the Midnighters? Guilty much?
7: I like the experimenting with puzzle elements. Read your clues. It really gives the whole thing a feel different from 'rush through smash all' and I for one appreciate this.
8: The final Bosses were not that tough for my guys, although Kitsune9tails ended up calling Positron for help
9: But to end on a bit of a downer note: The first part was not worth $5 in terms of gameplay alone. Neither was this part. They do have new enemies, new mechanics, beautiful art and more, but unless you bust out:
- A new zone larger than Cimemora
- A couple new powersets
- A couple new costume sets, plus emotes
- A new system, such as an 'arch enemy' system or PvE base raids
...there is no way this is all going to be worth the cost of an expansion by the end. Even with the Hero/Villain Merits.
I suggest a price point of like $5 for the first part you buy (since that gates the Hero/Villain Merit per week), with subsequent parts like $2 each.
Granted, you may have vast spectacularness planted for later parts, but this is my current feeling.

Like I said, overall, it looks good. Best poster I've seen yet. I'm more asking for clarification than anything else, as I'm not an artist and I may just be seeing things wrong.

I'd say her eyes are looking up at the energy being emitted from the skull, or the answer can as easily be "the artist didn't think to line the eyes up with staring at the skull"
She has a back, but it's covered by the W in WILL, but could of just not been drawn out enough, hard to tell with the W in the way.
I think the fingernails are in the gloves and showing through and the pink you see if just from the glow coming from the skull. Looking at some of the other fingernails, they look the same color as her gloves.
Lipstick looks fine. Really, that can be summed up as, that's how she likes to wear it, costume design, or just artist error, but can be thought of anyway, but no, typically not under the bottom lip, but again, could be part of her hero design.
All in all, I consider that pic the best Numina pic I've seen. I;d love to see an image of it without the letters/text and just the image.

And as I said earlier, I soloed the end boss on a human-only, level 26 peacebringer -- and I am about as far from a l33t player as you can get. So it's possible. It did involve a couple of hospital trips, but I eventually got him down.
34 heroes,
20 villains, Victory, Justice, Infinity, Virtue, Triumph, Exalted -- some more active than others
For clarification...

About the fingernails - I mean that it seems like her gloves are shaped like fingernails. I suppose the point was that she's dressed in impossibly-think, incredibly clingy material (then why doesn't she have nipples?), which just happens to stick into the little groves around her fingernails (yet not in the lines of her hand?) and that could explain the fingernail shapes. Hmm... Unstable molecules, maybe?
About the back - Good catch. I tried looking around the lettering, but it's possible it's in the way. I'd like to see a pick without the overlay.
And, yeah, it is the best Numina pick I've seen, though to be honest, I never read any of the comic books. Troy Hickman's run on the Top Cow series was good, but beyond that they just weren't interesting, even with a naked Sister Psyche in them. I never much cared for the artwork, either. As far as loading screen posters go, though, that one's by far the best of them all. The Galaxy City poster is just... Bad, and the comic book in there is just so awkwardly written. The SSA1 poster was actually pretty good, but the characters are too small to really see details on them and the posters look like they were drawn up in a much lower resolution than the 1920x1080 that I run, so I couldn't get extra details from having a larger monitor.
This one's by far the best if you don't aim to nit-pick (like I did), and it's a credit to the author. I generally have a VERY critical eye for quality, so considering I didn't have anything major to bring up, I'd say that's a pretty good deal overall.
---
The story arc itself was very good, too. Is Binocolo's name supposed to be ironic because he only has one eye? Anyway, he's a pretty cool contact and his dialogue is surprisingly well-written and natural-sounding, plus his look is kind of cool.
For someone who doesn't know who the Luddites are and who Dr. Aeon is, the original introduction is quite confusing, and Binocolo doesn't do much to explain exactly how batty-nuggets the Luddites are or what they're fighting against. Still, Binocolo isn't exactly a Luddite and more a supporter with mystic-hunting experience, so that plot point doesn't really matter. Actually... Why was he made a Luddite to begin with if the Luddites don't add anything to the plot? Not a complain, just curious.
The first mission is weird, in that... Why did Darryn Wayde show up? Doesn't he want to "bring Rularuu to the here and now?" Why does he have Warshade powers? Still, the standoff was cool, and it was nice to see Montague actually doing something, other than being murdered by Master Midnight.
The Rulu Shin are a really cool faction, even though it kind of bugs me that they're using such weird boots - Bone and Organic Armour. Still their look is unique and I WANT THEIR GEAR! That chest piece with an animated eye in it is SO going to work wonders on my avatar of armed conflict. I hope they come out before Titanic Weapons. However, they have really weird description text. It seems like the writers wrote ONE description for the Rularuu's Might minions and then just copy/pasted that for all the others, despite the lieutenants being called Rularuu's Word. Giving them Rularuu weapons was a good idea, but it just makes me wish those were in the Paragon Store for sale.
The second mission was a little weird, and I KNEW where I'd end up as soon as I came into the crypt. Nice use of that transition room, though. The riddles for the Wisp were also a clever idea, though I honestly didn't get the second one. I answered all three, of course, because I've spent many hours pouring over the Shadow Shard lore, so I could have answered the questions even without the hints. The idea was good, though - it gives only faint glimpses of Rularuu without making us fight level 40+ enemies. The cell phone on the cultist genuinely cracked me up, too. It makes total sense
The last mission was even more weird. I didn't know I could speak with anyone in there, and I didn't go into the vault because... The rest of it is portal-hopping, and I'm happy to see the Horta Vines being used. I do wish they'd get a bit better graphics, though, as they remind me of the Xen teleporters from the OOOLD original Half-Life. Still, nice idea. Ending up in the Abyss was a cool move, as well, and without actually letting us reach the Hamidon, I don't think. The elite boss at the end was kind of annoying, as I realised all too late that the lieutenants could heal him to full. Oh, well. Still beat him without dying.
The resolution cutscene was confusing, but now I get what the stories are getting at - someone's powers will be absorbed by the Checkov's Obelisk and that someone will die. I don't know why Tammy Arcanus showed up right at the end since I couldn't speak with her or anything. I wish I could, even if it's just one text screen congratulating me.
Also... Why did a man named Tommy name his daughter Tammy? Did he WANT their names to be confused for each other?
Overall, I like the arc very much. I still don't think it's worth $5, but that's for no fault of the writing or mission design. I just don't like being charged $1.66 per mission. Now, give me the Rularuu weapons AND the Rulu Shin gear in a set and I'll pay you $10 for it I guess it doesn't matter, though - I'm already paying for the arc via my VIP subscription, so it's clearly worth at least that Unlike SSA1, I will actually play this one a second time, just because I really like the writing, and I actually do like Monoculo as a character.
Samuel_Tow is the only poster that makes me want to punch him in the head more often when I'm agreeing with him than when I'm disagreeing with him.

Yes. The only difference between the two versions (other than mission text) is the first mission -- villainside, instead of going to meet Montague and the others and fighting off the ambushes, you get sent down to the Midnight Club vault. The other two missions use identical maps and enemies.
|
Mission 3 has completely different starting objectives. Heroes just have to search the file cabinet in one of the side rooms and then go through a door to go into the warehouse chase to the EB. Villains have to break into the vault (getting the guards on you, who hit kind of hard for normal security guards) and in the Vault is kind of a nasty boss that hits pretty hard.
After *that* the sides are largely similar, up until the end. Heroes just get a 'thank you' from Numina, Villains will actually talk to her and can bargain with her to get a (very nice) temporary power.
Also, the villain text in the end cut scene is slightly different, for one they mention 'Marshal Blitz', heroside I'm 99% sure they only called him 'Blitz'.

1) He's a member of the Rulu-Shin and is simply trying to cover his escape with some artifacts.
By pretending to be on the Midnighters side during that fight, it would be easier for him to slip away, which he does at around the same time Mercedes comes in with the news that the skull and baseball cap have been stolen. Rather convenient that he happened to exit then, hm?
2) He's NOT a member of the Rulu-Shin and was there for his own purposes before joining in the fight with the Rulu-Shin and slipping out.
It's possible that Darrin Wade's interests actually conflict with the Rulu-Shin. He may want all the credit for freeing Rularuu and thus, be the only one to gain power and be spared.
3) He's an Aspect of Rularuu in disguise who is pursuing his goals without regard to the safety of his followers. He helped the Midnighters because his own goal (Likely, the procurement of a number of rare artifacts like the Power Amplifier that is mentioned in the villain version of the arc) was more important than the lives of a few of his followers.
This particular rumor has been around for almost as long as Wade himself has been around. Aside from his desire to free Rularuu, he actually happens to have a facial structure that's not unlike the Aspects we've seen already.
4) I really hope this isn't the case but it's entirely possible that the Devs forgot about that particular aspect of the character and just wanted all the Midnight Squad related characters present for that battle.

I just realized something. This is 7 arcs. Maybe the question we should also be asking is, "Who is the traitor?" Perhaps a member of the Phallanx is not the saint the purport to be.
I think what bugs me about Darryn's presence isn't so much why he's there as he just feels completely pointless in the story, just thrown in as if to say "See him? He exists. He will be relevant later." Because, honestly, what is his involvement. He appears, he uses Stygian Circle a few times and he disappears. Plot contribution: Zero.
I know this is supposed to be an episodic thing and not every plot point that shows up in one arc has to be explained in it, but for heaven's sake! At least have some plot behind the cameos. This is like Darryn showing up in someone else's movie so his name is in the credits for the tie-in.
