I'm new to tanking but not the game. Ussually tank with a scrapper. So now I'm working on a tank. Trying to set my end goal. Would like you guys to look at my inv/km build and give any advice if i missed something. Going for capped typed defs, and as much res as possible. Damage will come from my wifes toon.

I think you can achieve your goal without having to get the Glad and without slotting any of your defense/resist sets with more then 4 slots. Hopefully making your attacks more helpful and efficient.

What I don't get is your putting the Miracle and Numina's Unique IOs in Aid other and Aid self. You're not going to get a continuous benefit from them unless you plan on clicking aid self/others every two minutes. Is there a particular reason for placing the Uniques there?

Actually was just looking for fillers, lol. I have the Gladiator and it helps a bit. As for dmg, its her turn to shine, my bs/wp kills before the group has a chance o do anything.

Here's a quick overhaul. Attacks are better-slotted, defenses are still softcapped, and I dropped RT - you really don't want to knock people out of Invincibility. I even snagged Conserve Power to make sure you don't have any major endurance problems.

EDIT EDIT: And just realied I forgot to swap out the Serendipity set in Tough Hide. You can shoose between four LotGs if you want more recharge and don't mind wasting the hit point bonus (you're HP capped with DP up), or four Gift of the Ancients for a cheaper set with great +recovery/+end bonuses.

Nice builds, they are bothgood. I kept repusing torrent as kind of an oh sh*t button, and to knock off any one on the blaster. Rangle, I'm partial to yours, it fits what I'm looking for and will I really miss 3.4 res?

I'm not going to comment on your build, as you've already got a few of the experts helping you out. I just want to throw a few thoughts at you with regards to tanking.

The tanker who is the last man standing has failed.

I cannot stress how important it is that you hold your aggro. I don't care how much you can survive, if the AV or the bosses are not attacking you, you're not tanking. I built a Dark Armor Tank that could survive the apocalypse, but I made sure before I got that far that he could keep the attention on him.

Now, I understand that there's little can be done to prevent outright stupidity on the part of your teammates. It's a crying shame to see a blaster tear down a hallway he can't handle. Let him go, he's got to learn somehow.

Lol, its usually the scrapper, wait, its usually me. But sometimes you just get in bad spots. Taunt helps, but my scrapper pulls agro from everybody. I've ended up taking taunt with my scrapper, willpower doesn't hold agro well.

Ok. So, first of all, the Malta clearly posted a sign that there were cupcakes down that hallway. It's not my fault that I am so good and pure that I believed them. And as a follow up note, I would do it again.

Really this cannot be overstated. Being a tanker isn't about standing there and not getting hurt, although that's certainly part of it. Tanking by definition is getting and holding the attention of the bad guys so they're shooting at you, not your team.

I always evaluate a tanker on the following criteria, in order:
  1. The tanker is the first into the mob (exception - extremely nasty group or AV when there's an Illusion controller on the team, then let Phantom Army take the alpha) and keeps as much of the mob's attention as possible on him. Any stray aggro going towards the squishies on the team is immediately dealt with.
  2. The tanker moves the team efficiently from group to group in a minimum of time and collects the mobs into a tight bunch for AOE's if possible.
  3. The tanker is durable enough to survive the attention.
  4. The tanker has enough damage output to contribute to the team's kill speed.
If a tanker can do all four of those then I consider that tanker player competent. If he can't or won't meet those criteria I consider him marginal at best, incompetent at worst. Attitude is the number one part of being a tanker; the "you're going to kill my teammate over my dead body" point of view. If you have the attitude then all the rest is simply technique, and attitude is what makes a tanker a Tank. It doesn't matter how tough a brick wall is if the castle gate is standing open. Likewise it doesn't matter how tough the tanker is if unchecked aggro is killing the rest of the team.

I consider it a failure on my part if any member of the team dies while I'm in the same room tanking (if they go off on their own then it's their lookout). I consider it a mistake and something I need to correct in my technique if any member of my team even gets aggro... I guess I'm something of a perfectionist in that I hold myself to a higher standard than I hold other tankers. I also rarely have a mission where I don't make some mistake that I notice even if nobody else does. I always think I could have gotten that aggro faster, or I could have gotten that loose mob faster or I could have grouped the mobs tighter.

Moving from being competent as a tanker to being a great one is a matter of practice, practice, practice. There's some days when everything's clicking and I consider myself in that realm and others when I'm making stupid errors and barely consider myself competent. As I said I'm my own worst critic; that's almost a requirement to move up to the next level.

Oh, the aggro cap annoys me so much.....

Big rooms, where the high-damage melee types scatter in all directions? Hate those when I'm tankin'.

The only semi-reliable way I've found to control that sort of mess is to beat the team in by a good margin and pull the back of the room forward, to be sure even the most blood-thirsty scrappers/brutes/crabs/widows/etc are well-sated by the horde at the entrance.

Also, there is no joy like an off-tank who knows what the hell they're doin'.

I found the best way to deal with these type of rooms is to rely on the control powers of your tank set. I run around keeping minions stunned with oppressive gloom, smacking bosses to keep their attention, and sleeping entire spawns with Salt Crystals (from the epic).

each room is different but i wont just whip into a room either. gotta be quick on your feet to make sure everyone keeps their fingers and toes at the end of the fight.


ill either pull or go in by myself. that way i know their safe until i can make it safer. but yeah some will never learn. worse case is scrappers.. they just love to go ahead of you.

Defeats don't count towards the aggro cap. If I've got a spawn of sixteen coming at me, I'll let the AoEs rip. Again, beating the team there can be a huge help, but if you can make sure that your seventeen aggroed enemies are all bosses or nasty LTs, the team is going to be pretty safe. Sure, adding another spawn on top of it might not be a great idea, but that's what you have Doms and Trollers for.

Also, nothing says "Kill stuff here" like a giant patch of purple flame. Burn really does seem to concentrate people's attention on wherever you drop it, IME.

And yeah, off-tanking is fun.
