Wait, voice-overs?

Is there any more information how that will work? Especially from the technical perspective?

Because if they're planning to implement a way to link in-game dialogue with sound file resources, I'm imagining a giant player-driven voice acting supplementation.

And it looks glorious.

I'm reasonably sure it's just like regular voice-overs in other games and MMOs. They likely just hired some voice actors (or got Bob from accounting) to do some voice work for the new low level missions (or possibly just the new tutorial).

Ugh... Yeah, I've yet to see an MMO get decent voice acting which didn't infuriate me. I still remember the horror that was "I am out of range. I can't cast that. Not enough mana. I am out of range." Ugh! I had to ask my friend to mute his speakers more than few times. Also, there are about ten thousand pages of text in this game, so there's no chance in hell we'll get voice-overs for all of them. This leads to the old Baldur's Gate problem - only, like, five characters in the whole game speak and everyone else is still silent. This creates a kind of dissonance I don't really want to see.

Of all the things I wanted to see - and better audio being one of them - voice overs seem like the least productive use of money.

As long as we can switch it off. I like having my own music on in the background, I don't want terrible voice acting to ruin that.

If it's 'voiceover' like Prometheus in the Itrials, fair enough.

If its like that and recorded, that's ok too. Having explanations being voice overs and only one type in-game (i.e. like the Itrial explanations) that works better IMO than having to try and keep track of floating text boxes all over the shop.

Will wait and see. Would still love dynamic music though

To be fair, I don't expect the voice acting to be terrible. They're professionals, after all. I'm just concerned with the sheer volume of acting required. Didn't EA spend, like, eleventy billion dollars for voice overs on the Star Wars MMO?

Actually, I think my favourite was the guy who did Mender Silos in the I11 trailer. For something that was largely just panoramic shots of the game, that guy made the trailer awesome.

Like I said, player-driven. I doubt we'll ever get any kind of "official" sanction, but imagine if you could copy a bunch of MP3s/OGGs/WTVs into the game folder and hear the mission briefing narrated to you by some other player who recorded it.

I'm pretty sure it was one guy who did the voices for everyone in that video, sans Ghost Widow.

Pretty much, voice overs are very expensive for MMOs since they require studio time and scheduling with the talent.

Although, it's very easy to 'cut corners' and not do studio work for the voiceovers, but you'll find many quality issues crop up then.

But it needs to be a bit cheesy - this is a comicbook game

Then I'll pass on the voiceovers.

I MUCH MUCH MUCH preferred that Distinguished Comic's voiceovers compared to the Controlling Opposition's.

You can have cheesy for some characters like the Joker or Foxbat, not for the entire game.

Eleventy Seven and counting; personally I'd prioritise cutscene VO, that way you're not having to worry about the disconnect between people with VO and people without it as you move through the game.

And they will make it back many times over. I agree on VO for cut scenes. I really don't need it for anything else.

Just so long as there's still dialogue that can be read and it's not just a voice telling you what to do.
