And honestly its pretty obvious question and surprises me i didnt ask it to myself. But in the movie i guess the suggestion is that Odin is passing on the crown to Thor. But if Odin isnt dying then why is he passing on the crown. If he simply gets weak, goes into whatever that sleep chamber is and comes out why is he never not the king? The movie implies that this isnt the first time he has taken part in the "Odin Sleep" or whatever they call it. Just that this is the first time he has waited so long to enter it, and being weakened they dont know how long he will be in it.

Can anyone out their explain this process and i guess the rules of sucession in Asgard? Why would they need a new king if all Odin ever did was to take a nap?
Asgardians are immortal as long as they regularly eat the Golden Apples of Idun.

For ODIN, his Odinsleep is usually a once a year thing that he must undergo to restore his power to its peak. While he sleeps, he keeps the Odin power within him and Asgard and Odin are dangerously vulnerable to attack. The duration of the Odinsleep varies depending on how badly he's exhausted himself.

When ODIN perished years ago in battle against Surtur, the Odin power went to THOR as he is the heir to the throne and THOR finally accepted that he must become king of Asgard. After Ragnarok began and THOR figured out how to end it all for good which meant the destruction of both Asgard and all its enemies, THOR went to sleep/oblivion until the day his hammer fell to Earth and Donald Blake retrieved it and later called THOR back to Earth.

At a 47.5% drop weekend to weekend by current estimates. The above number is just comparing a Friday to Friday. Source

That must just be for Friday, because for the weekend it was 47% down. Plus, $9 million doesn't beat $24 million.

And if you're a fan of movies like 40-Year-Old Virgin and other Apatow flicks, go see Bridesmaids. It is altogether disgusting and hilarious, with very little of the sappy crap you find in chick flicks of this genre. It's basically an Apatow film that has girls instead of guys in it. Melissa McCarthy was brutally funny, basically stealing the movie.

This isn't just canon in Marvel. In the myths Frigga isn't Thor's mother either, but the personified earth, Fjörgyn or Jörd is (depending on where you look.

The myths are kinda strange here as well. While Sif is married to Thor, only one of his children - Thrud (his daughter) - is fathered by her. Thor's sons, Magni and Modi, are fathered by his mistress the Jötun Járnsaxa. Well, Magni is, Modi may have another mother, it's not quite certain that Modi's mother is Járnsaxa.
Sif, on the other had, also has a child who's father is not Thor. His name is Ullr, but we do not actually know the name of his actual father, just that Thor is his stepfather. Which could mean that Thor is Sif's second husband.

Read Douglas Adams's The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul and you will know that, yes Mjolnir has the soul of a kitty cat. That or a faithful dog, depending on the chapter...

That is strange, indeed. Makes me wonder what Thor's maternity armor looks like.

Whoops!
Slip of the tongue/fingers/thoughts there.
However Thor DID dress up as Freya once to get Mjolnir back when it was stolen by the giant Thrym...

Well, maybe not Thor, but Loki on the other hand. He's the one who spent time as a woman and was accused of having borne children.

I saw the movie and I guess it was ok but what is with all of the ethnic diversity amongst the Norse gods. I am a minority and so it's not a racisim thing but come on. The Norse gods are supposed to be Norse. They should have all been big aryan super vikings. They had a an african american and an asian, what's next Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie star as Black Panther and Storm? Other than that and the fact that Thor didn't seem as super as I would have expected even when he had the hammer, I thought it wasn't too bad. I think I liked Ed Norton's Hulk better though.

When you find yourself having to say this, you should really reconsider what you have to say.

Not at all it just doesn't work canon wise, mythology wise or logically. Could you take a film seriously where Hitler was played by Wesley Snipes, or if Jet Li played Malcolm X or maybe we could get Ryan Renolds to play Genghis Kahn.

I say its not racism because this is the internet and I am bound to get people who want to jump on the politically correct bandwagon and miss the point of my post. So I have thought it over and I still feel that way.

I honestly think it was a stupid job casting. If we are going to disregard historical accuracy regarding race why not do it regarding gender too. We could get Bruce Willis to play Wonder Woman or better yet we could get Megan Fox to play the Martian Manhunter.

Bad casting is bad.

I want you to think very carefully about this.

You are saying a black man can't do a job (actor) because of the color of his skin.

I don't particularly care how you dress up you statements beyond that point.

A black man should not play a traditionally white character just like a white man should not play a traditionally black character.

The casting directors job is to not only judge acting but also to judge the physical appearance of the character said actor is trying to portray.

Kevin james is a great actor but you don't see him suiting up in blue tights trying to play Superman do you? What is that discrimination against fat people?

A Norse god is not a one size fits all role so yes skin color, physical fitness and looks in general should play a part in casting.

Whoa whoa whoa, there.

That's just going too far.

Hey, some people are just constantly on the look out for any opportunity to assert their moral superiority, no matter how silly the reasoning. Good on you for having the guts to express a legitimate opinion that you knew would be lampooned by the thought police.

So... all those white guys playing Jesus... you have a problem with that?

Lol ok you got me. Maybe he's not "great" but you got to admit King of Queens is a funny show.

@Obitus Thanks man!

@Durakken Yes, yes I do. Outside of the biblical inaccuracies Mel Gibson got it right in Passion of The Christ. Jesus wasn't white, nor was he black, he was Hebrew, an Israeli. They shouldn't be teaching anything different in school, or in church either.

If Marvel had stuck close to Norse mythology I'd agree with you, but keep in mind that this movie is asking us to accept that the Norse gods are really super powered space aliens whose magic is actually unimaginably advanced technology, and that Odin is a peace-loving protector of the weak rather than a god of war and death. If you can swallow that, I don't see what's so hard about accepting a black Heimdall, especially given how well Idris Elba played the role. As for Hogun, the way he's always been drawn in the comics it's not really a stretch to make him Asian, though I did think he was probably the weakest member of the cast.

To me the interracial casting seemed more racist than complaining about it. I agree with Coach Hines that Norse gods ought to be Norse.

I had no problem with Michael Clarke Duncan playing the Kingpin in Daredevil, and I would've had no problem with Zoe Saldana or Grace Park playing Jane Foster in Thor, but to make a Norse god African American was just jarring. Hogun was a jarring as well, but after looking at the comics again, I can see interpretting that character as Asian.

Nonsense, everybody knows Snorri's Edda clearly refers to Odin's giant robot security guard.

I'll let this go after this post but if you're going to play the "Marvel Comics interpretation of Norse myth" card...

His complexion looks fairly Nordic in all the comcis references listed on their wiki.

'Cept these are not the traditional Norse gods. They're the Asgardians of the Marvel Universe, who, in said mythos, inspired the Norse gods.

Tales of Judgment. Also here, instead of that other place.

I'd go further than that, actually; they're Ken Brannagh's version of the Ultimate version of the Marvel version of the Norse gods. Even in the classic Marvel mythos the Norse gods really are gods. The movie makes it very clear that they are not actually gods at all, despite having been worshipped as such.
