None of the servers are especially empty and you can team even off peak hours if you know where to look.

The fact of the matter is, as the game gets older the playerbase gets more introverted because the people who persist stand out more from the people who are just passing through; you know who's in for the longhaul and people naturally gravitate towards friends they think will stick around. Players have formed their cliques and tight mini-communities on every server, but it does not mean they don't welcome outsiders. It does mean you have to make the effort to introduce yourself, join the right chat channels and know where people congregate in every sense.

In short, it's not so much the population has gone down unacceptably, it's that the population has become more focused and formed little orbiting communities that don't spend most of their time in Atlas Park Broadcast.

Welcome to City of Heroes HiddenLeafNinja!

I do have a bit of advice on mind that could help you with your brute, or just about any character you make in the future.

I highly recommend that you try to enhance your offensive powers to accuracy first, that would be the yellow enhancements with a cross hair symbol inside it. For the reason being that no matter how much damage it does, it's a waste of endurance and time if the attack misses, which is why slotting your attacks with accuracy generally helps you land at most 19 out of 20 attacks for a less frustrating experience in combat.

If you need any help in game, you can catch me as @Oneirohero

And on that note, because you're a Brute, you can forego Damage enhancements in the early levels. I recommend slotting your attack powers with Endurance Reduction enhancements:

And slot your toggles with their respected resistance/defense enhancements first. Attacks cost more endurance than toggles ever will, so make sure you can keep pumping out power by reducing the energy it takes to do so!

Welcome to the City of Heroes Community!

The advice that I'll give is to never be afraid to ask questions, whether here on the forums or in game. The Community is, by and large, extremely helpful and a repository of useful information.

Welcome to the game.

Another problem with the SG list is there's no way to know how active it is or who to get in contact with based on that list. What I've done with my SGs is to put my global in the beginning of the description, like so: [owner:@<myglobalname>] and then the real description. Not that it is likely I'll get anyone interested in my SG, but at least they know who to talk to.

Welcome to the game.

Here's my biggest tip for new players; Never let anyone tell you you're playing something "the wrong way." There will be too many people who will want to say "you should really be doing ..." Ignore them. Take your time, read everything, learn what works for you and what doesn't.

Ask questions.

Until you get comfortable with the game, feel free to ignore most or all of the following...

The Market.
Incarnate Abilities
Invention Enhancements
Task forces
Badges
Merits
Alignments
AE

None of those are essential to the core game. There is plenty to do without them and you can always come back to them when you feel ready.

Last bit of advice: Have fun. This is a game.

Welcome aboard. I've been here off and on since launch, so if you want someone to show you around feel free to join the Champion server and message me (global is @nicoliy).

One thing to realize, as well, is this - while other MMOs have a lot going on outside (basically a lot of hunts, kill 30 bats to get 5 bat nose hairs for one person, etc etc) a fair bit of what goes on in COH are instanced missions. Appropriately, much of what happens happens *inside* buildings and warehouses (and caves.) (That, and we have a LOT of zones to spread people out.) This is part of why going with global channels is so handy.

In short, if you can't find people to team with, it's not because they aren't there, but because the basic teaming tools in the game are kind of bad.

This fairly true. One way around it is to find a group that has open membership, or events to announce or recruit members. Perhaps check out the Player Event Forums here:
http://boards.cityofheroes.com/forumdisplay.php?f=568

You can participate an event or get in on a regular running "superteam" as they start at level 1(ish).

I've personally taken multiple hiatuses... hiautusi... leaves of absence from the game, and it was always the people (my regular running friends) that brought me back.

(Shameless plug time)
My running group, for example, is holding an event with races, trials, raids, and prizes before the launch of CoH:Freedom (the f2p launch of the game Coming Soon™). Details of our event are found here:
http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=266876

We'll also be starting our new themed superteam in early September. In the new one, everybody will be on characters with a Darkness set as their primary, secondary, or both. Details on that are found here:
http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=266770
(End shameless plug)

You don't have to participate in ours, or any if you don't want to. For many people, however, a regular running group is a huge asset to learning the game and progressing. Our group (we've taken to calling ourselves the Justice Superteamers... cause we run superteams... on Justice...) is just one of many. We're also not exclusive; many members of our group are also in Iron Eagles, Repeat Offenders, and other less publicized groups on various servers.

Check us out... or don't. It's up to you. To echo a sentiment by many so far: welcome, and have fun!

Actually, you could argue that the teaming tools are sufficiently good for this game, most of the people who want to team at any given time already are.

Well, there are those I'd call noobs or n00bs but that's for those who can't learn basic things. The new guy here would simply be a newb (being a newbie isn't a dirty word here).

I just wanted to say welcome to the game. as you can see from the responses to your post we are as a player base very eager to please and in being helpful.

I noticed that no one has mentioned the population difference between villain side or hero side. generally the population density is lighter on redside (villain) than blue (hero) at least thats the way it is on Freedom server (where my super group and I reside) also on yellow side (Preatoria) the enemies are much tougher at lower lvls than on red/blue side and Preatoria typically has a much lower player population than red or blue because the content only goes to 20 and you don't HAVE to start out in Preatoria as previously stated. The only real reason to start in Preatoria is if you want to be a villain archtype playing on hero side or visa versa. but at lvl 20 you can get tips missions and work your way to switch sides at that time.

to get the most out of your play time experience I would highly recommend shopping around for a good SG. this can be tough however as most supergroups don't have what it takes to last. some peter out after a while due to certain features of the game changing/not being supported and more or taken out of the game (cough, base raids, cough)or not constantly revitalizing the membership on a regular basis which keeps the veterans around while keeping the membership fresh.

I personally have found a great home in an SG that has been around from day one of the game. one of the reasons we have been around so long is that we are always doing stuff together and when we recruit new people they go through a trial period to see if they mesh well with the rest of us. (this can also be a folly of many other SGs if they dont do this because it does not guarantee the quality of members in the SG.) we do this to weed out the ones we don't want to play with us and the ones we do. this may sound harsh but would you want a supergroup member who is a jerk or doesnt want to be part of the group or doesn't make you feel welcome? the trial period has nothing to do with how new to the game you are but all about your personality and how well you interact with the group at large.

Now I am not putting all this out there specifically to advertise my SG (though I will give you the web address for our site so you can check it out) but to give you an idea of what to look for in a good strong SG as there are millions out there and most don't have what it takes to be a really good one. The biggest of which is the amount of activity. I hope all this helps.

P.S.
You may notice in the signature of a lot of our Forum posts (such as in mine) something that says "Arc ID (numbers)". these are story arcs that each of us have made in the Architect Entertainment buildings found in most zones. they are meant for personal story telling and creating your own missions which its great for but it is also abused and used for power leveling. I personally would recommend avoiding AE buildings all together till you are comfortable with playing your toons (slang for "character") and the rest of the game for two reasons
1 power leveling can make it harder to find teams since you "should know how to use your character at that lvl" and with PLing you don't have the time to get the experience enough to play your toon properly. also in PLing you suddenly find your self with lots of enhancement slots to enhance but not enough money to enhance them all along with needing to replace the enhances you had in already as they are only good for 3 levels unless you have invention origin enhancements (which cost more than other enhancements).
2 most story arcs (like mine) have Arch Villains in them which can make it extra hard to do and if your not that experienced then it just makes it even more challenging. Also many personal made story arcs tend to be MUCH harder than regular missions. each arc however has a description on its difficulty level, lvl range and if there is an AV or not.

When you hit that team that really gels together, you won't want to go back to WoW and Wow-wannbes.
