Desperate Guy should get the girl!

Personally, I think they need to add a desperate girl, to go out with desperate guy, and when they get together, turndown girl can change her name to lonely turndown girl.

The problem is it's in an ancient evil magic book that the Thorns, Legacy Chain and Banished Pantheon and Carnies are all also after.

If the joke were extended to Praetoria, the best twist on it would be to have "Drunken Girl" (as in, BLIND drunk) hitting (quite futilely) on a "male" Clockwork. Her speech is slurred and has plenty of innuendos about "his stamina" and other thinly veiled references to "his" performance potential (which are funny because "he" isn't flesh, he's literally a Bot). The Clockwork simply responds with stereotypical decline phrases rendered in Clock Speak, like ... CLK.WRK=!INTR.STD ... and so on.

Extra bonus points to the Devs if they can make the "unfortunate couple" circulate around Studio 55 (with her "chasing" after "him").

Extra special bonus points for occasionally throwing in a "Metronome Response" rendered out in full conversational syntax (turning her down, of course) ... which surprises the Drunken Girl enough that there's an almost immediate extra "hit on" attempt, which promptly gets shot down in classic Clock Speak.

Now THAT would be a worthwhile project for a newbie Dev to cut their teeth on.

It's the end. But the moment has been prepared for ...

Copied from the Humphrey Bogart Estate facebook page:

Quote:
‎"I'm not too happy about it. I think this business of winning the girl in the picture is highly overrated. I think you get more sympathy if you don't win her." - Humphrey Bogart on beating out William Holden for the affections of Audrey Hepburn in "Sabrina," something that was uncertain until the final days of shooting.
The existence of this thread proves the point, I'd say.

Bah, the truth needs to be told!

In the ancient days, Turndown Girl and Desperate Guy were really cosmic entities known as anti-matter lass and matter lad each representing the sum total of thier repsective part of creation and in time as it had occurred many times before. Anti-matter lass and matter lad are inexorably drawn towards each other unwittingly taking a part in both the destruction and creation of exsistance.

However like all things that consider themselves "living" anti-matter lass and matter lad dont really want to give up thier "life" even though its been a cosmic cycle relentlessly played out countless times before.

So here we have it in Pocket D where the two are still inexorably drawn toward each other yet having willfully stripped themselves of much if not most of thier memories and power by binding themselves in mortal form. Turndown Girl and Desperate guy play out thier unknown game hoping to stave off the desctuction of the universe for as long as they possibly can.

I recall a Dilbert cartoon from the 1990's where he wrote a computer program to come up with the worlds best pickup line, and it came up with this:

"Hi, my name is Mel Gibson, did you see a dingo dog run by with my shirt?"

The joke's on us...those two are actually Praetorian spies, keeping track of all the Incarnates queuing up for Trials. Their banter back and forth is actually coded messages being transmitted back to Emperor Cole.

I think Tyrant should ask Chimera to explain the failure of his spies to provide any useful info for stopping us from smashing up his dictatorship

I have found myself in the roles of both Turndown Guy and Desparate Guy at different points of my life, and my personal experiences put me on the side of those who think Desparate Guy should look for a more willing partner.

Way back when I was really little, I once playfully proposed to a girl who lived down the street from me, and she was extremely enthusiastic in accepting. I was also young enough to have not quite outgrown the "girls have cooties" stage of my sexual development, so this was more than I bargained for. Thankfully, she got the idea that I was uncomfortable with it and backed off before it reached the point where any therapists needed to get involved.

A little later in life, there was a girl in high school who I had a huge crush on. I would buy her gifts on Valentine's Day, hang out around her, the whole deal. But then one day I overheard one of my classmates tell another "He's going to force himself on her." But he didn't actually say "force himself". That was the single most hurtful thing I'd ever heard anyone say about me, and the shock of realizing that people thought I was capable of something so terrible brought me back to my senses. So at that point I backed off a little, and while she and I never actually were in a relationship, we still remain friends to this day.

But thanks to that incident, and a drive to not give that high school classmate the satisfaction of saying "I told you so!", I tend to err on the side of "no means no" in my dealings with the opposite sex, and don't really have much sympathy for Desparate Guy in this scenario.

So now poor old Desperate guy is looked upon as Take Her By Force Guy!

Harsh lol!

I think her 'witty comebacks' are pretty poor tbh. We also don't know how he deliers his cheesy pleas. I like to think that he's got a self-aware ironic grin on his face, but she's too dense to see he's mocking the whole 'pick-up-lines in clubs' trope.

No, that's pretty much accurate. He's been hanging around her, trying to chat her up despite her clearly worded "NO!" He obviously has no respect for her boundaries or her "no."

I really don't care for how that story ends IRL. And I hate the very idea that she "has" to be nice to him, simply because of his insistent persistence. That's a cultural narrative that needs to be taken out and put in the trash. She's got every right to choose with whom she associates and is not 'fair game' just because she went out to go dancing.

What you're doing is essentially ignoring her clear words and saying that she really wanted to talk to that guy. This is NOT COOL, and you should never do this in real life. When someone sets a boundary, you respect it. Saying "she really wanted it" is, in fact, blaming the victim and giving blanket permission to desperate guy to pursue her as far as he is willing to do so, without any respect for what she says.

This is an important lesson.

Yep, definitely the 90's.

I just thought of something. All of the thread so far, including my previous comment, has been based on the assumption that it's the same couple each time. What if there's more than one Desparate Guy/Turndown Girl pair?

I don't visit Pocket D too often, since on Virtue the Rikti War Zone seems to be the main Trial rally point, so I don't know if they have the same character models every time. But the times when I have passed through, I've always imagined it to be a different couple each time. Like one day it could be Desparate Guy Alex and Turndown Girl Barbara, and the next it might be Desparate Guy Chuck and Turndown Girl Danielle.

Thinking about it like that does take a lot of the unfortunate implications out of it.

As it happens, Desperate Guy and Turndown Girl are not just descriptive names, these are their professional superhero monikers. These two form one of the most dynamic crime-fighting duos in the city. Their ability to work together to solve crime is as striking as their complete inability to get along with each other otherwise. Despite this, they tend to hang out together in Pocket D when relaxing simply by force of habit.

I'm starting to think that Turndown Girl ought to replace Azuria as guardian of the M.A.G.I. Vault. Nothing would ever get stolen ever again ...

It's the end. But the moment has been prepared for ...

Asuria doesn't guard the vault, she's just the person we get sent to talk to. The vault is in Galaxy City... for now.

And 'as far as he's willing to do so' is apparently limited to trying anpther cheesy line.

You can't read 'rapist' into his minimalist actions without reading 'crazy' into hers, if you take their eternal 'conversation' as one and not just a representation of one moment in time. If I saw this exchange between teo people in RL:

Him: "will you marry me?"
Her: "No"
Him: "will you marry me?"
Her: "no"
Him: "will you marry me?"
Her: "no"
Him: "will you marry me?"
Her: "No"
Him: "will you marry me?"
Her: "no"
Him: "will you marry me?"
Her: "no"
Him: "will you marry me?"
Her: "No"
Him: "will you marry me?"
Her: "no"
Him: "will you marry me?"
Her: "no"
Him: "will you marry me?"
Her: "No"
Him: "will you marry me?"
Her: "no"
Him: "will you marry me?"
Her: "no"
Him: "will you marry me?"
Her: "No"
Him: "will you marry me?"
Her: "no"
Him: "will you marry me?"
Her: "no"

and it went on like that literally for hours and neither of them gave up on getting their point across, I'd assume that they were both insane.

She's within her rights of course to stand wherever she wants in the club, but so is he, and giving someone a compliment isn't a crime. Extrapolating any future behaviour from his so far known actions is unfair without doing the same to her.

It's also possible that her comments of 'lame', 'tragic' etc are specific to the lines, and he simply hasn't found one thst would make her laugh yet.

I prefer to look at them as the opening stage in a rom-com (it's standard in such for the two eventual lovebirds to be antagonistic at first), rather than some awful serious indictment of sexual politics.

You could start a 'Desperate Guy needs to be removed from Pocket D because he's teaching our kids that No means Yes!' thread, of course - in RL, if she really was disturbed by his attentions, she might prevail upon the management to throw him out. Then she'd need to be renamed sth inoffensive, I guess. 'club patron' maybe, which is deadly boring but neutral in all ways.

Ps she has never danced, as far as I can see.

Inability to take no for an answer, lame chat up lines, poor taste of style...

I know who Desperate Guy is!

PS: Just because he's persistent doesn't mean he should get a break. DJ Zero should take him aside for a "Check yourself before you wreck yourself" and some advice. He does fine with Luminary.
