Goofy things you thought when you were new to the game.

Here are two of mine:

1. When I first discovered the Midnighter Club, I thought, "Oh so this is kind of like a Guild for Magic Origin characters to give out missions and stuff." And I assumed there would be a similar groups for the other Origins. Since my one and only character at the time was Mutant I figured I was only getting a part of what it offered and if I had a magic Origin character there would be more things going on (Note at this point my only character was around level 10 and I knew nothing about Cimerora).

I never played an MMO before and my mind set was games like Oblivion which often have something like that.

2. I was very confused about how Safeguard missions worked. I would enter the bank and then when the message said the crooks were getting away I would run out and go to the escape van and play goalie as the bad guys tried to enter it because that was what the Map Marker said to go. Stupidly, it never occurred to me to go further into the bank until I did one on a team.

I actually have one character who never earned the Raptor Pack because I kept failing when doing it this way until he leveled out of it.

Any one else make goofy assumptions?

When I first started, after a friend coaxed me into playing, they invited me to a mission with a bunch of level 40s. I was told "stay up here near the war walls." The map was destroyed and everything on the map was WAY higher level than my character.

I had no idea what a powerlevel was so I though that missions with lowbies teamed with high levels forced low levels to stand next to the war wall. We just stood around and chatted till someone said, "exit."

A few days later, when I was invited to a team, I ran over to the war wall and just stood there thinking that what I did a few days earlier was how the game was played.

About a minute later, the team leader asked in chat, "Umm.. where'd the tank go?" Having no clue that a tank was actually supposed to tank, I replied, "I'm hugging the wall. Where is everyone else?"

30 seconds later I was kicked from the team.

Suffice to say, I learned pretty fast how the game really was meant to be played. :P

That is hilarious. Sorry that was your introduction to the game.

Standing in front of the doors at the train station in Atlas Park watching the destinations scrolling overhead and waiting for the right one to appear to where I needed to go, and panicking when it didn't. My friend had to tell me to click on the doors and pick the destination from the list. I'd assumed it was like a proper train where you got on and it would stop at all the stations listed in order

I used to think I should stop to rescue the civilians in Atlas Park that were getting their purses stolen. Even when I was level 10 and they were grey to me. Because, you know, they needed my help.

That if I sidestepped when an enemy attacked me, it'd miss me.

That I could actually somehow equip and use that runebound armour I picked up.

There are more, but thos are the two most striking goofs that spring to mind when I first joined the game. Hell, Im still goofing even now 8 months on and after being schooled in the game.

This was my very first MMO, so in my first play session after playing for a bit I needed to take a break to go to the bathroom or get a snack or whatever. I had been introduced to the game by a friend who was in-game with me, so I asked him "How do I pause?" His response was, "You don't." My reaction:

"You don't lose levels. You don't have equipment to wear out, repair, or lose, or that anyone can steal from you. About the only thing lighter than debt they could do is have an NPC walk by, point and laugh before you can go to the hospital or base." -Memphis_Bill

Unsure if this counts, but when I did the tutorial, I completely missed the thing about clicking "exit" to exit the map. I thought you had to run back to the entrance. And since I mainly soloed, there was no one to tell me otherwise. It was a couple of months before I finally found the button that let me exit the map automatically.

These reminded me of two more:

1. I was having a bear of a time beating Frostfire so finally I decided to stop for the night and log out. The next day I was shocked I had to redo the entire mission! "You mean it doesn't save my progress?!"

2. On my first character I missed the Tutorial message about training so I followed the map marker to City Hall and started doing missions. My character was at level 5 or 6 by the time I realized I had to train.

Me too! I remember taking a minute or two to run all the way back to the door where I came in, and it took me a while to notice that everyone else was just disappearing into thin air. Finally, I worked up the nerve to ask someone, "How are you all getting out without going to the door?

To be fair, though Neko is right--there was no Exit button or other visible indication that you could exit by clicking on the mission text or "i" icon. If you missed it in the tutorial, you just simply didn't know.

Never argue with stupid people. They drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

Oh, and it took me like a couple of weeks at least to realize that you could hold the right mouse button down to steer. I used to have this little game I'd play where I'd see how long I could run on the top of a fence, or on a monorail track, without falling off, just using the keyboard. ('Cause it was the only way I knew of to steer.) I had this dream that someday, I might get really good at it and able to consistently run along the tops of fences and such, not realizing that it's actually trivially easy with the mouse.

Aside from 6 slotting hover (back when it was painfully slow), I remember I used to stay in a zone doing arcs, newspaper missions etc, until I had completely out-levelled everything -- to the point at which even the highest level bosses in the zone conned grey.

hmm, its been a long time since i thought about it lol

when i first started playing the game i got a tutorial from a friend how to basically do things, and when i got my own account i solo'd almost 80% of the time, it took me about 9 months to get my first 50 lol

my first toon was also a mm and i didnt know how potent debuffs were either so my main toons first build (ninja dark miasma), i only had 4 powers from dark miasma, the heal (default power), the rez, shadow fall, and dark servant lol

i still have that build on my main as a first build, but i mostly use a 2nd build for actual playing lol

Okay keep in mind we are talking a LONG time ago but...

1. First character I vreated was in December and it was the year they gave out the jingle jets for logging on. As I leveled my character I SKIPPED a travel power becasue I already had my handy jingle jet why did I need to waste power selections on Hover or fly? Then after 30 days the jet disappeared and in my 20s I was taking hover and fly so I didn't need to run everywhere. I shortly afterwards discovered and utilized the RESPEC

2. Again very early on I took teleport as a power assuming I'd be able to click on any part of the map and instantly appear there. Of course when the reality set I I respec'd that character too and took fly... WAY too much clicking for my taste.. I dont care if it is the FASTEST way to get places

3. and the last. When the invention system came out I was on a 6 month break from the game. I came back and all that "stuff" kept showing up in my salvage tab and I was sure it was just another time sink they'd added to force us to stop playing and go sell or try to craft some silly recipe I didn't need anyway. I can do just fine with SOs why do I need all that junk? Now I don't have a single 50 level incarnate that doesn't have a 50 level IO in every slot! Heck as long as I can afford it I don't have a single 37 level that doesn't have an IO in every slot and I even try to fill all the slots on my 7, 12, and 17 levels with IOs .. between 25 and around 35 while they do degrade SOs enhancers are more powerful than IO but I will even slot 35s since they don't require constant updating. MY HOW THINGS CHANGE hehehe

After fighting Frostfire the first time, I assumed every enemy group had an AV or at least EB leader.

I was shocked that enemy projectiles would follow me around corners/behind obstacles.

OMG I did THAT too and even got on Broadcast and asked why is the train broken I can't get on. "Are you on the right side of the station NOOB?"

You may be able to find my threads on such topics as:

1. Is there any way for a low level character to afford enhancements without a high level character funding them?
2. How on earth can a "defender" set without healing work?

FWIW, the big thing that I was missing for the second: Regen continues in combat. If I'd known that I think I woulda been fine.

Goofy things I thought when I was new to the game... Lots of stuff really.

I didn't realize that the Force Field defensive bubbles were from a power-set. At one point I had gained a level, gotten a power, and just as I activated it, somebody else popped a Force Field Bubble on me. I started bragging in coaly chat about having gotten the bubblies... I was playing a Fire Tank.

I didn't realize that Radiation Emission and Radiation Blast were two different things. I have lots of memories of running with Giant Monster hunting teams that demanded Controller-Radiation... I remember one supergroup mate back then who had a Rad / Ice Defender that got kicked from a team because they weren't controller rad.

I didn't realize Plasma Shield was the anti-mez for Fire Tank. So when somebody told me that Fire Shield was my bread and butter and I'd be better off dropping Plasma shield... I used one of the respec trials to get rid of plasma shield at level 24. This was back in I6. Que two very miserable levels till I hit 26 and could get plasma shield back.

I didn't understand that request chat was only zone wide... Que LOTS of broadcasting for teams on both broadcast and request...

Something that wasn't really goofy, but I thought was goofy, was the defeat 100 Outbreak enemies. I still recall the first time I actually sat there hunting the Contaminated, mentally counting each one... and the shock when lo and behold... there was indeed a badge.

I was reluctant to change my costumes originally, since I thought by the description doing so cost real money.

I wondered about how people were making NPCs characters, since groups kept asking for "Trollers".

It took me a while to realize that that little "X" button in the costume creator is what lets you make costumes with more than just two colors.

I thought Gale was a good attack - just look at all the little numbers!
