Boo. Apparently it's not new books. Rumored to be a HP MMO.

Hopefully they do this right. HP is built for an MMO.

How many months of game play is one school year? Lets say it is two. After a little over a year of playing you would have graduated and then what? Buy the Harry Potter: Get a Job expansion?

If they wanted they could make each year be a year. Or they could go for a faster leveling approach like Guild Wars and not necessarily make story progression directly tied to leveling. They can let characters choose a specialty like potions and have the final stage being a prefect, which the character can stay however long they continue playing. They also don't necessarily have to set it alongside the timeline of the books in that they would be another student beside Harry.

There's different ways to go with this. Don't know why you'd dump on the possibilities right out of the gate. o.O

I just explained to my non-gaming wife that yall were stating this might be a HP MMO. She turned to me and stated, "Oh, I'd be all over that."

This is the woman that in 7 years of playing CoH I've managed to have her create ONE costume for me. At no point have I ever seen her show even the slightest interest in anything video game related.

Guess I'll need to build a new rig for her.

Considering that I'm a Ravenclaw in my university's Harry Potter club, if it's an MMO HECK YEAH!

Not sure if this would be good or not if in the one in a billion chance that it was created.

The same group did this music video. Some of the other videos are more of a more religious leaning since the group is from BYU.

i recall discussing this with marcian some time ago, but a potter mmo would actually be a very good idea. heck, wizardry 101 is already a proof of concept, and tying it in with a successful franchise..i see it working. It would be really nice if it included more than jsut hogwarts, the other houses from the tri wizard tourney could work as factions without getting too back-stabby. even better if you could be part of the non-affilliated non humans(pity dragons in hp dont appear to be sentient).

IF it is an MMO, instead of focusing on just Hogwarts it could be focused on the Harry Potter world at large. That could be feasible.

Indeed. Including this one.

It would be really really cool if it was a Harry Potter MMORPG. I hope that if it is, that you can either choose what house you can be in, or you have to answer a series of questions (not alot maybe 5 at the most) and based on your answers the game picks for you what house you'll be in. The only downside with getting to pick yourself is do you know how many Gryffindors and Slytherins there will be, I change my mind maybe they should just stick to having to answer the questions and the game picks for you.

I would not mind that if say Hogwarts was like the "Praetoria" area where you learn the basics in a nice confined environment before your placed in the world itself.

From the site:

Pottermore is a free website that builds an exciting online experience around the reading of the Harry Potter books.
Come back on 31st July to find out how you can get the chance to enter Pottermore early.
Didn't see the video there. Color me unimpressed...and slightly still confused.

Yeah, from what I gather, it is basically a forum to discuss the books and "for the first time ever, buy the ebooks."

Yay.

There is also something about participating in the stories (fanfic section?) and Rowling says she'll be sharing information regarding the HP universe that she's been "hoarding since forever".

Nothing terribly exciting, IMO. Had this been launched some 8 years ago, fine, but now? Meh.

It's kind of too sketchy to know exactly what it is. It partially sounds like a repository of extra info about the HP world, but then you're going to be able to do stuff like be sorted into a house and have a wand chosen for you. Kind of cool, I guess, but I'd like an MMO more. Though there is the possibility that it could stink, of course.

More details (along with some typos) at the Leaky Cauldron.

After trying out the beta, I can say I am rather unimpressed.

The setup is that you do indeed follow the story but what you follow is just the basics for each chapter consisting of a few panels of art depicting the scene. A lot of the scenes have a few things hidden in them but the whole thing seems to be made to make you read the books instead of just going to the site. If someone just goes through each of the chapters in the system, it could easily be completed in an hour. There is some interesting new information that you can read about as you move through the story such as information about wands or specific people. Getting a wand and getting sorted just involves a series of questions that don't really reveal their possible correlation. I came to that conclusion because all 4 house are about even in terms of members at the moment.

I wouldn't call Pottermore a game although it has a couple mini-games like brewing potions and dueling. Dueling is currently down so I have yet to try it. Potions on the other hand have no real purpose except to get 5 house points. The process is still getting worked out but right now, it is more frustrating because of time limits. To add to that, you can't do anything with the potions once they are done except store them or send them to others.

I wouldn't call the current version much of a social networking site either because there is no way to effectively chat with others. You can post comments in places like the end of chapters, the common room, and the great hall but that is it. It doesn't even look like there is a way to send messages to friends.

With how little there is to do, it doesn't deserve the hype that some have given it. It may be worth some attention when the new books are released but there just doesn't seem to be much to keep people there during the gaps. An actual MMO would have been a lot better than what they have done.

Note: Since this thread isn't that old, I decided to just post here instead of taking up forum space with another one.
