Who Should Have Been the Carnival Queen?

I'm not exactly satisfied that Desdemona was the one to be the Carnival Queen...or the fact that she was necessary for the Underground Trial.

It was my understanding that Des was a "C/D-List" style character that doesn't make many appearances and is sometimes a plot device. However, making her into the Carnival Queen implies that she's far more important to the lore. Not to mention, the necessity of having her alive makes her more important than the player.

In my opinion, there was someone far more deserving of this. I think Penelope Yin should have become the Carnival Queen. I mean, Yin is supposedly the most powerful psychic on the planet....amplify that with the power of the mask. Also, Desdemona embodies the "Rogue", doesn't she? Rogues look out for number one. As much as Han Solo would love to help the innocent, it's about the money and fortune first, and less about the good deeds. Penelope, on the other hand, would jump at the chance to help people.

We've seen Penelope grow a bit. We help her rescue her father in Faultline, we defeated her guardian, the Clockwork King [Plus, teaming up with the Clockwork King to fight the Hamidon Avatar would be awesome], in the Lady Grey TF. She deserves a little payoff.

Do you agree/disagree, who do you think should wear the mask of Carnival Queen?

Having done my first UG last night, the story is pretty annoying. Desdemona is the new Statesman for some reason, and is the key character now.

She is, apparently, Statesman's new protege. One wonders just how the chick with the whip and tight black leather outfit managed to get that, um, position.....

As I've gathered it, 20-29, she's a Villain, 30-39, she's gone Rogue, 40-50, Desdemona has seen fully the error of her previous ways (and those of her mother) and become a hero, learning under Statesman, the person she had previously (wrongly) blamed for the death of her mother.

Tyrant has his granddaughter for that. Statesman, to his credit, isn't that much of a perv.

The key part of that is the word was.

This is, clearly, how she moves beyond the C/D List and becomes A/B on her personal heroic journey. In a way it is kind of cool that within the game, as we progress in levels we get to see an NPC also progress and reach heights of power, rather just being presented with something like "here is Statesman, he's important".

Now, to your point, would there have been a better choice... probably, but then it wouldn't be someone we watched develop. And... which Yin? Primal or Praetorian?

Yup. Frostfire goes through the same evolution.

This is why I don't let the "lore" of this game bother me too much. I think it's cool there's a large backstory this game is based on, but I don't let the particular details and/or rectons of that canon conflict with my own characters' stories. YMMV of course.

Desdemona's been slated to be one of the new sig heroes since her creation. We get to check in with her contiguously throughout her development and she is a character with power who has a broader story than someone like Penny Yin.

Another important aspect of that story is that she also has Maelstrom as a counter-weight to balance her story - the Devs learned never t leave critical stories unbalanced to avoid the universal cry of "Devs hate villains"

I don't know what crimes Desdemona is actually guilty of, but the idea that Frostfire is now a hero is one of the game's biggest Wall Bangers (which is really saying something). The tip mission that powerposes your character as accepting him as one doesn't help.

The trouble I have with Desdemona on the Underground trial is that it's co-op, and I have villains who are genuinely antagonistic towards her. I don't mean we "don't get along", I mean I burned her house down, sent her to the hospital, and kicked her puppy. It's not the type of thing someone would ignore "for the greater good", y'know?

I've also always disliked Desdemona for being the Rogue poster girl despite not having even slight rogue-like tendencies in her persona. She's not a rogue, she's a "hero with a past".

My main problem with the setup is the way it's presented in the particular trial. "Go play sidekick to a C-lister who's waaaaayyyyyy more important than you" is not very endearing.

And yes, Des is a C-lister. Maybe she'll grow into a bigger role, but for now, she's a third rate wannabe who's only in the trial because, in-canon, Statesman had tickets to the Steelers game that night or something.

i think they used her cause shes basically the only hero mm out there and pets are a lot weaker than statesman or anyone in the phalanx for that matter

the last thing the devs want is the NPC to overshadow a league of poeple AND be more important than the league

I did NOT kick her puppy.

Also, little Miss Yin is still a minor. In Praetoria they may take little girls away to Mother Mayhem, but I can't see the Freedom Phalanx sending our version of the tweenager into the Underground Trial.

I haven't done the trial yet, but i think this might make sense.

The incarnate system is supposed to be about our heroes ascending to the level of greatness formerly reserved for the game's iconic characters. At the same time, the iconic characters may be taken down a notch or killed in the signature arcs.

Desdemona's a reflection of "one of us" working through the moral challenges and attaining greatness.

Because Penny doesn't look as good in booty shorts.

Desdemona was a C-lister with not much in-game backstory who nevertheless became the Going Rogue poster girl and official CoX booth babe. At some point, they had to answer the question "who is this chick and why should we care?" Well here we are. Now she's important.

A low-level villain like Frosty getting "redeemed" is way less reality-bending than the proliferation of "heroes" who farmed the Freedom Phalanx in the LRSF for all those years.

The alignment system allows and encourages that kind of transformation and character development. I don't actually have a problem with either Frostfire or PC hero-villain sideswaps.

Sounds like a supergroup alt team we need to do.
- Pick a server,
- have forum contests to come up with a costume.
- have another contest to come up with characters and biographies
- and since Samuraiko came up with the idea, she'll do a video similar to the introductions at the start of the games!

- As a bonus, we'll get Steelclaw to break out a fresh spreadsheet, come up with the stats, and play a whole fantasy-superball season against himself. ... no, scratch that, he'd end up changing the rules and reroll everyone right before the playoffs.

I don't have any issues with Desdemona in her new role. I thing there are bigger things in store for Penelope Yin. I think Penny might be Mother Mayhem's main threat.

Primal Penny wouldn't make much sense - but Praetorian Pemny would, as she's the daughter of Praetorian Vanessa - but she's also a prisoner in the asylum, so that'd mean we'd have to launch an attack on it to get her out - we'd be an army of Rustys coming to save the Mirror Kingdom from the Shadowlord
