Forget Spidey movie pix - here's New Venom

No foolin'. In the back of The Amazing Spider-Man 651 (which has the single most menacing last line of any Spidey comic *ever*) editor Stephen Wacker writes: "One thing both Rick, Dan and Tony have discussed with Venom is giving him more tricks than just being a bloodthirsty, tongue wagging blob of ultra strong alien goo. The new Venom is relying on new gadgets and tricks that rival Spidey's... though they're much deadlier." You can tell it was written by an editor and not a writer because he refers to *three* people by using the word "both." Clearly the guy's never heard of Strunk, Funk, White or Wagnall.

I looked at the pic and thought Frank Castle snagged a symbiote.

You have to be kidding, right?

yesh...

Maybe it's a good thing I'm not that much into comics anymore. It just doesn't come off right to me. But then again, I actually liked The Eddie Brock Venom. It was one of the few Characters Liefield could do well in the scope of his art talents.

Thank you for the time...

Actually, I (strangely) don't mind this take on Venom. Granted I hope it doesn't last too long, and they go back to monstrous Venom in the very near future, though.

Why would a bloodthirsty, tongue wagging blob of ultra strong alien goo need a pistol?

Why is Marvel so intent on destroying everything in Spiderman lore? I'm a DC man myself, but it's painful to watch Marvel do this to it's flagship characters universe. I feel bad for all the people that (still) read Spiderman.

I was thinking more Deadpool...although that would actually be a cool storyline...Wade with a symbiote

Considering that the black suit wasn't Venom-ous when Peter was wearing it, maybe it takes on aspects of the person's subconscious. That'd be a cool take on the character. I'm given to understand that this may not be the classic symbiote but a version weaponized by the government. (Not sure if "weaponized" is the right term when speaking of Venom.)

True but where to start? He has committed so many crimes against comics.

That's exactly what happens. It absorbs bits from its hosts.

Did Liefeld ever draw Venom? I can't recollect such an incidence. The character was created by Todd McFarlane of Spawn fame and had his appearance with the long tongue added overhauled by Erik Larsen of Savage Dragon fame, but I can't seem to find Liefeld's touch anywhere.

Regardless, Liefield has much to answer for. You could put that as a tagline in almost any thread talking about comic book art.

Oh holy crap, what the hell is that?? If I were to see that without any explanation, Venom would NOT be the first thing that comes to mind. It looks stupid.

A popular theory is that Flash Thompson is the guy in the suit. It wouldn't be entirely inappropriate, as Flash is a long-time Spidey character, and is now written as an Iraq war veteran that can't walk. Gaining the symbiote would (I guess) give him back use of his legs, and allow him to continue to serve his country. Plus, as much as I dig Venom - and I really dig Venom - it would be interesting to see the character as something other than just a hulking black mass of teeth and drool that eats brains.
