Yeah we're rich spoiled brats living off our parents because we don't spend money on:

Why did you have to provide proof that these people exist? You made my brain literally ache from reading that guy's lamentation.

$279/month on rent in California? And he pays for cleaning?! Unless you're living in some horrible backwater, that can't be anything more than a studio apartment. I can't imagine that it's more than a shed with a mailbox in San Diego.

His mentioned gambling is probably some online thing. Additionally, while not making the obvious comment about paying for porn, he probably gets it from...less than reputable sources. I imagine he's probably had a few stolen numbers over the years. Not justifying it, just trying to understand it.

Then the "new $1200 computer" and other factors... Gah. GRAGH. [Insert Godzilla-style roar.] It wouldn't be so bad if he weren't so self-righteous while providing self-implicating proof that he is clearly not making an effort to better his situation.

Hopefully never.

I used to fiddle with my back feet music for a black onyx. My entire room absorbed every echo. The music was . . . thud like. The music was . . . thud like. I usually played such things as rough-neck and thug. Opaque melodies that would bug most people. Music from the other side of the fence.

Without hard numbers, that's pretty meaningless. I'm just making up numbers here but let's say my profits are one million dollars a month. Then they drop to a thousand dollars a month. Then I find a way to triple my profits... now I have three thousand dollars a month! Success?

Well, certainly more successful than going bankrupt but a whole lot less successful than I set out to be. Without real numbers, you don't know where "We've tripled our profits" sits on the spectrum between "we've just stopped the hemorrhaging, are eking out a slim profit and won't have to shut down the servers" and "OMG this is so much more money than we ever dreamed of seeing".

I'm not sure why people are saying that with some of the Devs and forum mods leaving that this game is dying. Sure people have left in the past most notably Jack Emmert aka statesman, Cuppa Jo, ExLibris and many many others. Sure there have been layoffs before. But this game is still going and going strong and many many players are coming back due to free fitness pool and the Incarnate system.

Back to the point of people (NC Soft staff) and why. First is we for the most part won't know the real reason for a popular person leaving unless they go someplace else and let us know why they left here. Secondly and more important, people leave jobs that they love everyday for many reasons: health, better pay, advance their skill set, location, medical and on and on.

Don't for one minute think that this game or any game is heading downhill just because a few people leave a job in close proximity to each other. Wait until there is an official Doom announcement then cry wolf.

I think the original poster is a good example of a console gamer not being informed on just how expensive their console games are. I used to play console games regularly and didn't want to pay a subscription fee either. I tried CoH on a free trial and heard on chat channels about the previous content updates and some speculation about the upcoming Going Rogue. I actually think NCSoft should be blowing their own horn a lot more about this games constantly evolving content. When console gamers understand their 15$ is really buying tons of games and new ones are added all the time they're much more likely to subscribe. I know I was, and it was player chatter that sold me on it. Maybe the marketing department could really trumpet that accomplishment. Comparing the 50$ for every new thing or 15$ a month for constantly new and fun stuff to do is easy math for anyone.

There's a reason this game seems to be relatively slow to attract players (due to being ancient by MMO standards) but is really good at retaining them, the constant flow of new content keeps people hanging out for the next carrot.

Castle figured in a few years he could have retired sitting pretty. But then datamining showed that blasters were dying too quickly and not using fireball enough. The ones that were not dying had such high defiance buffs that they were one-shotting everything and not using fireball enough. So he reduced the damage buff of defiance, and made blasters partially mez-immune. This helped greatly, but then blasters starting doing so well that blasters were using hundreds of thousands of fireballs. Pretty soon NCSoft didn't even have enough money to pay BaB and had to let him go, much to his surprise. At that point Castle knew the game was up and by year's end the auditors would catch up with him. Knowing that his finances were being monitored he transferred his ill-gotten gains to an offshore account under the name of an accomplice. Castle would then leave Paragon Studios and his accomplice, citing new opportunities out of state, would leave California and meet up with him in Aruba a few weeks later where they would split all that perk pack money.
Then you can afford to send me a post-card from Aruba.

It'll probably go a year or so of paid, then switch to F2P once the playerbase realizes the game still had another six months of development and tweaking before release and start abandoning it in droves. The console market will make it more jumpy too, but...

Oh, wait, you meant COH, not the OTHER other game.

Almost seven years of paid access. I don't think that's gonna change anytime soon. We're the Everest of superhero games. MMOs come and go, but our mountain remains stubbornly in place. I don't think I'd want a F2P game anyway. I like a fixed payment plan, and getting stuff thrown in for free regularly.

I read that as the Everquest of superhero games (only one syllable off!) which may also be accurate, that game is STILL going.

The content being added right now doesn't seem like something that would mesh well with F2P. I think it will be at least two years, and only then if CoH takes a big hit in population numbers and can't recover.

All the newest TFs and other content all feel like something which encourages paid subscriptions, rather than micropayments. I saw Champions Online add stuff to their store for quite a while (nearly a year) before they went F2P. I assume any MMO game would be similar.

Free to play MMo's suck for one reason. All the idiots that play them. I will gladly put up my $15 to continue to play this game to keep out the serious A** Hats that a free game like Guild wars has ( though it's a neat game, i stopped playing it because of the A** hats)

If City of Heroes ever becomes free.. I will pack up all my costumes, dismiss my alts, and initiate the self destruct sequence on my base as i am flying out of Paragon.

Doubly meaningless because the article seems to conflate "profits" and "revenue" making it impossible to know which one was meant, if not something else entirely. I haven't listened to the podcast to know for certain which was originally stated.

My guess though is that its revenue not profits. That's definitely a good thing, but impossible to know how that affects profitability because it depends on their original operating costs verses their current ones, which aren't necessarily the same. In fact, if F2P attracted a lot of new players, the costs to operate the infrastructure necessary to support them almost certainly went up.
