Is Karl Urban the Law?

great casting.

it's *already* better than Stallone's monument to his own lack of talent.

I can't put all of the blame for the previous movie on Stallone.

There's the writers, the producers, Rob Schneider, whoever it was that capitulated to Stallone's ego about the helmet, whoever it was that missed the fact that Dredd's face has never been officially revealed and that all details of his facial appearance are dubious at best, Rob Schneider, the director, did I mention Rob Schneider?

What's funny is that I remember reading that Ahnold was offered the part and turned it down since he didn't want to wear the helmet all the time, yet somehow Stallone got away with it.

He looks great in the helmet. But that's not the point. The most important point is: Will he keep it on all the time?

If he doesn't then it's all over. End of story.

He did well as Bones in Star Trek. I'll give Mr. Urban the benefit of the doubt.

He has said before that he will.

“If anyone is familiar with Dredd, over the years there are many times when Dredd removes his helmet but you never fully see his face and that was construct by the creator, Mr. Wagner. He represents that faceless system of justice and law. I will say this, hypothetically if I went to a movie that was called “Judge Dredd” and the character or the actor who played Judge Dredd took the helmet and I would see his full face and features I would puke in my popcorn because that’s not Dredd. He’s mysterious and enigmatic. We’re going to do it right.”

It always helps if the actor is a big fan of the original work being adapted.

I liked the old Judge Dredd movie, mostly because Armand Assante was so over the top...

But this could not suck too.

There was some minor entertainment value to the first Dredd movie.....extremely minor. I suspect this one will be a vast improvement.

Their weapons have an effective lethal range of 300 meters! We're 400 meters! So why are you down there?

I know nothing about Dread aside from the Stallone movie, which, while bad, was still fun (though the end got disturbing if I recall, haven't seen it in a long time).

This is pretty much all you need to know about Judge Dredd:

Statesmonkey Sez: Lighten up! It's a game, for Lincoln's sake!
Also: Six years of casual play begins to look an awful lot like one year of hardcore play.

The Wikipedia entry on him is rather accurate, also www.2000AD.com is the homepage for the comics that he appears in.

I think I read that they plan to once again bring over reprints and collections of some of Dredd's stories to the states, no doubt to coincide with the movie.

Still, it's nice to have the collection in my library. Fun reading.

For the record, I grew up on 2000AD and Judge Dredd and all the classic stories of the early Dredd era (The Cursed Earth and The Dark Judges being two of them) and eagerly wanted the first Dredd film to do well. But I managed to find a cheap copy of the Making of Judge Dredd, and Stallone's hand was all over the process.

He couldn't get over the notion that the lead character's face was covered all the time, and thought there should be more humor in the script. And he ran roughshod over poor Danny Cannon, this being his first big-budget movie.

I lay the majority of the blame at Stallone's feet, and hopefully this film, being handled by Europeans last I read, will remember their source. Karl Urban is an oustanding choice.

I enjoyed the first Judge Dredd movie, but maybe that's because I never read the comic.

I knew he never showed his face in the comics, but them showing it in the movies, just seems really minor to me.

I've read them all and that movie was a pale ghost of what it could have been.

As to the helmet, call it a trademark of the character or a tradition or whatever, but he's supposed to be the faceless embodiment of justice per the creator. He's never been seen completely without it. There was a recent issue where he was sitting and fixing the damage to his radio but he was sitting in shadow so we only see his chin like always. There was another where he allowed someone to know what he looked like and took off his helmet for her, but the joke of the story was that she was blind and put her hands on his face and again all we saw was his nose and lower jaw due to her hands covering the rest of his face and head so again, his face wasn't revealed though she did mention some scars.

Kind of like how for years we never knew what Boba Fett looked like until the prequels revealed his father and that Boba is a clone of dear old daddy.

Ok based on that, I can blame Stallone yes. But blame still falls to the director, producers, etc. who didn't stand up to Stallone and smack some sense into him.

Hm, I wonder if for grins, or perhaps groans, we will get a cameo of Rob Schneider or Stallone in this new one? Kind of hope we don't.

*cough* http://www.2000adonline.com/ *cough*

I've not read 2000ad for donkey's years, I kinda felt Dredd's time came and went, the stories were all action-pap and not really what he was originally about; the last film came came far too late and reflected what the Dredd comic had become, there were only flashes of 'real' Dredd in there..

If it's done well, a Dredd movie should make you slightly uncormfortable cheering him on..but you will cheer him on.

He's an utter barstool.

Hmmm...truthfully, I highly doubt it would of done any better, if he kept the helmet on the whole time.

It seems to be a common complaint from the fans, but I highly doubt that keeping the helmet on would of made that big of a difference in it's profits.

Only if they're target dummies.

Unfortunately, the director had only done one movie beforehand so didn't have the authority to talk him down, and the producers were friends of Stallone, who, had up to that point had a string of highly successful movies under his belt and could call the shots when and how he wanted to. And after doing Demolition Man, which in a lot of ways is very much like Dredd, he felt he could repeat that on the Dredd set.

Plus, his ego wouldn't let him keep the helmet on, which is just as iconic as Superman's 'S' shield or Captain America's shield. It's just part of the character's mythology.

Steel yourself... new shots show both Dredd's uniform and his lawmaster bike.

His uniform is fine, but he bike is pretty wimpy looking, Lawmasters are huge bikes in the comics.

Maybe they're planning to beef it up with CGI later?

Not liking that bike or the uniform. As ****** as the first movie was, they got the look of the uniform and bike much closer to the comic design.
