Mag 8.9 Sendai Earthquake

My heart goes out to anyone in or with loved ones in Japan or the immediate surroundings.

Google has set up a people finder if you are missing a loved one: link
Google crisis response landing page: link
USTREAM live feed of NHK television broadcast: (Japanese) (English)

An awesome link I just found: tri-view

This is three ustream live feeds:
NHK Japanese (Left)
NHK World (English) (Middle)
YokosoNews (a guy broadcasting Japanese news and translating it) (Right) -- Occasionally YokosoNews goes quiet as he gathers new story details.

If you know of any other good links, please respond and I'll add them up here in the top post.

Parts of Japan are pretty much completely destroyed. People are in serious danger. If you are capable, Japan really needs your help right now. If you can't go there bodily to assist, consider donating to your favorite disaster relief fund. If you cannot afford to donate, please spread the word as far and wide as you can.

The world isn't so big that you - YOU, READING THIS...YES, YOU - cannot help a country in need. A GLOBAL response is needed.

In the US (participating carriers), you can text REDCROSS to 90999 to donate $10 to the Red Cross (to use as they see fit, initially all money goes toward the Sendai earthquake relief, but any excess will go wherever Red Cross chooses). Alternately, anyone in the world can go to their website and donate specifically to their Japan Earthquake and Pacific Tsunami fund. link

The Japan Society, an American nonprofit, has an online donation option for their earthquake relief fund: link

For the British who wish to help, the Disaster Emergency Committee: link

My brother is in the Northern area of Japan. He arrived in Japan a day before this disaster shut down the airports. I've been talking to him on Skype, and his Internet is not so good right now but he is doing fine. Nothing major in his area happening. Thank goodness.

I've been following the story through the night on Twitter and the web. I keep expecting Godzilla to show up.

EDIT:

I realize now this may appear more insensitive than I intended it. I do not mean to make light of the tragedy. In fact, I have done what I can to donate to the relief efforts. Likewise, my prayers go out to all those affected by these events.

I simply spoke what came to mind when I saw "Mag 8.9" and "Earthquake" on a City of Heroes forum.

Worst part about this? My first thought was "Well with mag that high, they'll just get knocked right out of the AoE and be fine."

I was watching raw videos of the tsunamis and couldn't believe my eyes.

I just hope that the nuclear reactors that were shutdown haven't been damaged, that is the last thing the Japanese need on top of this disaster.

I am taking my sig to MWO and MWT. Let them wonder what it means.

It's pretty horrendous, I have to say.

The tsunami warning is stretching as far as Hawaii and will even make the west coast of America with waves of up to seven feet in height. That's the problem with these things, they maintain and in some cases can magnify their energy as they travel across the water.

The disasters in my home country of Australia, then Christchurch's earthquake, now here...I'm wondering when I can book a flight to Paragon. It somehow feels a bit safer than here right now.

I just saw the mention about the reactors. They've been able to shut them down (leaves four and a half million without power) but there's also a major oil refinery field on fire right now too....I don't think we have a true clue as to the size of this yet, but the tsunami waves...I honestly have trouble concieving the scale of it.

Hey all,

((takes off his Community Manager hat))

Speaking as a Japanese American, I'm sending all of my good thoughts and well wishes to anyone who has been effected by this. In case you're not aware, the Red Cross has a text donation option where you can text REDCROSS to 90999 and donate $10.00. If you don't feel comfortable doing that you can always go to the Red Cross donation page and contribute that way.

((puts back on Community Manager hat))

Thanks to everyone for continuing to remain sensitive to this tragedy and not making posts that would be considered inappropriate or insensitive. Times such as this are great opportunities for us to show our support as a Community.

Thanks!

Tokyo always felt like a second home to me. I am just overwhelmed by the scale of devastation, and the tragedy facing such a warm and generous people. All my family members have checked in so far, but one of my special CoX friends up in Sapporo still remains unaccounted for.

I have nothing but affection and compassion for everyone affected by this epic tragedy.

There are no words for what this community, and the friends I have made here mean to me. Please know that I care for all of you, yes, even you. If you Twitter, I'm MrThan. If you're Unleashed, I'm dumps. I'll try and get registered on the Titan Forums as well. Peace, and thanks for the best nine years anyone could ever ask for.

Yeah... massive is a good word for this. As well as devastating.
I have some family currently in multiple areas nearby (just vacationers and ex-pats). My brother seems to be fine (I don't think it's headed in his direction, nor a problem in the specific geographic location he's in... but I contacted him as this started last night).

The footage of the damage and of the tsunami, indeed, have been... (finding it hard to grasp suitable words)... insane/terrifying/massive/incredible/tragic.

That water on its own is tremendously powerful (no duh), but it's not just water with all of that debris (including cars, boats, trucks, etc).

Anyway... some great words in this thread already. Thank you for the links.
And I agree with Oz... Paragon City sounds good right about now.

Best wishes to everyone.

I pray to God for the safety of everyone effected by this quake, and for the families of all those that have died or gone missing.

I've been watching this on CNN all day, and it is amazing and sad. I've never been to Japan, but I've always adored the country and it's rich history. I only hope that the death toll doesn't get much higher. It's too high already.

Having been caught in the recent Christchurch earthquakes I can't imagine the devastating effect these events are having on Japan and her people. My thoughts are with those who are in Japan or have friends and family there.

My thoughts and well-wishes go out to the people in Japan and elsewhere affected by this earthquake.

And...wow, giant whirlpool!

I think the President said we have an "unshakable relationship with Japan" in a news conference about the quake and assistance.

I'm hoping my old penfriend Hitomi is alright, and I wish luck to the countries efforts to not only deal with an Earthquake and a Tsunami, but the trouble at the Fukushima-Daiichi reactor as well.

(ETA: And even more luck for dealing with the Fukushima-Daini reactor problems.)
