Steve Jobs, 1955-2011
Anyone want to bet that the trolls are going to have a field day talking crap about a dead man they never knew?
I had the fortune of being in this man's presence at an Apple expo (my father's one of Apple's top system engineers) and I'm very sad to see him leave this world. While he was a shrewd, stony businessman he was a brilliant inventor, innovator and orator with an uplifting aura that both amazed and bewildered those around him.
RIP, Mr. Jobs.

Not surprising, given his health issues, but it sure *feels* fast - hot on the heels of stepping down.
He may not have *invented* a lot of things - but he did a heck of a job popularizing technologies (and both adopting and dumping it - such as USB and the floppy - whole heartedly.)
Sudden news. Although the public has known about his battles with cancer, I'm still shocked. Never liked the Apple brand, but Jobs helped push the tech boundary to new limits. RIP sir.
Whether you liked Apple or not, Steve Jobs exhibited the kind of boundless inventiveness and vision that embodies the spirit of American ingenuity. There are tragically so few left like him. Let's all hope his life and his passing inspire a new generation of inventors and visionaries.

Now, each of my family members has an iPod Touch and I have an iPad.
Steve Jobs was a visionary and perfectionist and truly had a talent for pushing insanely great products.
RIP Steve Jobs.
I've had the good fortune to meet, even if only briefly, many giants in my industry. I consider myself fortunate that Steve Jobs was one of them. He was a visionary and attention to detail personified. I think the fair assessment of Steve Jobs is that Jobs had the singular knack for being lucky when he needed to be lucky, ingenious when he needed to be smart, and a visionary when he needed direction. We're not likely to see his equal any time soon.
Aloha, Steve Jobs.

I admit I am not an apple fan, my views towards the "products" can only be described as being a hater but it still saddens me to find out that Steve Jobs died. His passion to innovate and create the next big thing that people actually use and most importantly companies copy and make their own was unequaled. You may not like the ipod iphone ipad i(w/e) but these products made it so that I am able to enjoy my android tablet. Just crazy all his money and fame couldnt do more for him to live longer, such is life in the end rich or poor we are all the same.
You were ahead of your time Mr. Jobs. I thank you for many, many happy days.
RIP.

R.I.P. My real life hero and inspiration R.I.P. Steve Jobs. Wish he could of fought through cancer as I it will be different not seeing him in the WWDC stuff. He will be missed dearly.
I wasn't really a fan of Apple until recently (when I decided to give the IPhone a try. Brilliant piece of work, that phone). Still, I can appreciate everything Steve Jobs has done for the computer/mobile industry. He was one of the people that inspired me to get into the industry.
RIP Steve Jobs. The world has lost a really great person.
My generation - post war baby boomers - has lost one its titans. RIP Mr. Jobs.
Okay. A Mac fanatic I'm NOT. Personally, I despised the cult of personality culture fostered by Jobs and his company.
But the man himself was fairly admirable. He was a visionary who wanted his visions brought to life, whether anyone else could partake of the vision or not. He built a company from nothing to an industry powerhouse. Then, after he was ejected from said company, managed to come back anyhow and rescue the company from certain extinction. Not only that, he managed to turn the company into an even BIGGER industry powerhouse in the doing.
Whatever I thought of the fruits of his labors, the man himself, and many of his actions are admirable.

My condolences to his family and friends, my sympathies to everyone who feels a loss after Apple's computers, software, and devices touched their lives.

I could make jokes about an iCoffin or something to that nature, but it would take nothing away from what the man had accomplished in his lifetime. If anything, jokes like that only show how much he has done.
I understand there are many people grieving over his passing. My prayers are with them, for what good it may do. But life should be celebrated, even in death. The man had a great run, and accomplished much more than most in his time.
I want people laughing at my funeral. I don't care whether it's laughing with me or at me; by that point I won't know the difference. I think I'll instruct the home to put one of those big red clown noses on me for the viewing, so long as I die in a manner that leaves my face intact.
Where to now?

Its a bit of a shocker all the same to see this. Did not know about it until I saw this thread. The industry will be poorer without him.
Very very VERY few people in the world are capable of doing THE VISION THING like Steve could. Even fewer people are capable of selling other people on that vision, and bringing it to everyone we know.
Good job ... Steve.

Hats off to Mr. Jobs. I was a staunch PC user before college: didn't understand Apple OS, didn't see the attraction. But since I didn't want to deal with viruses while away at school, I bought a Macbook instead of a PC laptop. I never got an iPhone, and don't really want an iPad, so I'm far from a cultist. But the Macbook won me over and I've been a happy Mac user ever since.
Rest in peace, sir.
@Winter. Because I'm Winter. Period.
I am a blaster first, and an alt-oholic second.
Steve Jobs was not innovative in the sense that he invented new technology. Where Jobs innovated was developing technology that was accessible and easy to use. By doing so, he probably made more of an impact than most innovators of his day by developing technology that changed the world, for the better in many cases, myself included.
Were it not for Steve Jobs and Apple, the Social Media revolution may not have happened, which is pretty much what my career is all about. I may have been a late adopter to Apple products (iPhone, Mac Book, iPad for everyday work use, but still PC for Gaming), but I always appreciated what he contributed towards making technology easy to understand and, dare I say, cool.
Here's to you Steve.

Steve Jobs will be missed.
He lived his life like every day could be his last.
I'm sure he had no regrets when he left us.
I went to a computer expo with a friend back in 1982 or 1983. We walked around looking a the "luggables" and proto-desktop offerings. We wandered over to a booth labeled "Apple" and the demo doll took a "mouse" and wrote the word "Lisa" and it magically appeared on the monitor of the Apple Lisa she was demonstrating.
It set my brain on fire. I ran home and spent many hours trying to replicate that on my TI99/4A with a joystick. Without that event, I might never have found my calling and started programming.
Thank you, Steve Jobs. Rest now, you've earned it.

A great source of joy is gone.
I am surprised how truly personal his passing feels and I see this mirrored in the messages from other people. His brilliance and excellence made the life of countless people happier.
Thank you very much, Steve Jobs.
Perhaps not the right section of the forum for this, but it feels right.
Goodbye Steve Jobs, I admire your work and celebrate your accomplishments.
