Remembered another one:

Reign of Fire. Worth it to see Leonidas and Batman re-enact Star Wars alone.

Independence Day - I forgot about that one.

To me Independence Day is the theatrical equivalent of that infommercial for the Magic Bullet mixer where all the steroetyped characters sit around a kitchen counter while their British(Aussie?) friend and his... wife(girlfriend? American cousin?) make them everything from nachos to chicken salad sandwiches to virgin margaritas in exchange for listening to a 30 minute sales pitch. I just can't look away.

Hmm, mine...
Waterworld
Pee-Wee's Big Adventure (Not a bad movie, but probably one people would stare incredulously at me for admitting I like.)
The Tremors sequels
Gremlins 2

And it's not a movie, but Puni Puni Poemi. For people who thought Excel Saga was too intellectual.

The scene where the SWAT team was climbing down through the skyline and being turned into monster chow had me in stitches. The guys on the rope seeing what was happening and trying to climb back up were hilarious.

Also, I'd actually visited the Field Museum the week before I saw the movie. Spooky!

Arc# 92382 -- "The S.P.I.D.E.R. and the Tyrant" -- Ninjas! Robots! Praetorians! It's totally epic! Play it now!

Arc # 316340 -- "Husk" -- Azuria loses something, a young woman harbors a dark secret, and the fate of the world is in your hands.

I wish they'd adapt the sequel to The Relic.

Thought of another one:

The Day After Tomorrow - I'm a sucker for apocalyptic, end of the world type movies.

Hmm...

Ishtar (seriously. It was hysterically funny and I love it. "I think something went wrong and now I own a blind camel!")
The Core
Down Periscope
Rocketman (I love Harlan Williams, what can I say)
The Chipmunk Adventure (shut uuuup, I'm a child of the 80s)
Bridget Jones' Diary
Spaceballs

Yeah, I kind of have...eclectic taste.

Most certainly agree. Bad movies, but hilarious.

Alice in Wonderland (2010 version. Its a creepy, dark movie that you don't want to like but at the same time, its pretty damn good.)

Hunchback of Notre Dame (Disney version. Soundtrack... incredible. Plot and flow... top notch. Three worthless gargoyles sucking up screen time... fail. It was that close to being a superb film. I just pretend those three aren't there when I watch.)

Kung Fu Hustle (Here is a movie that doesn't know what it is. 1/2 slapstick 1/2 action. But the fight scenes are fantastic, and there are 4 major ones so its worth sitting through. Sub vs Dub... while the sub is generally better, the dub version "Do they make these for men?" when the Beast takes a guy 6-shooter... just epic. And one of the masters is really a MA/Sonic =)

Down Periscope and Rocketman I can see. Heck I should have put Down Periscope on my list
But, Spaceballs? That's a hard sell, even if many Mel fans see that as the decline of his game, it's still great fun. Heck, I don't think it's any bold statement to say that no Mel Brook's film belongs on a guilty pleasure list. Opinions may vary on Dracula Dead and Loving it, I just happen to know quite a few people that adore it.

That could be because I'm the only one in my family that likes Spaceballs. My (admittedly Mel-Brooks-loving) father says it's too "stupid".

Several films mentioned in this thread are not "bad" movies. Some are Cheesy classics, like Flash Gordon and Arnie's Conan. I have several films that most people consider to be bad, but I like:

The Spirit. Widely considered to be terrible, but I thought it was amazingly funny as extremely cheesy.
Roadhouse. Another extremely cheesy movie with great quotes.
League of Extraodinary Gentlemen. I thought LXG was a fun film. I don't care about the comic.
Van Helsing. Another entertaining film -- not great but entertaining.
Daredevil; Director's Cut. One that has been mentioned several times here.
Ghost Rider. Hated by fans of the comic and haters of Nic Cage. I mostly enjoyed it.

LOCAL MAN! The most famous hero of all. There are more newspaper stories about me than anyone else. "Local Man wins Medal of Honor." "Local Man opens Animal Shelter." "Local Man Charged with..." (Um, forget about that one.)

That is one of the great ones.

I have used a scene from this film when I teach a seminar on Laws for Debt Collectors . . . It is the scene where Swayze is instructing the other bouncers on his three rules: "Be nice. Be nice until it's time to not be nice."

I think we need a definition of a "Guilty Pleasure" film. I think of it as a movie that is generally considered to be a "bad" film for one reason or another, but I happen to like it and want to watch it on occasion, and may even have it in my movie collection.

Some are easy: "The Spirit" was widely panned by critics, did poorly in the box office and was the subject of tons of disgust and rage by fans of the old comic strip. I saw it in the theater and thought it was horrible for the first 15 minutes or so . . . until I figured out that it was an extreme campy comedy dressed up as a noir comic book movie. It was advertised all wrong, as an action movie. In many ways, it looked like an action movie with some really stupid stuff in it. Once I realized what director Frank Miller was trying to do, I thought is was funny, much in the same way that the old cheesy Batman television series and the 1980 version of Flash Gordon was cheesy. It went over the top with stereotypes to make fun of them.

The problem is that few people could really appreciate it. The mind-set has changed. If people still considered Nazis as threatening, then Samuel L. Jackson dressed as a Nazi for no valid reason whatsoever would be funny. But today, Nazis are most often seen as the subject of jokes and ridicule (i.e. The Producers), so the impact of that scene is lessened. I bought "The Spirit" on DVD and still think it is funny: corney dialog, gorgeous women treated like objects and ridiculous fight scenes in a parady of movies from the 40's. It is a "guilty pleasure."

Van Helsing was supposed to be the first in a series of films turning Van Helsing into an action hero fighting classic Universal Studio villains. It failed to get the audience and is generally considered a bad movie. I liked it, and actually have the DVD. That is a "guilty pleasure." LXG is another one that clearly fits the definition.

Now, I don't consider a movie that is intentionally bad to be a guilty pleasure. Something like "Killer Klowns from Outer Space" was supposed to be a stupid movie -- obvious from its name. Movies that fit a certain genre and succeed within that genre are not films that I would consider a "guilty pleasure." The first Matrix was very good, and the second two weren't nearly as good, but still had a huge audience. I don't consider those to be a "guilty pleasure."

Spaceballs is considered one of Mel Brook's classic comedy spoofs -- while some people don't like that style of humor, I don't think it is a "guilty pleasure."

Independence Day? It was a huge hit at the time and most people still like it regardless of its weaknesses -- not a guilty pleasure.

Waterworld: It was a flop. A hugely expensive film with a bankable actor . . . that was pretty boring in parts. I didn't like it all that much, which is the common view. So If you are fond of Waterworld, I'd call it a guilty pleasure.

Timeline: I liked the book. Hated the movie. The movie was a flop. If you like the movie, I'd call it a guilty pleasure.

Another possible category of "guilty pleasure" might be if you like a film clearly not intended for your demographic, even if the film was successful within its genre. I happen to love Disney's "The Little Mermaid." It was a landmark film that revived great animation with great voice acting, wonderful music and a new popularity. In an era where no musicals were being made, Disney turned its new, fresh animated films into great musicals with songs like "Part of Your World," "Under the Sea" and "Kiss the Girl."

So, liking a film that is out of your usual demographic might also be considered a "guilty pleasure."

I take my little brother to the cinema for two reasons.

1. He really loves going.
2. I get to watch the latests CGI kids film

Now they're usually very good, the guilty pleasure is how I go about it!

For clearly kids movies love, How to Tame your Dragon and the original Disney Alice in Wonderland, which probably does count.

For more grown up films, I admit I rather like Jingle All the Way as a silly Christmas film and True Lies or The Last Action Hero as absolutely ridiculous but still amusing action films.

They all star Arnie. This isn't a coincidence.

Oh and let's not forget Starship Troopers! For it's over the top machismo.

What a terrible insult to golden retrievers.

Independence Day: I don't care what anyone says. Every time I see this movie I remember being five years old, seeing this in theaters, and absolutely FLIPPING OUT at the pure awesomeness of the whole thing.
You were five? I had just graduated from high school, let's see... 13 years earlier.

Some days I can't believe 1990 was 21 years ago. Seems like just yesterday we considered that "way in the future."

See, now Terra has the idea. This is the very definition of a guilty pleasure: one of the worst movies ever made, which actually has congealed stupidity stuck to the walls of its set. A movie which manages to get both physics *and* metaphysics wrong. Liking Event Horizon is the intellectual equivalent of enjoying a root canal without anesthesia. Guilty pleasure, you're doing it right.

I would agree with this as well.

Two films I'd put in that category, for me, would be The Red Shoes and White Christmas for certain.

But let's just say, what I view as a "Guilty Pleasure" are films I enjoy that others may or may not or one reason or another and, if offered, I'd sit and watch with no problems. Bear in mind, I might recite lines and/or make comments in the film while watching it. But that's me...

So, My "Guilty Pleasures":
The Red Shoes
White Christmas
Clue
The Princess Bride
Rock & Rule
The Fifth Element
The Hunt for Red October
2010
Krull
Batman (1989)
Batman Begins
Project A-Ko
Smokey and the Bandit
M*A*S*H
Beauty and the Beast
Star Trek: Insurrection
Twister
The Dirty Dozen
Dick Tracy

These are what come right to mind, for me, at least.

Thank you for the time...

See, I like Event Horizon because it pretty much is the equivalent of space travel ala Warhammer 40k. One merely looks at the method of travel that they do, and can very easily visualize that subspace/lower plane as being the Warp...and the resulting problems with travelling in the Warp without a Geller Field.
