Nope, try again.

In the first post in this thread, you were talking about how she should be won over by his "idiot charm and persistence."

You do not get to have it both ways.

As to the rest - you are wrong, and incredibly wrong, and if you would like me to educate you as to precisely *why* you are wrong, send me a PM and I'll get you some material. I'll ignore your strawmen for now, thanks.

For now, I'm out of this thread.

I have to agree with Smersh. I find them both pretty creepy, which may be one reason why I hate the D.

While I don't want to imply that harassment and assault should not be taken seriously, I have to say that parts of this thread are a bit of an over-reaction to something that is intended as a single-note joke.

I dunno, maybe there's a Architect mission somewhere in all of this.

I'd rather they didn't change them, but I don't think it's some kind of world-ending mess if they were to do so. Cripes, is there ANYTHING people don't consider an outrage? We're talking about some goofy throwaway characters, for heaven's sake. But now I realize that Making A Point is more important than that. (I forget, after all, I'm writing of the people who think City of If You're Not Part Of The Solution, You're Part Of The Problem, Sheep! (aka Praetoria) is a wonderful story.)

I think you've hit on a winning story. Head to Hollywood and pitch this hero-buddy concept as a natural progression from the old wacky cop-buddy movies!

I don't worry so much about the "single-note joke" part. I think you're correct, there.

It's the part where he should "get her" as some kind of sick reward for his persistence that turns my stomach.

Maybe they're hired actors to make that certain nightclub ambiance. Just like "Sound Technician", "Desperate Guy" and "Turndown Girl" are professional titles. Note that every single other civilian has a name, unless they're using their job title. It seems right for someone like DJ Zero to hire people like that to make the club seem safe for civilians. I mean look at his regulars. That guy over there is on fire. This one is a tentacled alien. And the guy over there really should reconsider his choice of spandex.

Anyway, it's an easy job and you get to be paid to hang out in an inter-dimensional nightclub. How is that not awesome? You just have to have a really, REALLY high tolerance for bad puns, no matter if you're applying for a Desperate Guy or Turndown Girl position.

I mean, I can't think of any reason that they'd keep at it in the exact same spot in the nightclub around the clock for so many years in a row unless it was organized somehow. Plus, we never see any of them alone.

Could also be Nemesis Automatons, but that'd be cheesy. However if they've mastered the bad pun to the extent of Desperate Guy, we're doomed.

Nah, the joke should be a lovey dovey couple Praetorian side, just have them sickeningly saccharine, maybe lace half their conversations with baby talk and cutsie-poo nicknames.

Why does anybody assume that a Praetorian door to Pocket D would lead to a different nightclub than the one we already party in? ;-)

I think some of the guys in the thread are maybe projecting some of their RL frustrations onto those two.

If you're posting vehement arguments and rebuttals in this thread, you're dorking out bigtime. That's bad coming from me. I'm one of those "internal RPers", often cognizant of the way my characters fit into this world as if it were real. But on the same token, it is a comic book inspired world. It's far more enjoyable if you can separate serious story content from brief comic relief.

Those two characters make a funny joke and punchline. The first time I overheard them was in the Ski Chalet, I'm guilty of chuckling. Maybe it'd be funnier if she actually punched him one of these days. Like, on Valentine's Day. In the face.

It's true that today's adult-oriented comic books handle hot-button topics occasionally. True to form, some of City of X's story arcs are surprising jewels in this regard. But Turndown Girl and Desperate Guy aren't meant to be representatives of anything substantial. Those who see something more are only here as representatives of their own experiences (and biases or frustrations), not Turndown Girl's or Desperate Guy's.

Maybe the only thing that separates Desperate Guy from romance (with someone other than Turndown Girl) is a better shirt and a better attitude. He may need a completely new personality too, and body and face. It's pretty hopeless, but who knows? Turnup Girl, a plant controller, could be waiting right around the corner. Actually IN the corner, talking to the plant. She's so shy! Wait, where was I going with this...? Oh yeah. Deep psychoanalysis of two punny NPCs.

We never see him nurse a drink and decide to move on, or try again with another girl, or go home and sign into a MMO to make himself feel better. Their story remains in limbo, never "moving on".
This reminds me ominously of Maddie Hayes and David Addison in Moonlighting, or the excitable Sam Malone chasing after Rebecca Howe in Cheers. Once they had their moment, both series collapsed. Of course, I don't remember if Sam ever had his day, I recall Rebecca chasing marketeers all the time...

Sometimes, it's best to quit while ahead.
