So, Are We Allowed To Talk About Other Games Now . . . ?
You know, I am still not clear on this. I always thought it was direct competition that was not allowed to be mentioned, but I have been told more than once that it is any game at all.
Which would technically include pnp games, which makes no sense.

There was a game thread a few weeks ago that seemed to last for a few days before being consigned to oblivion, so I'm guessing video-gaming talk is still verboten. PnP game talk should be allowed, though. I don't see anything in the rules which would apply to discussing the merits and cons of the FATE system against D20--but I only skimmed the rules, so I might be wrong on that.

It seems the rules are:
1. Compare and contrast MMOs: Completely forbidden.
2. Mention other MMOs in passing: Yes. But don't go on about them and don't break rule #1. [E.g.: "I'm sure the Devs will try to get the Winter Event going right before WoW goes F2P in December." Further discussion of that point should not be happening.]
3. Mention other NCsoft MMOs: Yes. You can even discuss them, but, don't break rule #1. [E.g.: A thread about Guild Wars 2 is OK.]
4. Non-MMO games: Mention in passing, but no discussion threads about them unless they are related to the comic-world. This would be part of the rule of keeping Comic Culture forum related to comic culture. [E.g., discussion of the Marvel table-top RPG would be OK, discussion of Magic:The Gathering would not.]
At least, that's how I interpret it.

The same goes for any older games, like X-Men Legends, Marvel Ultimate Alliance, Marvel vs Capcom, etc. And what of games that are not comic book-based, but have comic book tie-ins? Mass Effect springs to mind, and many game series such as Metal Gear Solid, Legend of Zelda, and Halo all have comic book adaptations or tie-ins. Do these count enough as being connected to comics to allow discussion? Is it only OK to talk about just the comics, or can we talk about the games as well?
And what about series like Sonic the Hedgehog, whose comic book has been going for well over a decade now? The publication spun off in its own direction years ago and aside from having a well-known video game character as its lead, has almost nothing to do with the games themselves. But is it OK to talk about it? It's still loosely based on a video game.
I guess what I'm getting at is I just don't understand why we're not allowed to have discussions about any other video game. Not being allowed to discuss other MMOs is understandable, really. Other MMOs are in direct competition with this one, and even though I disagree that limiting those types of discussions is necessary, I can understand the reasoning. But limiting discussion of games as a whole just doesn't make sense to me. They're a form of entertainment very closely linked to the namesake of this very forum: Comic Book and Hero/Villain Culture. If they are considered to be competing for your precious COH playtime, why aren't discussions about things like movies and television also banned? They compete for time just as much as, if not moreso, than other games.
My suggestion to Zwil and the community team is to ease up on the game discussion ban. Again, I can understand if not agree with the banishment of MMO discussion. But can't do the same for other games.
Realistically, this is the only rule on the subject I think we should have:
- Talk of other massively multiplayer online(MMO) games is prohibited, except those published by NCSoft (Guild Wars 2, Aion, Wildstar, etc.).
Is Paragon that frightened of competition that we can't mention games like Champions Online?
In this context, it would mean that talking about games such as Batman: Arkham City, X-Men Destiny, or Spiderman: Edge of Time would be OK, since they're all directly based off of comic book characters. But as far as I know, it's still not OK to discuss these games.

We should have a nice edition war about DnD, though - that should still be allowed under the current forum rules. The rule in question (found here) reads as follows:
8. Compare/Contrast and Off-topic threads.
All of these forums fall under the general topic of City of Heroes. However, we do allow a wider variety of discussion topics in the Comic and Hero/Villain Culture forum and on the server forums. We encourage non disruptive off topic discussion in those forums along the line that fits with the community of posters who frequent them.
Political,
Religious,
The aesthetics of the human form (particularly that of models, actors or actresses),
Real world topics
or any videogame (aside from City of Heroes) topics are not allowed.
Also, please do not compare or contrast City of Heroes to any other game or product, as that is a violation of this rule and is not allowed.

I think we should at least be able to talk about console and non-MMO games. The devs talk about Team Fortress 2 all the time in UStream.

It's funny considering there used to be a massive CO thread that had rednames posting in it. Along with rednames in the Gamertag exchange thread.
Other games don't exist. That's the fiction that we've had to live under the last year. Of course, that fiction also drove away a lot of folks that used to frequent this forum.

Anyway, some of the restrictions have been relaxed, but not all are gone. Still, the new policies are an improvement in my opinion.

Just curious, since this fall is going to be a huge season for games and all. Figured the discussions might help inject some more life into our beloved forums.
I recall a thread not too long ago discussing other games that lasted a relatively long time and was wondering if that rule was relaxed or repealed. |
A really fun and vibrant culture had popped up over the discussions of current single player and classic games, and It really does feel like the casualty of ncsoft suits grabbing onto a basic principle (we dont want to host the forums for other games) and ignoring that a lot of the community got closer over (for example) our bioware threads. I miss them and it has affected my posting a lot..im only posting now because im hiding from my 360 as i think the aforementioned game actually wants to beat me up in person.
It is really really good though.

I don't know Zombie its all a grey area to me so I usually try to avoid it completely. Take your rule # 4 [keeping Comic Culture forum related to comic culture]. Okay now I know for a fact that people start thread here and discuss movies and tv. Okay a thread on the now cancelled show "The Cape' I could see .. its about a guy who becomes a super hero or a thread discussing movies like Thor or Captain America. But I have seen threads on the show "Chuck" about a guy working as a spy for the cia.. and this is related to the comic culture .. HOW! LOL
Now I fully understand them not wanting other MMOs discussed in great detail .. like you said that's almost like allowing advertising for a rival on your own servers.. that's beyond bad business practice It's insane

But I have seen threads on the show "Chuck" about a guy working as a spy for the cia.. and this is related to the comic culture .. HOW! LOL |
Chuck is a hero. He fights villains. Seems reasonable to talk about it here.

I'll just take this opportunity to point out that threads about the Walking Dead or Game of Thrones may well be out of bounds under the new rules.

Game of Thrones is being adapted into a comic book. First issue was released in Sept. being published by Dynamite Entertainment.
And this is exactly why that rule about tv shows was lifted. So that there was no Six Degrees of Separation games being played. But I still find it funny that every aspect of say, Batman, from merchandise to comics to movies to cartoons can be discussed, but that one aspect can't exist.
Just curious, since this fall is going to be a huge season for games and all. Figured the discussions might help inject some more life into our beloved forums.
