What was your favorite thing about pre-I13 PvP?

I'm gonna chime in on the diversity factor. Secondary powers and buff powers are pretty useless now. My guess is thats what really has cleared pvp from many of the servers with a couple exceptions.

Unrelated- thanks for the open bar at meet and greet. Did you know i was comming? I'll be prepared to drill you about pvp at todays lecture 8D

Simple -- my powers worked pretty much the same as they did in PvE.
That sums it up for me.

Different builds worked.

The irony of i13 is it made things far more cookie cutter than before. I go outside the box, heck sometimes I can't even find the box. i13 makes it way harder to succeed at any level of competition with non-standard builds.

Infinity and Victory mostly
dUmb, etc.
lolz PvP anymore, Market PvP for fun and profit

I didn't know costume contests were that competitive. My bad.

The following thoughts are not my own. They are forwarded, unedited, from a friend of mine who quit City of Heroes over the Issue 13 changes. She still keeps her eye on the game, waiting for the opportunity to renew it and her passion for Super-Powered PvP. Her words are as follows:

Quote:
Free movement.

I loved soaring through the air with Super Jump and turning on a dime to maneuver, buff and attack. Plenty of super-warriors enjoyed bamfing around with Teleport. Super movement is INTEGRAL to the super-powered genre and the once-great PVP of its leading MMO. It's also very very important to minigames and running fights in the zone. Castle's fretting ("but ppl will run away liek cowards") doesn't hold water when there is an objective to fight over and people actually PLAY a zone minigame. Set piece combats like Arena matches are more fun with free movement too, and you can't really run away.

There was a LOT that was wrong with i13 and many other bad changes, but Travel Suppression was the deal killer. At a very minimum i13 could have shipped with one zone (not BB) still using the old rules, like the Arena options. This would have allowed people to vote with their feet, or perhaps their jetpacks. (ps but going farther than the arena system, keeping the old mez system as well.)

The PVP community suggested a slowed-down "training wheels" PVP learning area several years ago. I was aghast to see Castle implement mandatory training wheels all the time for everyone everywhere.

I won't mention diversity since it has been said many times already and pretty much speaks for itself by now.

So instead I will say my favorite thing, and the thing I probably miss the most, was that the secondary effects of powers actually meant something. Powers were chosen as much for their secondary effects as they were for damage. Now it's not even really a consideration since your just going to pick the power that does the most damage.

the single most significant aspect of PvP pre-i13 was that it wasn't PvP after i13...

These questions are insulting.

Free movement and diversity have already been mentioned so my favorite thing was acessibility(sp?).
People who said it was so hard to get into didn't really try, they probably stepped into a zone once and get pooped on then never returned.
I did it on some riggedy pve builds(ill/storm and spines/will scrapper mostly). I didn't do too well but i sure as hell had more fun in zones than now. I could grab a tray of inspirations and just enjoy the thrill of chasing down targets, getting chased and having to position correctly and trying to jump cancel and switcing between cj and sj and hopefully get a cancel off.
Now everything is travel suppressed and heal decayed and thats not that fun.

As a lot of people have mentioned before, I enjoyed the high paced action, diversity in builds, and that your powers worked how you expected them to work.

HD killed the enjoyment of playing a buffing/healing role.

TS killed the high paced action. It feels like your playing with lag ALL the time now, not just when you have bad internet.

Global Resist (along with DR to a great extent) killed the role of buffing.

DR... lots of things wrong with the curve of how things are DRed. Thats a whole nother bag of blind cats.

Was going to write out a well thought out response, but this does not need one.

Alot of the people here agree that fast pace and build diversity is a good thing. In my opinion post i13 seems to limit that.

I agree with what Firi and others wrote, not much more to say.

Another way of putting it, PvP rules made sense.

"Oh hey this cold corruptor just beat me. Why? hmmm well he hit me with infrigidate, benumb, and then held me and then I got hit with heatloss. My recharge was at like negative 300% and I couldn't do anything. That makes sense, he's able to debuff my recharge and make all of the secondary effects of my powers be a lot less powerful. Maybe instead of using a toon so dependent on hold/recharge (controller/dominator) I should try something else. Or maybe I can use a different strategy and put more pressure on him with damage, perhaps an SR scrapper with high defense."

I13PvP - lolrules and lol powers. JUST SPAM DAMAGE. MOAR SHARKS, FOSSILIZE, CONCENTRATED STRIKE!!! GO GO GO!!!

"Forget using powers like energy transfer and total focus. I'll just spam Sharks from Hide which does more damage than ET and TF. Even though ET and TF are powers from my PRIMARY and Sharks is just a PATRON power. Oh and when I get bored of that, I'll switch to my Kinetic Melee scrapper and just spam Concentrated Strike, which does just as much damage as Assassin's strike. I won't bother with any other powers cause CS does the most damage. When that gets tiresome, I'll jump on my SS/Fire Tanker, and throw fossilize/stone prison which do more damage than Super Strength + Rage."
I find myself in total agreement about what I liked best.

Back before the changes, I used to love Sirens Call's hot spots, Leading a Team of NPC's and being the focal point of the battle was onlike anything else in the game.
Farming the Turrets in RV and fighting off other players while doing so also occupied many enjoyable hours.
If I had my way, the Game would just revert the PvP rules to the current PvE system, sure, one on one battle, might be very unbalanced in some match-ups , but, like in the comics, Black Panther isn't gonna beat Thor.

Everyone has said everything already. Seeing a team with sonics and bubblers and therms and kins and mix them all up. Sure, you still had your cookie cutter teams, but there was more to them. Now it's the same three teams and you're lucky to see 3 or 4 different kind of characters.

Bottom line.. it used to be more fun. The only time I find it enjoyable anymore is in Arena with options selected to make it as close to pre i13 as possible.

My favorite thing about pre-i13 pvp was everything but the taunt changes and being able to phase and kill a phased player.

basically, those are the changes I like.

You know, I resubbed my account just to post in this topic. I had a 30 day card I got for christmas sitting around collecting dust so I figured I'd use it and post here.

Now, what do I miss most about pre i13 pvp? Well, first thing that came to mind was in game friends. I lost about a dozen when i13 hit beta.

The second was the intensity.

I loved playing my blaster knowing I could lay someone to rest in a few seconds, but at the same time I could be taken down just as fast.

I loved getting on my tank and annoying the crap out of people. I could take on groups at a time but I didn't do much damage. You know, how a tank should work.

I loved getting on my fire rad troller stacking char for holds and being able to use my debuffs without having to toggle them back on every 3 seconds.

I loved when sirens call was always packed with people pvping, not 6 dudes sitting in a corner smashing their faces on the keyboard.

I loved...

You know what, thats what I lost when i13 hit, my love for this game. Thats what I miss the most. PvP is what kept me subbed. When issue 13 dropped my love for this game went with it. Its to the point where I'm not willing to pay for a sub anymore.

I know at least 6 people that would resubscribe in a heart beat if pvp was reverted back to pre i13, with me being one of them. I miss this game, I really do. But with pvp in its current state I would never re sub no matter how much PvE content they added, unless it was a christmas gift...

Now I know this will probably lead nowhere, kind of like the PvP suggestion thread, but I figured it was worth the time card to come post this if there was even a slim chance PvP would get looked at. Please give PvP some love, its been far too long since it was left to rot.

Kinda stinks atleast Z came by and said he was still looking at the thread. Oh well.

If anyone actually had hope that was spurred by this or other similar threads; that's unfortunate. Nothing is going to change. They asked for and were given feedback with i13 was being implemented anyway. Resounding no, canceled subs, but they pushed on.

I guess it's somewhat understandable, since even in beta phase, development takes money, but what's shockingly stupid is that they just let it go on that way, even after it effectively killed competitive PvP.

If you're not giving your customers what they want, they'll eventually leave. It's just sad it's taken this long for some. Nostalgia and friends would be the only bit of glue left at this point if you're not particularly interested in PvE.

There are no plans to make changes. As past developers have said "there just isn't enough interest in PvP to warrant the time it would take to fix PvP."

It's a bit insulting that they would send a mod in here to feign interest when there are pages, upon pages of discussions about this very topic, stickied at the very top of the PvP Question and Build section of these threads...
