Such a thing as Anti-altitis?

So for as long as I have remembered, I've been an altaholic. It seemed I wouldnt get more than maybe 30 levels in when I'd see someone zip on buy with a combo I haven't tried and I'd be all "OOH! Shiny!" and there I am, lvl 1 in Atlas LF sewers team. I've tried pretty much all of the combos I've liked seeing on others, all ATs. And so that carried on till I had all my character slots filled with toons ranging from 30 to 50. Then something happened. I found a character that just....clicked. It was my Ill/Rad. It just seemed like the best fit for my playstyle. So I started with SOs and liked it quite a bit. Then I started reading up on the forums about this amazing "Perma PA" thing. So I thought, "I've never been uber before....may as well try" that and obliterations for shield scrappers were costing your first born child at the time. (this was about a year and a half ago). I put the time in to get the build put together and respecced and respecced and finally got a character I was really proud of. So the Altaholic in me thought "Well, thats one done. I wonder how hard it would be to deck out a tanker...hrm.." But I started to realize as I would level each new pet project, that I could only do it for a couple hours and then feel a need to log back onto that Ill/Rad for some real superhero time. After a while, I started caring less and less about pet projects, even less so about min/max IO builds on anything but my Ill/Rad. At this point I've been looking at my list of other toons with a confused look on my face. "Why would I even play these other guys?" The Incarnate content has just made this feeling stronger as he comes close to crafting his very rare.
So the question is, has anyone else had this feeling? Like you have a character you like so much, that it can snuff out even the strongest Altitis? I find myself comparing every urge to make a new toon to the one I'm using and just give up on the idea entirely. It won't just match my playstyle nearly as well.

I guess I could fit into that category.

I love playing my 50's, and I only have a few characters I play regularly(all IO'd out 50's). If I create a character it is because I plan on getting it to 50, get the accolades, and get him all IO'd up.

I used to have Altitis, but I guess I got over it and then some.

A buddy of mine has only two characters on his account and has been playing for over 3 years. All servers combined, two characters total.

No plans to make a new one either.

I can be found, outside of paragon city here.
Thank you everyone at Paragon and on Virtue. When the lights go out in November, you'll find me on Razor Bunny.

Thats just crazy! I wish I had that kind of dedication to a toon. I'm getting there, since I really dont enjoy any other toons anymore since finishing my Ill/Rad. But wow. 2 characters. They must be pretty awesome by now.

It's been a while but our supergroup had a Dark/electric level 50 that he deleted... so he could roll a dark/electric to run through the content... again. He didn't want more than one character.

Golden Girl only has one character AFAIK. When Philotic Knight/Westley was here, he would create his Philotic Knight character, get to 50, and then delete the character and start over. I think he played on more than one server, so had multiple copies of PK, but it's basically a single character.

I sort of fall in between. I've played for a long time, I've tried out a lot of power combos, but also have plenty of things I've never, ever touched (I just got my first dom to 50 a few weeks ago!).

I make a lot of characters, but it's with the goal of finding something I'm happy to run as a main. So I guess it's alt-itis that will eventually result in a bunch of untouched 50s and 1-2 focused on characters. I've gone through 3 accounts (this being the third), so only have a couple 50s now.

If I ever find the Holy Grail in terms of a character who I want to focus on, anyway. Trying to strike a good balance in damage, both ST and AOE, and 'I can survive whatever'.

This is correct

But I'm cloned across the servers, so I have multiple 50s, but just one avatar, as they're all identical

I have quite a few toons made with some (what I consider) cool concepts and powerset combos but I have been restricted to only playing a couple.

It started with badging and IO's, and has been made worse by the Incarnate stuff. I only have limited time to play so in order to work towards getting all IO's for those couple builds, trying to get as many badges as I can on my badger and keep up withe the incarnate arcs I tend to log in on those two toons find something that fills those compulsions and find that my other toons have fallen by the way side.

Once I get my secondary toon IO'd out i may switch to IO'ing one of my other 50's or try leveling a lowbie but due to time constraints i think I will always only have my main and one other on the go at any given time.

I think I have it down to where I can pick a fav combo for any AT, so I could limit myself to just those. Too bad it took playing 40+ characters to figure that out. If CoH 2 was made, I would make a lot less characters. I really don't role alts in other games either. I simply make a character, and get them maxed out as much as possible.

Sometimes me namesake character, Dante, a D3 Defender, is like that. I played for three years with no 50s, always flicking from one idea to the next. Hell, before I had a stable SG, I had never got a character over level 20!

My problem is that I like to do a little bit of everything. I like to blast, scrap, control and debuff, preferably all at the same time. You'd think Kheldians would be right up my street but I only have two, both stuck in their mid 30s.

Dante was the first character that I decided 'right, I'm getting my 50' on and I made myself play him, even when I didn't feel like it. Fortunately, once I got over the 30s hurdle, there were plenty of high level teams that welcomed the awesomeness that a Dark/Dark/Dark Defender can bring them and I still love taking him out on big teams as he becomes the barbeque sauce to their steak, making good teams great. I can control, blast and debuff the hell out of most mobs with impunity and it feels great.

Since the Alpha Slot allowed me to slot a Cardiac and the introduction of Inherent Fitness, he's improved even more so, allowing me to get Leadership into his build. Also, a build that gives him great Defence to go with the -ToHit and a 50% damage bonus before the 30% solo bonus means he can solo very effectively. This doesn't mean I don't alt (hell, look at my signature!) and not a day goes by when I don't think of a new character concept but at least now I can say I've got a 'main' that is a reliable addition to any team.

As for people more dedicated than me, I have known some roleplayers that only play one character. Even when they have alted, they've abandoned them after only a little time, preferring to go back to their main. Also, I know a few people, including myself who use different powersets for the same character. So if I fancy scrapping, I have a Katana/Dark version of my main with the same costume and bio (although you could call this cheating).

I do, I don't have many alts....

my first 50 was my blaster, who is now an alt and not my main.

I do have a lvl 50 brute and my defender is almost level 50.

but my widow is the only character I routinely play on.

Magisterum- 50+3 Fortunata--Virtue

Lukerion- 33 Emp/Rad Defender--Virtue
Noah Heartily- 34 SS/SD brute- Virtue
Mika Heartily- 50+1 Fire/MM blaster-Virtue

For me it was my Bots/FF mastermind, which was my first 50.

Then the Widow and the Fort (two seperate toons, not one with two builds). The Widow hit 40 a while ago but now I'm playing the Fort more. She just made 41 yesterday.

Yup, try enough stuff and you'll find something that just "clicks" for you.

I've had two toons that "clicked" for me enough to take them up to 50. I never play them anymore, except to test AE arcs with. I keep hoping I'll create a new toon and click with it, but so far, nada.

But I do have a lot of good toons in the 30s, so whenever I feel like tanking or stalkering or something, I'm usually good to go.

That is an interesting idea I never thought of... Using multiple characters to conceptually increase the abilities of one "person"

I have two 50's at the moment. Fire/Storm controller and a PB.

A good portion of my time goes to Zep, my fire/storm. I have maybe five others that get some regular attention, Like my PB. When I am in a mood or feel like something different I'll go find one of my many alts and get a few levels. I've got three or four in their 40's now. They'll start needing at least a common Alpha soon.

my main will always be my ninja/dark mm since hes also my badge toon

but out of my other 35 toons, i have about 4 or so toons which are really awesome that i like

my ill/cold is an awesome tough target killer

my earth/fire dom is an awesome crowd control and massive dmg output

and my dark/stone brute can tank just about anything

I do this a lot... and I blame it on Smersh. But they tend to be characters that I love RPing.

Every alt I create has the ultimate goal of being that one character that I just can't let go of. Usually this ends up leaving me playing one character exclusively for a few months, only to drop it for another character which I will play exclusively for a few months without looking back.

A good character for me needs a balance between min/maxing stats, theme, and enjoyment. Which means the magic combo doesn't come together as often as I'd like. I'm picky. =D

Edit: forgot to say what I'm playing now! SS/Fire/Pyre brute! I know it is something of a FotM build, which I don't like, but hey it is fun! Before that it was my DP/Kin corrupter.

I have tons of toons and many 50s spread throughout the servers, but since Going Rogue came out, I've been doing most of the new content with one toon. The rest of the 50s get some attention rarely, and my lower toons get almost no playtime since the Incarnate stuff came about. I've even begun accolade hunting on my main, ninja/dark mastermind, and that's something that I've never done before. It's kind of a pain to imagine getting all my 50s their weekly Notice of the Well, and I have been trying to do so, but it's more trouble than it's worth. So, after I get bored playing on my main, then I'll play with something else. But it's been awhile since that's happened. So, I've been hit with a case of anti-altitis as well.

I have a dreaded case of both. I only have one 50, who I am very attached to, but I have a gazillion other alts that are all below level 20.

I share your pain. Although I have managed to get a couple of other characters up over 20, they pale to the number of low-level alts I have running around, and are pretty much "parked" at 41 and 30 due to lack of play time. I seem to be able to stick with a character for just long enough to miss my Fire/Fire Tanker, then play her for just long enough to have another awesome idea for an alt.

Before going rogue, Zep, my fire storm controller was mostly for making money to improve other characters. He farms so quickly and easily. Now that I can improve him again (other then by spending several billion INF) he gets more play time. When I need drops I do missions at 0/8 no bosses and mow things down.

I am working on getting shards also for my PB. His Tri-form build is decently IO's, his human only form is still mostly SO's.

Hmm, My lvl 40 fire/fire blaster is awesome on teams but doesn't solo super well.
Storm/Electric defender (40) has some procs and hurricane is IO's out. He can solo for days easily. I have some trouble with him teaming just because people expect that I will run into melee and fling mobs around, rather then stay in the back for the most part and debuff/heal/zot. I am very much enjoying my lvl 30 elec/elec dominator. Need to work him up some more he has some nice potential (get it? I like that he plays so different then other characters I have. Hmm thats my 'mains' on Virtue. For red side I play on Infinity. I have three main villains. Bots/FF MM (48 and likely to be my first 50 red side) my lvl 41 elec/elec stalker which I really like (though I fear hitting 50 and trying to get him IO sets). and 'Roots of Evil' my 30ish Plant/Thorn dominator.

So I guess I fail at not having alt-itis, right?

I have at least a dozen more alts, more blue side on Justice (since I ran out of room on virtue) though only two over lvl 20, a 25 dark/dark scrapper and a 46 Fire/Kin controller.

I made Excellerant, the fire/kin just to settle for myself the debate that raged one time about what controller build was strongest.

I think a big part of this Altitis cure has been that most of my high lvl alts I made for a specific purpose. Like my Shield/SS/Pyre tank, my Fire/kin/stone and Bots/Traps MM were all created to farm so I could have the inf to pimp out my other toons. Tho what I didnt realize was that when I focused on my Ill/rad, he eventually got that amazing build I had dreamed about. I was done, for the most part. And when I looked at the farm toons I created, I didnt see any point in using them anymore. Oh sure, I havent deleted them. Never know when they might be handy. But the process of perfecting a build (or as close to perfection as I can conceive based on mids and help from the amazing Local_man over on the controller forums) has left me disinterested in lvling another toon and just wanting to enjoy the heck out of the one Ive got. I can do literally anything with Griff Wonder, my Ill/Rad. At least, I can do anything I find interesting (cant farm with him. not well at least). So now I get to sit back. Enjoy the work I put into that one great toon. And experience the game itself.

Kinda happened with me. Once I got her to permadom levels, my Earth/Fire Dominator took the position of Just Plain Best in my roster of characters. Yeah, my Fire/Shield Scrapper has better AoE damage, and my Katana/Invuln Scrapper has better survivability, but she's close enough to them to make her an awesome jack-of-all-trades. Plus, I enjoy control and debuffs a lot more than passive defenses... I'm currently happy just focusing on buffing her up more, which is the first time I've played a character for more than a few hours past level 50.
