Folks,

The snarky comments regarding NCsoft's motivation for donating to those in need are not needed, nor will they be permitted within this thread. When an organization makes a contribution to help with a crisis, it is common practice to state the amount of the donation, up to and including governments.

Please, take a moment to consider your words before you post them and ask if they're adding to the Community or detracting from it.

Thanks

- Z

Here here! I for one think NCSoft have done a fantastic thing here, and it should only be seen in the spirit of which it was given, to help the victims of last Friday's disaster.

I hope that with the generous aid of nations, groups, companies and individuals, Japan will not only rise out of this stronger, but be able to share their expertise in how to deal with these sorts of natural events and disasters to other countries, especially those on the Pacific Ring of Fire.

With generous donations like this and the countless others, that hope can become closer to realization.

Turgenev said it best, so I'll defer to his post.

I've played, and at least tried, most of the games NCSoft has brought to America. I've been a CoH subscriber (with some short lapses) since the beginning, and I've been a Guild Wars player since the beginning. I've pretty much always been a satisfied customer.

Today, I am proud to say that I am a customer of NCSoft. Especially given that the financial support to the relief efforts in Japan has been far less than similar recent occurences in Third World countries because people tend to feel that Japan is wealthy and not "in need".

I can only look at the photos and videos of the miles of tsunami-ravaged coast and think that nobody, no matter how wealthy their economy normally, is equipped to deal with something like this.

Bravo for a commitment to your neighbors and for your generosity.

Thank you, NCSoft, for showing that gamers and gaming companies can be of help in a time like this. Since I've subbed to CoH for the last 7 years, I can feel like some of that money is now going to help out Japan.

The only reason Turg doesn't win the thread is that NCSoft won it in the first post.

Very classy, team. This is what the internet is for.

Also: Six years of casual play begins to look an awful lot like one year of hardcore play.

City of Heroes...it turns out to be more than just a name. NCSoft stepped up to the plate on this one, and I am proud to be a member of this wonderful gaming community.

I'm not entirely clear on what the bit about maintaining the service with minimal electricity usage actually refers to but this donation is so vastly higher than any donation that is normally gifted by commercial organisations that it is staggering in its generosity and NCSoft, its staff, management, customers and shareholders should be justly proud of this action - Well done - you put most if not all of us to shame.

As I posted on COH's Facebook page, this makes me very happy to be an NCSoft customer. I especially appreciate the links above since, by providing them, its easier for me to make suggestions to people about where to donate. By providing direct ways to donate, we can help others to do so and hopefully prevent them from getting caught in a scam trying to look like a chance to help.

Sickening to think about, I know, but that's the world we live in.

Anyhow - to everyone at NCSoft: Mahalo nui loa! Domo arigato gozaimas! Gamsahamnida! Mauururu maita'i! Mucho gracias! Salamat! I've got friends here from Japan with friends and family over there, and its hard on them because they can't be there for them. I've got distant relatives in Japan and Okinawa. The state of Hawai'i in general is full of issei (first generation to arrive here), nissei (second generation), sansei (third generation) and more of folks with Japanese friends and family (both blood and extended 'ohana). If I could give all of you a hug, I would!

edit: Posted this on another forum I go to in our COH thread... hopefully this will help inspire more folks to donate

You know, frankly, and this is not saying anything negative -- quite the opposite -- relations between Korea and Japan haven't always been cordial. That makes this support for the people of Japan even more touching.

NC Soft is showing leadership, compassion, and a touch of class.

This news made my day. Thank you for your genuinely honorable actions, NC. I'm glad to be a part of it, and my resolve to remain a longtime subscriber well into the future has strengthened several-fold.

For anyone else, if you are able - donate to the Red Cross and keep adding strength to our collective helping hand. May the people of Japan stay strong.

Without going into any detail, you're quite right. I had forgotten that unfortunate piece of history. I know that there is, in fact, still a great deal of animosity between the two cultures. This is very touching.

There are no words for what this community, and the friends I have made here mean to me. Please know that I care for all of you, yes, even you. If you Twitter, I'm MrThan. Yep. Hopefully this'll be another step towards the two countries eventually reconciling and living amicably as good neighbors

Let me also say, that we as a humanity are in this together. *hugs*

Japan is under electrical power rationing and many areas have rolling blackouts to maintain electrical power. Between that and the other disruptions in the country, some online gaming facilities and data centers in Japan have chosen to shut down completely in light of this. NC Japan is stating that they are going to continue operating their Japanese data centers, but at reduced electrical power and with reduced staffing, in order to continue to provide services to their customers.

Thanks for the clarification and I'd again like to make it clear that we should all be proud to be associated with a company prepared to show such a huge level of generosity. There are other areas I have experienced where they have shown generosity albeit not to the same extent where it was not required or expected in the past and I am sure they will continue to do so.

This is a real beautiful action in your part. I'M glad to be a customer of such a great company that not only make good games, a company who help the needed in such a horrible moment. Thank you so much for this wonderful act of generosity and I can't be more proud of you.

Thank you for the wonderful service you have bring us in all of this years. Now there is a reason to be more loyal than ever to you.

Thanks, Z, I 100% agree. Delete the snark. A few hundred grand could have arguably been "lip service" for self-serving reasons, but a donation in the multi-millions, in my humble opinion, clearly shows that the employees at NCsoft all the way up to top-level management are extremely concerned and caring about their neighbors. I suspect that these two cultures feel a spirit of kinship that transcends political or ideological differences, being adjacent pockets of freedom surrounded by Communist China, North Korea, and Russia. To question the motives behind such incredible generosity says more about the questioner than the donation.

The thing that impresses me, aside from the massive size of the donation, is that they are also taking the opportunity of this announcement to publicize organizations and publish links to how we as individuals can make a difference as well. Also, they're spreading the news through the game's web sites (for example, your post here) to players who already subscribe to the game. To me, this says that they don't just want to be good world citizens, but they are encouraging us to be good world citizens also.

I hope all of our players will spread the word about this news release. Not in the spirit of, "Our game is better than your game!", but in the spirit of, "If a gaming company is willing to go to this extent, won't you please consider donating at least a little bit if you have it to spare?" And, of course, if you are able, to donate to one or more of the worthwhile organizations listed.
