If you want something really fun, I suggest Ill/Rad. It fits well in any situation, is a lot of fun on teams as it always has something to contribute, and can solo extremely well. Nothing more fun than just hanging out with some buddies when all of a sudden you see the alert that a GM has spawned somewhere and you know, just know, that even if you have to go by yourself, you can take it. You could grab a buddy and have fun with it or solo it yourself for the challenge.

Thank you for bringing this up. So many people are IO set focused (myself included) it's a good reminder of what you can do with some common IOs.
-
While my undying love for Ill/Rad compels me to pimp my AT, and it can Solo extremely well and looks good doing it, I'm gonna have to (sigh) recommend Mind/Fire Perma Dom. If you have the inf, and it sounds like you do, then these lil buggers can solo the ITF, LRSF, etc. They can solo anything. At any lvl. It's just sick. I honestly can't think of anything these lil guys can do that isnt on par or better than anything another AT can do.
As much as recommending something other than Ill/Rad makes me wanna wash my mouth out with bleach, it's sadly a fact.
So there ya go. Give it a whirl.
(Oh. And don't go for Warshade. They look like Grimace and you don't want to do that to yourself. You have your self respect to think of.) -

Have you considered an Ill/Rad? I know that we get alot of grief for being a lil "overpowered", but it can be a ton of fun. Now with inherent fitness, you dont have to decide between a solo build and a team build, you can have both easily. You can team extremely well, bringing buffs, massive debuffs, controls, damage in the form of pets and a very decent single target attack chain (for a controller that is), a decent heal, and a rez. With minimal investment, you can have a very decent controller with several options that teams very well. With what some consider to be a more significant (it's not that bad compared to most scrapper or tank costs imo) expense, you can become a god and pimp slap Jack and Eochai at the same time while enjoying a nice bowl of Cheerios. Since you mentioned you like RP, there are several ways you could play that off. A buddy of mine rolls a technology Ill/Rad/Fire where he is a nuclear powered holographic android. It allows him the rationale to have 5 totally different forms for his costumes (all illusionary facades the droid puts on), generates illusions via Light and Gravity projections, Emits radiation from his core to debuff the enemy, and added flame projection modules to the body for attacks (fire mastery). Me personally I went with an Archmage theme, where the character was a lowly apprentice who could only manage two forms of magic when he started his career as a hero, Illusion and Entropy (my rationale for radiation, its entropy and decay, not radiation) and expanded his magical domains as he became more powerful. Now able to do Illusion, Entropy (Rad), Destruction (fire mastery), Portal magic (teleport pool), Time magic (speed pool for haste and lingering radiation for slow), Alteration magic (different forms from costumes) and Divine (my rad heal and rez). It plays off as a very powerful mage who is constantly putting himself out there to expand his knowledge fueled by remembering he was once a lowly apprentice who could only figure out two simple and not very effective forms of magic. I play that toon almost exclusively nowadays only alting for about 30 minutes before i get fed up and go back to my boy. On the plus side, if you go with Ill/Rad instead of say...I dunno...let's go with Warshade, you won't look like Grimace. Cuz that's gotta be embarrasing.

For sure, My shield/ss/pyre tank has MUCH better survivability and does more aoe damage and farms way better. But there's just something about the Ill/Rad that makes me smile. I can solo GMs/AVs, I can do any task force pretty easily, I contribute to any team situation very well. I'm currently set at 218.75% global recharge bonus before spiritual boost or the enhancements in the powers themselves so I can have all kinds of silly fun like Mutation recharging what seems like about every 30-40 seconds or so, then even better, my Rise of the Phoenix is a fast recharge. I can actually play recklessly when teamed with my close friend (not on pugs. that'd get me kicked) and act as self rezzing vengeance bait (with a nice lil nuke to boot when I rez). Mind you thats only when my friends want to just cut loose and play silly. But I love that about my main, I can do all those silly things. Thats what happens when I roll an alt. I start lvling it and realize that I'd rather just play that fun and finished character instead.
-
I think a big part of this Altitis cure has been that most of my high lvl alts I made for a specific purpose. Like my Shield/SS/Pyre tank, my Fire/kin/stone and Bots/Traps MM were all created to farm so I could have the inf to pimp out my other toons. Tho what I didnt realize was that when I focused on my Ill/rad, he eventually got that amazing build I had dreamed about. I was done, for the most part. And when I looked at the farm toons I created, I didnt see any point in using them anymore. Oh sure, I havent deleted them. Never know when they might be handy. But the process of perfecting a build (or as close to perfection as I can conceive based on mids and help from the amazing Local_man over on the controller forums) has left me disinterested in lvling another toon and just wanting to enjoy the heck out of the one Ive got. I can do literally anything with Griff Wonder, my Ill/Rad. At least, I can do anything I find interesting (cant farm with him. not well at least). So now I get to sit back. Enjoy the work I put into that one great toon. And experience the game itself.

Quote:Thats just crazy! I wish I had that kind of dedication to a toon. I'm getting there, since I really dont enjoy any other toons anymore since finishing my Ill/Rad. But wow. 2 characters. They must be pretty awesome by now.A buddy of mine has only two characters on his account and has been playing for over 3 years. All servers combined, two characters total.
No plans to make a new one either. -
So for as long as I have remembered, I've been an altaholic. It seemed I wouldnt get more than maybe 30 levels in when I'd see someone zip on buy with a combo I haven't tried and I'd be all "OOH! Shiny!" and there I am, lvl 1 in Atlas LF sewers team. I've tried pretty much all of the combos I've liked seeing on others, all ATs. And so that carried on till I had all my character slots filled with toons ranging from 30 to 50. Then something happened. I found a character that just....clicked. It was my Ill/Rad. It just seemed like the best fit for my playstyle. So I started with SOs and liked it quite a bit. Then I started reading up on the forums about this amazing "Perma PA" thing. So I thought, "I've never been uber before....may as well try" that and obliterations for shield scrappers were costing your first born child at the time. (this was about a year and a half ago). I put the time in to get the build put together and respecced and respecced and finally got a character I was really proud of. So the Altaholic in me thought "Well, thats one done. I wonder how hard it would be to deck out a tanker...hrm.." But I started to realize as I would level each new pet project, that I could only do it for a couple hours and then feel a need to log back onto that Ill/Rad for some real superhero time. After a while, I started caring less and less about pet projects, even less so about min/max IO builds on anything but my Ill/Rad. At this point I've been looking at my list of other toons with a confused look on my face. "Why would I even play these other guys?" The Incarnate content has just made this feeling stronger as he comes close to crafting his very rare.
So the question is, has anyone else had this feeling? Like you have a character you like so much, that it can snuff out even the strongest Altitis? I find myself comparing every urge to make a new toon to the one I'm using and just give up on the idea entirely. It won't just match my playstyle nearly as well. -
Ok. So, first of all, the Malta clearly posted a sign that there were cupcakes down that hallway. It's not my fault that I am so good and pure that I believed them. And as a follow up note, I would do it again.

Depends on what your goal is with this build. Might help in giving advice. If you are looking for a solo toon with Perma PA then I have some suggestions to make. If its general play with teams then this looks fine. What is your goal with this build?
-
Quote:I can go with some of that. But my question to you is that how many characters out there do you see that arent on par with the Ill/Rad? What about the vast majority of well built scrappers? Veats? Any of the amazing controller builds I've seen you post? Even Warshades? Heck even defenders can solo AVs and GMs nowadays with cold or traps. The people who are stressing about the STF this week are people who want their tier 3 or better alpha boost. People who care about that are probably also running builds on par with my Ill/rad if not better. (definitely better if we are talking fights against large groups of enemies which is a weak point for ill/rads). Do i want to see changes to AV behavior similar to GW, LR, and BM? For sure. Spice it up. But IMO saying that these challenges exist based on a few AT combos that are "overpowered" in a game where every AT is powerful (cept for maybe my poor poor PB...sigh) is wrong. My Ill/rad is no better than my wife's DM/SD scrapper, or my buddies Crab Spider, or any of those just plain sweet looking troller builds I've seen you post. And it's not cheesy to be just as good as everyone else.I highlighted a portion of your statement to draw attention to the main place we differ. Part of my issue with the STF and "challenge" in general is that these challenges feel built to deal with overpowered characters like the Ill/Rad you mentioned. I feel like if you want more challenge, it's already ready available in the dozens of combos that aren't among the best at minimizing the game's challenges. The reason the game feels so easy to you is the design of AVs severely penalizes some characters and greatly rewards others.
I do happen to like the Apex Task Force, but that's because it breaks the rules a little bit and lets a few different sets shine. IMO if they want to introduce more "challenge" they should find some way for AVs to get around the cheesiness of Illusion Control as a whole. -
Quote:So, and correct me if I'm wrong here since im a simple cubicle monkey and not a neuro-physiologist or whatever, but there are people out there who cannot enjoy something if there is a possibility of loss? So if it's only enjoyable if it's easy then how does anything in that kind of person's life have any worth? God, I feel sorry for them. Seriously. No sarcasm there. Just pity. One of the most enjoyable things I run into this game are intense situations like the STF or Apex TF. Where it isnt a foregone conclusion how the fight will turn out. I mostly run a perma PA ill/rad with a very respectable build and the vast majority of game content doesnt challenge me. I really enjoy running up on GW or LR with the knowledge that I very well may get my can handed to me. That it would make someone unhappy or ruin their game experience to possibly lose that single encounter when they steamroll 99% of the game content just doesnt make sense to me. But you said our brains work differently. I can accept that. And be grateful. Some of them, yes. Not all, by far, but as with anything that expresses preferences and philosophies, some are going to be extroverted, some introverted, and some neither. That one particular song happens to be written from a clear view-point of an extrovert. An introvert isn't going to be inspired by the song the same way an extrovert is, because our brains work differently.
We literally* do not get the same rushes that extroverts do. Our brains don't give us the same charge from excitement and thrill that yours do. We're different. You really need to get used to it.
*I actually mean literally here, not in the hyperbolic, metaphoric way people like to use literally. -

Since you are asking for general advice on storm, this thread which is from i10 is still relavent for the usage of storm. just keep in mind any builds involved would need to be updated to take into account inherent fitness. -
Quote:Lol. Just...Lol. This is actually one of the reasons my Huntsman build spider has placate. I duo with my wife the majority of the time on her scrappers and if she says something snarky while we are playing I'll pop placate to send the mob her way and cackle maniacly asking her why she's taking so much damage.Venge off Blaster.
Finish off tank smasher.
Give Blaster a wakie and tell him he needs to control his aggro better.Oh sure, it means a trip to the sofa for the evening. But it's worth it.

Another thing you could do is join Dech's weekly Purple Pride Parade after you meet up with Ronald and the Hamburgler for lunch.
(This message has been brought to you by the Bitter Peacbringer League and is not an attack on any posters here cept maybe dechs for being way more awesome than me.)
P.S. Dark armor still sucks. -
Soloing regular content I'd have to 2nd (or 3rd or 4th) the vote for Ill/rad controller. About the only thing my Ill/rad can't do is farm. While it has been noted that Ill/Rad is fantastic against hard targets and smaller groups, it can very well take care of larger groups of mobs. It's just more exciting. Against mobs at /x4 or lower Ill/rad is a cake walk. No real threats. However try it out at x8 and you really have to get active. Confusing trouble mobs, making sure spectral terror is located in a good spot, keeping PA out, actively locking down mobs with flash, blind, and confuse goes a long way in large groups and after a little bit of practice is not that troublesome. Try an Ill/rad out. Go to the controller forum and locate Local_man's guide for ill/rads. He has a ton of good info on leveling one and using the powers.
-
They still haven't added my powerset idea "Marital Mastery". A powerset that would allow a player to indefinitely avoid the most dangerous damage type in the game. "Wife Aggro".
-
Quote:Heh sorry Joe. Just going for the lolsCute. But you're being just a little unfair. With the exception of a bit of snarkiness on Dechs' part and more than a little from _Dawun_, the overall discussion - though passionate - has been on topic and focused on the overall points at hand (vise being focused on each other).
And no one has gotten personal. Well, no one had gotten personal until you implied that we're all slackers who post at work when we should be getting paid. Not everyone has the same work hours you know. (he says as he looks over his shoulder.)
Gotta go.. Actually I admit I am one of those slackers who posts when he should be working. At the time I posted that I was stuck at my desk in the office for 13 hours and was posting here more than I was doing paperwork. So it was more a self admonishment than an accusing of the player base. Tho it totally came across that way. I love this forum. And I really enjoy the contributions of everyone on it. So sorry if it sounded unfair or personal. Really. I like you guys alot.

Quote:Might have been better to say something likeFound the biggest problem with your build. Don't know how you could have missed it.
"Please note I'm not going to use any IO's. Too broke"
or
"Please note I'm not going to use any IO's. I'd like to see if it can be done with SOs"
or
"Please note I'm not going to use any IO's. Ninjas kidnapped the president and I'm a bad dude"
The first statement just makes people like the OP less. And that's sad. Cuz we should all like each other. Cept for Dechs. Cuz Warshades suck.
