Well, at least CO has a reasonable target to aim for then.

Actually this is not correct:

http://www.giantbomb.com/news/sony-d...toration/3149/

They are basically disputing this and are saying "when it's ready.":

"UPDATE: Sony has informed us that Bloomberg's wording, which was the foundation of this story, is inaccurate and the May 31 "deadline" does not exist. There does not appear to be any hard deadline established, only to return services as Sony determines the appropriate security measures are in place."

Once again, EPIC ******* FAIL.

EDIT: Also isn't the 31st a week before E3?

Hey, Sony?

That's karma for making the PS3 so bad in comparison to the PS2

So... it would be better if they turned the servers back on before they corrected the underlying problems? I don't know about you but if, say, my bank discovered a serious security problem, I'd be *really* ticked if they opened for business before it was fixed. "Yeah, that missing wall in the vault isn't fixed yet, but people want to cash their checks and get free cookies. We had to focus on what's important."

Is the network outage inconvenient? Yes, probably, if you are one of their customers. But it's not the end of the world. And seriously, if your biggest concern at this point is "I can't play my games!" then I envy you. I'm a lot more concerned about the possibility of ID theft, which is something I might have to deal with if the network *never* comes back up.

I can't imagine that keeping the network down is Sony's first choice - they're effectively losing customers every minute it's offline, on top of the online transactions they can't receive. And they've already stated that anyone who does stick around gets a free month, *plus* free time to match the outage. Which at this point is a solid two free months to everyone who hasn't already quit for good. And that's in addition to whatever it's costing them for the three or four security consulting companies they've hired, and the programmers and engineers who are probably working around the clock to re-write the entire network from the beginning, or whatever it is that's taking so much effort to fix.

And that's not even counting what this will cost them in legal fees, lost sales, and lost customer goodwill. (Yeah, it was the online division that blew it, but if you were affected, how likely are you to buy a Sony television at this point?) Considering that SOE just canceled several in-development games, and laid off a lot of staff, this really might kill them off altogether. So I *really* don't think they're keeping the network down just to make people angry.

I don't think anyone is saying that. What people can't believe is that their network structure was so bad that they have been forced to be down for this long. This is a classic example of how not to build your network security.

On the other hand, I don't think I'll worry about sharing credit card details with the new PSN at all. Sony can't help but have learned from this the hard way. I mean, I can't imagine that they'd want to see something like this happen again any time soon.

Yes. Things are worse. And no word from Sony on why.

If I could access my account, I'd have canceled it by now. (I was planning on doing that before the downtime, but I had been giving them a chance to amaze me with information on new updates. They amazed me, but not in the good way.)

Yeah both PSN and SOE account creation/maint will probably be rock solid after this.

I'd just like to log in to see my Station account and actually find out what credit card I used on it. >.<

You could look at your statements or call your credit card companies, instead of waiting on Sony.

I don't know why, but this almost feels like something the Onion would write.

Yes, let the company with terrible security give you free security!

What I found interesting about the two lists is that COH is holding on at number 10 fairly solidly. Hmm, bet it picks up some subscribers from this mess since people who maybe hadn't been aware of COH might have tried another super hero game that is offline and now will bounce over here to get their super hero fix.

It was at least four years ago, probably longer, but I'm not sure. Finding single charges in years of statement pages is not something I'd rather do. And since I'm not sure what card it was, I'd have to go through them all.

Yep thats my problem with PSN. I bought 1 Ratchet & Clank Mini game in 09 and that is it for my PSN purchases.

Yup, DCUO is back as well, which is good, means I can cancel the damn thing now.

All this has left a very bad taste in my mouth regards Sony, they have a LOT of work to do to repair trust now.

I wonder how many people, once they can log on, will just jump in and do the same thing for their Sony accounts?

Well they are doing a restructure if I read the new right, of how their Network Security is handled. But personally I can understand some of the irritation towards Sony about this.... But the hackers responsible NEED to be arrested. They are in no damn way in the right and sure as hell need to pay for what they did.

Of course it wasn't right. And they need to face some kind of punishment.

However, by that same token, it should never have gotten to this point. In terms of how their network was handled.

Hackers are always going to be around. If someone is determined to get in, they'll get in. But you can make it as hard as possible for them to get in. From what I've seen, that isn't what happened.
