Hi I am a CoH noob. I just downloaded the game I like it so far but I'd like to have a friend to chat with while I play. Are there "guilds" or something like that in the game? If anyone has any tips or any vets with wisdom to pass on I would very much appreciate it. Thanx for takin the time to read my post.

There are Supergroups which are like guilds.

The best way to meet people is to team with others. Look for teams running looking for members. Don't be discouraged if you get a bad team, it happens.

Depending on what server you play on, you can join popular global chat channels for that server in game. You may want to go to the sub-forum here for your chosen server and introduce yourself and ask about what global channels are on that server.

The equivalent of guilds are called Supergroups. However for teaming Global Channels fulfill the role that guilds tend to fill in other games. If you are looking for people to team with the best option is to find the global channels for your server and join those. Asking in the forum for your server should help you.

Welcome to the forums!

As a side note, from your name I can tell your a Naruto fan. If your up to date with the manga posted on the interwebs, search for the "Naruto, Again!" thread. You can find some cool people discussing the new releases of popular manga. If you haven't read everything, then spoilers. :P

You want to play on servers with lots of people on them not some ghost town. When this game lists servers to choose from it puts ghost towns at the top of the list and the metropolises at the bottom. Virtue and Freedom are the two most populated servers, some would even say overcrowded. Every other server on the bottom of the list is a heavily populated server.

If you're looking for guilds on the server you pick, head to City Hall in Atlas Park, right behind the City Administrator is a Super Group Registar, fat dude with glasses. In his menu is the option to list the top 100 supergroups on you're server. The Groups listed on that list are wieghted by money so top 100 is a very good way to describe the list.

The list is two columns right is prestige(money) the other is a Super Group message. Most of the groups listed use this space to recruit new members, so they post contact information in the spot so new recruits can find them. Website and ingame. Its this games version of personal ads for Supergroups.

Its a good game, I hope you enjoy it. Just be careful of striking up too much convo in mid battle, it happens and those who feel they should be carried by me don't get re-invites.

Welcome aboard and welcome to the dark side... Mwah ha ha ha!

Brutes are a good choice for someone just starting out. Just pick evenly between your primary (attack) and your secondary (defence) and you should be fine. The key to a good Brute is to get your Fury bar up (under your health and endurance bars) and keep it there. That will make your attacks much more damaging as long as you've got the endurance to keep going (use the blue inspirations for more endurance, convert three of any other type into them by right clicking on them and selecting combine). Fury diminishes over time so the key is to keep attacking and getting attacked. Once you've got some defence and endurance covered, BRUTE SMASH!!!! is a tremendous amount of fun.

Enjoy.

My main advice here would be to try a little bit of everything and look for the activities that entertain you the most. Don't worry about numbers and perfect builds or anything like that for at least the first 20-30 levels, just play the game as it comes. And if something seems too difficult, don't be tempted to give up too quickly. Just keep on trying and eventually you'll figure it out.

If you're playing a Brute, then you'll be avoiding many of the most annoying problems the game has to offer, but that still doesn't make it easy mode. Keep an eye on what you feel like you need more of - more damage, more protection, more speed, etc. - and see about working on that at level-up. Also, yes, Fury is important and you should try to keep the Fury bar up, but if it starts stressing you out, don't worry about taking a break and letting it drop. The Fury mechanic is set such that you can build up to about half bar very easily, and your bar will decay very slowly at first, so Fory isn't that hard to get going from a cold start. It's certainly not worth turning your game into work if constant rushing isn't your thing.

Finally, if chatting with people is your thing, I'd suggest investing in the Global Chat system. I don't know what global channels Freedom has, but you can probably ask around on the Freedom forum, and possibly look into using channels. It's not complex at all, and it will give you access to very busy public channels. If you meet people you like and want to hang out with, ask to put them on your Global Friends list. This is ideal because then you can see that player whenever he's online regardless of which character or server he's on, and you can chat with him across characters, factions and servers. That's a GREAT way to keep in touch with people and socialise even if you're not directly teaming with them.

If you're looking for a Super Group, though, I'd be cautious. There are a few charlatans out there who recruit you so you can make prestige for their group but don't give anything back and essentially use you. Don't join a group just because it's high on whatever list or just because someone's broadcasting for it. Look for people you like first, THEN look into joining whatever SG they may be part of, if possible.

And above all else, have fun

Fortunately, all the servers have people on them and none of them are ghost towns. Some people, unfortunately, have this idea that if they're not lagging out because of the number of people in a zone, there's nobody there. However, teaming isn't difficult on any of the servers, plus they all have their own 'personality.' Part of the fun is finding one that fits you. (Or more than one - I'm happiest on Pinnacle and Victory, for instance, but have characters everywhere. Can't stand the Freedom server, generally.)

One thing to realize, as well, is this - while other MMOs have a lot going on outside (basically a lot of hunts, kill 30 bats to get 5 bat nose hairs for one person, etc etc) a fair bit of what goes on in COH are instanced missions. Appropriately, much of what happens happens *inside* buildings and warehouses (and caves.) (That, and we have a LOT of zones to spread people out.) This is part of why going with global channels is so handy.

Also, the "Top 100 supergroups" thing is a misnomer. All it lists is the amount of prestige (think "Super group cash") they've accumulated. It tells nothing about the group itself - for all you know, they're doing nothing but farming for that total. (Think of it this way - is a complete jerk with 100 million dollars better than the guy who hangs otu with you, picks you up when your car breaks down and is fun to hang around, but only makes 30k a year? No. Cash - real life or in game - means nothing when looking for good people.) Plus, the registrar is fairly useless - it gives you no information on what the group's about or how to contact anyone, unless the SG leader has deigned to put in (and update!) that information. Which is pretty rare.

A far better way to find a supergroup is simply to team, frankly. Find people you have fun playing with, and join them. That way you get to know about them, and they get to know you - you get to see if the group's a good fit for you or not before hand. Alternately, head down to your server forums when you're settled in, and ask around there.

Welcome to the game! I'm thinking you're gonna get along fine. Already, you picked a good name. "Sychonaught;" pretty good, sir. Most people, on first entry, name their character something like "BurningRippleGuy."

Sycho - psycho
Naught - astronaut, but also dreadnought. I like it!

If you ever need some help, you can send me a tell @RadDidIt or @RadDidItAgain (to send a "global" tell, type /t @<name>).

Some servers are significantly easier to get on a team than others though and I find the lower population servers frustrating to do teaming on depending on the time and what I want to do. Granted, the bulk of my playing time has been on Freedom so just about anything is going to feel slow in terms of teaming compared to it. These days I tend to play a lot on Virtue mostly because it's player base has to be around Freedom levels and I have channels set up to where I get more conversation going on those channels than the rest of my channels combined and that includes multiple channels for Freedom.
