Doctor Who: The God Complex 17/9 (9/17)

Another great episode in my opinion, started out funny, then got creepy and finally his with an unsuspecting emotional punch.

Loved the monster costumes and also the clever little nod to the 4th Doctor story "The Horns of Nimon".

SPOILERS!!!!

Are Amy and Rory really gone? I somehow think they'll be back for the final episode... but it makes me wonder if something really nasty is in store for them...

Reminded me of The Curse of Fenric.

However, it turned out that Smith was not a time-travelling Terminator

Obvious rip on the Labyrinth and the Minotaur from mythology.

Amy & Rory? Not buying it for a second. Ol' Doctor gets all maudlin, as per standard procedure.

It amazes me how many episodes the whole series has gotten out of the concept of "Run down a hallway".

When the doctor opened the door to his room you could hear the Cloister Bell. So his room most likely had to do with the Tardis dying. She is after all the one thing he has complete faith in.

Karen and Arthur have both confirmed they are back for next season (or next series whichever you prefer). So our trio remains intact for now at least.

Good ep. I thought I caught a little of River's theme when the Doctor opened his door, but maybe I misheard.

I am amazed at how Rory continues to improve in every episode. Give him another season and he'll be too awesome to contain in one show.

Also: Six years of casual play begins to look an awful lot like one year of hardcore play.

I quite like that Rory simply has nothing left to fear since, when you look at it, the main big fears he should have, he's already lived through.

Spoilers!

He lost his child this season and just the last episode he lost his wife, he's lived through losing both the things he holds dear to him, so what left is there for a man to fear who has lived over 2,000 years ontop of the stuff above. So he has no faith in God, he has no faith in the Doctor (especially after last episode), he only has faith in one thing, himself.

Wow Rory is all kind of awesome.

A real showstopper!

I was reminded of the 4th Doctor dropping off Sarah Jane (and K-9).

The cryptic message (getting tired of those, really ) from the minotaur-thing almost makes it seem like the first episode of this season is the final death of the Doctor.

Maybe, but it was already done over 30 years ago.

We will honor the past, and fight to the last, it will be a good way to die...

Spoilers...

So I think whilst Amy and Rory will appear in later episode, it will not be as a companion capacity like before.

In 2 Eposides, the Doctor will be dying afterall.

I would argue that he doesn't even have faith in himself. That is another kind of faith after all. His faith in himself would have been incredibly shaken after the events of the previous episode.

I quite enjoyed this one. I really liked the way they played with the editing, camera angles and the music was really interesting. And I totally called the Nimon being (at least sort of name-checked) involved, and yet I was kidding when I did so. :P

With that in mind I expect the next companions will be 4 teens and their great dane.

The alien mole-like guy reminded me of the pacifist in the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode Allegiance

I'm a little surprised that in the speech the Doctor gave about standing "over your grave" he didn't say "I've done that one time too many". Not that Adric had any grave. But I guess that goes to show how much the current production team hates to work with the old show. It feels like Amy and Rory are just coming into their own. I wouldn't care for them just to make guest appearances from now on.

He reminded me of an alien from ST:TNG as well, but for me it was Klim, the guy who ran the junkyard in the two part episode where Picard and Data go to Romulus to see Spock.

Really? In an episode that references Horns of Nimon?

And really, I thought it was kind of implied that he'd had it happen before, there wasn't an actual need to say it.

Doctor Who has always been continuity light, no reason to start making references all the time now.

Great episode. Just finished it.

You know. Thinking about it I really wouldn't mind Amy and Rory getting their own spin off series. Like Torchwood or the SJ chronicles only set in space. After all there is no reason that former companions have to stay on Earth. And I definitely couldn't see those two settling down to a quiet rural life.

I would still love to have them as the current companions of course because they work so well with Matt. I just don't want to see those characters fade away to occasional guest spots as so many past companions have done.

I found parts of this to be quite terrifying, what with my fear of ventriloquist dummies and clowns.

Though I did enjoy it. I hope Amy and Rory come back.

Honestly? I could. Especially Rory. That's part of the reason I like him. He's not...resistant to adventure like Mickey, but he's a very down-to-earth, no-need-to-search-for-it kinda guy. Who knows, maybe when the Doctor gets to be his age, he'll think about settling down, too.

Still, maybe when the season's done, River can go spend her intervening days with the folks and we can get a Swiss Family Pond spinoff.

And I hope too, that Amy and Rory will be back.

They will be. River is willfully staying in jail for murdering a good man and all signs point to Rory. River wouldn't stay in jail unless she wanted to be and atoning for killing her father is a very good reason.

But that doesn't track because
1) Who kills the Doctor? Also River? She's in jail for killing one man
2) River's programming was to kill the Doctor and that was completed (but then, she evidently tries again and "succeeds" but we know obviously not permanently)
and 3) Arthur Darvill is signed for another season (airing in 2013 )

When I saw Rory storm onto the Cybership in A Good Man Goes To War it hit me that the "good man" might possibly be him, but the information we've gotten since then doesn't quite seem to fit.

I'd suggested Rory as River's victim some time back, seemingly reinforced by that scene in the jail where she looks really out of sorts when Rory stops to talk to her privately. That said, Melody Pond actually did "kill" the Doctor, and was not arrested for it, even the attempt, and she's been out on her own at hospital and college for a bit: time enough for the galactic police to descend on her. That seems to reinforce the idea that the Doctor is not the victim. But with the twists and turns in this series, who can say?
