I'm also less of a fan of all-melee superteams. In my mind, the whole concept of superteam is the stacking effects of ATs / powers chosen that make the sum much greater than the parts. Melee severly limits how much those stacking effects can be chosen. We tend to work around that somewhat by adding in Maneuvers, which makes a difference, but not as much as stacking buffs from a Corr / Def / 'Troller / etc.
That said, if I had to pick a melee superteam, I would pick Shield Defense, because of all the melee sets, it is the one designed with a team focus in mind. That, and Shield is on my list of powersets not yet played to 50 (although I know EF already has one).
Still, I think when the voting comes, I'll be picking some other theme for the synergy effect. For example, I've been on a mostly fire-powerset team before, and it was fairly fun. This superteam tends to build even more group-focused than that one did, and I would like to see just how far the idea can be taken. I feel that a fire team is inevitible for our group sooner or later, and I'm looking forward to that eventuality.

Woot, looking forward to it!
Already have my new machine up and running oh so smoothly with Ultra Mode even.
Just gotta pick an AT and powerset now.. -
Not that it really matters, but the one I saw a couple weeks ago wasn't a bot.
Created new Titan Weapon character, decided to run the new tutorial. Was claiming rewards, setting up macros, arranging powers, etc., etc., and saw a gibberish name log in. Just when I noticed and started wondering if it was a spammer, they tossed their message up on /hc. As I clicked Ignore as Spammer, they turned to me and tossed me a present via Holiday Cheer, then immediately logged out.
A bot wouldn't know to find somebody to use Holiday Cheer on. I suppose it may have been an attempt to drum up good press for their site, and I appreciate the free gift (I think I got a Summon SnowBeast?), but it didn't stop me from Ignoring, and I'm still resolute that I'll never use their or any similar service.
The ones that publicly advertise seem to be quick throwaway characters / accounts, but from my experience they have a person physically at the machine logging it on, and that takes (at least a little) time & effort.
Players: Keep reporting them as spammers, and never patronize their services. Devs: keep working on methods that cut into their profit margins. Eventually the money may not be worth the time taken, and you won't see any more of these (or at least not as many).
In the meantime, anybody tempted to pay for inf should instead check the market forums for guides and pay attention to pricing of items on the auction house. While sometimes I hate paying prices for some of the items I want, I've never had to avoid any but the most expensive recipes on the market, 'cause inf is not hard to come by with a little experience.
And if it's xp / levels somebody wants, try running with a static or regular group, like the Justice Superteamers (current team here) I've been running with for a couple years now. We run a new theme group every few months, on Friday / Sunday nights. Everybody who is able to show up at least once per week on one of those nights is guaranteed to hit 50 within those few months, and have a ton of fun in the process. Likely end up with some good drops and inf they can send alts along the way as well.
. . . Huh, I didn't originally intend that post to evolve into a shameless plug.
Guess that's just where my mind is now that we're discussing the new theme. Keep an eye on the Justice server forum if interested, we'll probably post details within a month or so when we've figured it out. -
As multiple people have already pointed out: play what you're most interested in (within the theme). Our superteams are built to allow anybody to show up and succeed as part of the group.
If you don't have something you're interested in yet, think about powersets you've never tried before but could be fun. Shield Defense has a shield costume part to match just about every primary and fit thematically, for example.
If this still doesn't narrow it down enough for you, fall back to a buffer. As I already mentioned, our teams are built to allow anybody to succeed no matter what they bring. Having a couple buffers around contributes heavily to that. Pick Defender or Corruptor with Dark Blast, and a +Resist or +Def set, or perhaps Kinetics (always high in demand).
This superteam looks to have a lot of interest so far, so I predict our first month of teaming will have more than one full team, and probably more than two full. Even if we're heavy on +Def or actually have identical builds, we'll probably end up splitting to get everybody balanced and included, so we'll just split the duplicates.
Also, no matter what you pick, consider team friendly pool powers:
Leadership (we stack so much Maneuvers you benefit almost as much as from a +Def buffer, and if you do have a +Def buffer, it stacks beautifully)
Medicine (works great on superteams lacking active heals, like the old /Trick Arrow and /Traps teams, but never hurts to have even on heal heavy teams)
If your build is just too tight for 2-3 powers from those pools, fall back on Recall Friend and help allies get accross zones faster. -
Tomorrow!
Get your level 1 Blaster and / or level 1 Dominator rolled up in advance to participate in the races. 1.7 billion inf and 1,000 merits total in prizes! (for the Friday portion, additional prizes for the Sunday portion)
After the races, see you at the ship raid: 100 million to whoever gets the GM defeat! -
I've run a few doms over the years, and I had trouble getting into the playstyle. Despite this, my Fire/Fire perma-dom is still one of my favorite characters, and actually my most advanced Incarnate.
The major difference is that he's got perma-dom. He was poster-boy squishy / weak right up until I spent hundreds of millions of inf to keep his dom up at all times. The permanent mez protection and +mag to mezzes so they can lock down whole spawns (including bosses) from the start are complete game changers for doms. The free full end bar every couple minutes makes a big difference, too; I find myself forgetting that I have Consume more often than not. It's unfortunate that perma-dom requires such an investment.
After he pulled off enough recharge for perma-hasten as well he became unstoppable except vs. the nastiest spawns and mez-resistant targets (AVs). -
While we have attention in this thread, anybody interested in our group doesn't have to wait until we get the Darkness themed team running. If you have a high-ish character on Justice already, we've still been running on the regular schedule for many months now: Friday and Sunday at 8 P.M. (Eastern) / 5 P.M. (Pacific).
A few of our group are still running their most recent superteamer 50s (the gun-themed ones), some have moved to former themed characters (I've been running my /stone brute from our /earth team), and we even run the occasional alt that isn't from a previous superteam at all.
Lately we've been running Lambda's, whatever the Weekly Strike Target is, end-game TFs for Alpha slot components, the occasional +4 ITF, whatever we're in the mood for.
If anybody wants to stop by and run with us, just /chan_join Justice Superteamers and we'll organize up at the scheduled times. We'll also use our channel to fill for I-Trials and TFs during the week that we join / run off schedule. -
As I was reponding, Starry Night gave the short version above me.
Longer version:
Quote:We considered this in our discussions during running nights and decided against waiting. We have a 3-5 month turn-around on superteams. Knowing this, we didn't want to wait up to 4 months or more before the next team (started working out next team details in early July). Once we decided to hold the next team before I21's launch, we then held our vote for what it would be, and Dark won out; the vote was held after the proliferation announcement, so the voters could take that into account.why not wait until blasters get dark sets and (dominators?) in a couple of months?
The same argument could also be made to wait for the new sets: Time Manipulation, Beam Rifle, and Street Justice. Perhaps one or more of those will be well designed base a superteam around, or fit into another theme (we've already added a Time / Grav / Kin concept to our list for future voting).
This way, with our turn around rate, you'll probably see an announcement for our next superteam near-about late November to early January. This should also give time enough for our devs to clear up any major bugs that get found after the new and proliferated sets go live.
Also of note is this detail from the announcement:
While we won't turn down anybody that wants to join, no matter how late into the current group, as arafel points out, this theme is already wide open as it is. Considering the original superteams were exclusively single-set (all Trick Arrow, all Traps, etc.) adding another AT steps away from our current theme further. Nonetheless, if one of our members throws together a Dark Blaster alt on Justice and we don't happen to be running a TF too high that night, we probably wouldn't refuse it on an occasional basis. -
I was torn between some melee AT with Dark Armor and a buff or debuff set. Always wanted to try out /DA, but not in any major rush.
Saw this thread was heavy on melee and /Dark Miasma, and decided to fill a gap of mine. I don't have any major debuffers on Justice, so I rolled up a Defender - Radiation / Dark Blast.
Currently sitting at level 2 in Nova; I may or may not get to 4 before we start. Lower levels blur by fast in our superteams, so I doubt it'll make a difference. -
Quote:This fairly true. One way around it is to find a group that has open membership, or events to announce or recruit members. Perhaps check out the Player Event Forums here:Players have formed their cliques and tight mini-communities on every server, but it does not mean they don't welcome outsiders. It does mean you have to make the effort to introduce yourself, join the right chat channels and know where people congregate in every sense.

You can participate an event or get in on a regular running "superteam" as they start at level 1(ish).
I've personally taken multiple hiatuses... hiautusi... leaves of absence from the game, and it was always the people (my regular running friends) that brought me back.
(Shameless plug time)
My running group, for example, is holding an event with races, trials, raids, and prizes before the launch of CoH:Freedom (the f2p launch of the game Coming Soon). Details of our event are found here:
http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=266876
We'll also be starting our new themed superteam in early September. In the new one, everybody will be on characters with a Darkness set as their primary, secondary, or both. Details on that are found here:

(End shameless plug)
You don't have to participate in ours, or any if you don't want to. For many people, however, a regular running group is a huge asset to learning the game and progressing. Our group (we've taken to calling ourselves the Justice Superteamers... cause we run superteams... on Justice...) is just one of many. We're also not exclusive; many members of our group are also in Iron Eagles, Repeat Offenders, and other less publicized groups on various servers.
Check us out... or don't. It's up to you. To echo a sentiment by many so far: welcome, and have fun!
