Am I the only one who doesn't care about the story?
I care about the story, and I'm really enjoying the Praetorian invasion

Most people (so it seems) view the text box as an obstacle between the contact and smashing NPCs. I'd assume you're in the majority.
I like a good story but I don't sweat some of the details others do. Different levels for different things and different people.
I am more concerned about the gameplay than the story. The nature of MMOs (with all the repetition and such) makes any act of getting into the world and story rather difficult.
However I do appreciate a good story the first time I read it. That quickly becomes irrelevant in the face of playing it a bazillion times.
Too many alts to list.
Some players are of the opinion that ignoring the story and doing what you enjoy is shallow and akin to using cliff's notes instead of reading the actual book. It is implied that players who do this are impatient, lazy, unintellectual or even 'doing it wrong'.
Look into your hearts people. You've thought it! Admit!

If I'm looking for a game with no story, Zuma Blitz is waaaaay better than any MMO.

To me it serves its core purpose: It's just vague enough that it allows people the CHOICE as to whether it's something that's important to them or not.

Yeah I'm in this mindset as far as this game's background story goes. I consider it necessary to help establish the setting of the world we're playing in but I don't focus on the "details" and tend to gloss over any continuity or canon problems I happen to stumble over.

I honestly no longer care about the Goatee Universe story.
I'm eagerly awaiting the Coming Storm when it finally arrives in issue 45 or something.

I'm among those who don't pay much attention to the story / lore. I don't need (or want) that element to enjoy the game. Sure, I have a bio for my character and enjoy reading other players' bios, but that's as far as I need to go.
For the most part, it's good enough just knowing that I'm a super hero smashing these bad guys over here. Then, when I'm done, I can go smash those bad guys over there. Rinse and repeat.
When I want a story, I'll read a book.
I am reading a lot in the forums about how people do not like this storyline or the continuity doesn't make sense because this contact shouldn't have knowledge of this or what not.
When I play, I just "go with it" and enjoy. Often, I am not even aware of the storyline, just the objectives. Am i riding solo here? Please don't think I am asking others to feel like I do. I say enjoy the story, get frustrated at inconsistencies, whatever. All I am saying is that I am not there. |
Only you will have your own reasons as to why you enjoy your game and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that.

Skipped or not, the story is there. And some players gain satisfaction and enjoyment from it. Others don't, which is also fine, or like to just focus on one element of the offered story over others.
I think the recent noise, is that lately the story is hanging together even more poorly than normal and seems to be getting short changed.
In short, I think the point is - if the game is going to have it than use it and stick to it consistently as some of the players like it to make sense.
I very rarely read the story, I'm one of those people who view the dialog as something that is in the way of me smashing stuff.

I've just started a Alt just to try and follow the story.

Roleplayer here, so as you might expect, the story is quite important to me. It's important not only for it's own sake, establishing context and background for my characters, but also as a starting point for RP'ers like me to riff on. We've added on quite a bit, most of which is at least reasonably canonical.
I can definitely understand not being as into the stories as I am, though. For a lot of players, I think just the basics suffice, and they're not even going to notice, to say nothing of object to, inconsistencies.
I suppose I don't understand, however, those who completely ignore the story, don't give their character any sort of background, aren't into immersion, and pretty much just kill pixels. Not that I don't get that kind of gaming at all (I also play shooters...), I just don't see why anyone would choose an MMO for that kind of gaming. MMOs don't do that sort of thing as well as other game types.

The devs don't care either.

I'm sure you're in the majority. However, if you don't care, then what does it matter to you if those people who do care get a good story or not? You can click past a good story on the way to smashing things just as easily as you can click past a bad one, no?
"People don't care" is not an excuse to write a bad story. It's an excuse to write paper missions.
Eva Destruction AR/Fire/Munitions Blaster
Darkfire Avenger DM/SD/Body Scrapper
Arc ID#161629 Freaks, Geeks, and Men in Black
Arc ID#431270 Until the End of the World
I'm somewhere between I think.
I care about the story but am often able to ignore or contort it as needed to fit characters.
When a prewritten story (either canon, new content or even the well written AE arc) truly fits a character though, I tend to slow down and pore over every clue, dialogue, etc. especially if I'm solo or on a tight duo.
But often, the story, missions, maps and enemy groups tend to serve as background for mission based run and gun RP between me and a few others as we develop our characters via situational banter.
So I do care about story when it fits but can usually easily hand wave it away when I want it to be about something else.
The recent Issues are just the meta-story coming back into focus - GR was more about the details of Tyrant's dictatorship - I19 and I20 are about the bigger picture of Tyrant's dictatorship.

It's just like anything else: some people like PvP or badge collecting and some people don't. For those who like the stories I would hope this game satisfies them as well.
