Closed Beta and the NCSoft Newsletter.

I must be extremely ' newsletter wanting' somewhere as I usually get two copies to the same email.

For what its worth, I think there's a certain logic to this. The checkbox says:
Want to stay ahead of the game? Sign up here to receive the NCsoft newsletter, beta announcements, game trials and other exclusive offers - delivered straight to your inbox. Its entirely possible that the email invites into closed betas are technically "unsolicited email" and thus they need permission to actually send them to you. By unchecking this box, you not only eliminate mass email from NCSoft, you also eliminate the permission for them to send you *any* mass mailing, including closed beta invites. The checkbox all but *says* you need to check it to receive beta announcements and other offers, of which the closed betas are probably one of. |
GG, I would tell you that "I am killing you with my mind", but I couldn't find an emoticon to properly express my sentiment.
|
Ok i have the newsletter enabled and i barely get any "spam" from them I've only been in a very small handfull of closed betas and the majority of posters that i have seen in the early stages of them [yes i read the early CB threads ] seem to have been handpicked carefully and the ones that in truth, are the best for the early stages of closed betas for that particular issue.
Regarding GG relaying this information, whether its bad information or not, its still one of those pieces of information that even if there was a hint of it being true, then should be relayed to the public/sent forward to a member of the CC team just to get it more public. We all know the forums/sites have been buggy lately so could even have something to do with that being checked
Closed beta invites, personally i wouldnt mind if i ever got stopped being invited to them just as long as there are the right people in it doing a good job of it. For example the i19 beta, i dont think i was ANY help at all due to me being far too busy in RL and unable to get into test for more than 30 mins a day.
Anyway, thanks GG for this information and hope to hear off a member of the CC team to confirm whether this is true or not [though i do think it is true, since i know people ingame who have played far more than i have and didnt get a "loyalty" invite].
@Damz Find me on the global channel Union Chat. One of the best "chat channels" ingame!
True, except for the fact people like myself have got into closed Betas without actually reciveing any email whatsoever. I don't think I've ever recieved a Beta email, yet I've been in a fair few of the closed Betas now. *shrug* C'est la vie |

This myth is busted. |

I get the newsletters, but did not get a closed beta invite email. I did suddenly see the closed beta forums one day and, surprise, I could log in to the beta server. Checked spam folders and there was nothing there.
You might be in closed beta, but not get an email about it. |
I've been in closed betas before, received the emails about it but never, ever receive a newsletter from CoH.
There was a thread about this issue months and months ago...I've checked all settings on the ncsoft site were correct and that the checkbox was checked but still no newsletter.

I've never been in a Closed Beta (I'm not counting the loyalty program beta for GR, because that was all-but open). I feel all left out now.
I keep getting invites to closed betas. I have no idea how or why.
.
But...
We all know that there are certain people and groups that get a hand picked invitation. E.g., during the PvP changes, certain PvP supergroups were invited. They all got emails. At no point did any Mod say, "Make sure you have 'receive newsletters' checked." They did say over and over, "Make sure your email and account information is up to date so you get the email." The fact that there are people in this thread without that checkbox checked who have been invited into closed beta sort of disproves the assertion. The worst that could happen is people who are invited into Beta don't get the email, but they see the closed forum and can log in. And we all know there are plenty of folks in that category. This myth is busted. |
But the checkbox may impede your ability to be randomly selected into a closed beta wave.
Its also something they might only periodically honor: they may take extracts from the subscriber database periodically to use by the system that generates closed beta invites, and if the checkbox is unchecked you aren't in the extract. But if you've been put into the closed beta database at any time prior, it doesn't matter what the checkbox is set to, because you're already there. Unless they periodically purge that database, and I know if they do its not often. Either way, I think there's lots of possibilities that would make the statement true, albeit somewhat garbled through intermediaries.
** Although its also possible people don't get the email by malfunction. I've always had the checkbox checked, and yet you'd be surprised how often my beta invite gets screwed up. I've sometimes learned I was in a closed beta when a dev asked me a question about it, and I didn't even know it had started yet. Sure enough, account works, no email.

It's interesting speculation... but still not really confirmation.

Still, if I were J. Random Player and was interested in getting into closed betas either by specific invite or by random wave, I would probably check the box no matter what the community reps say. If I were concerned about the spam, I'd just make a special gmail account for my NCSoft contact address so it would all funnel in there (and in fact, I do have a special email account for all of my MMO registrations).

This is still my MMO home. And not for lack of exposure. I never got into WoW, in spite of lots of people trying to get me into that game. I thought MxO would have a shot, but the designers were on too much drugs. AoC was just, well, AoC, and WAR was, well, WAR. CO was CoX without all the lucky mistakes, and STO is still fun, but not really engaging. TR had promise, but then rocks fall everyone dies. Eve is too much like work. I'm going to give DCUO and SW:TOR their fair shot, but I suspect when all is said and done here is where I'll end up again.
Besides, I have this great idea for an epic archetype...

If I were picking people to invite:
-I'd look at people who've put time in on the Test server in the past.
-I'd look at people who were active in game during Cryptic work hours.
-Considering the previous, I'd still try to get a good mix of East, West and Central players.
-I'd look at people who've submitted bug reports in the past, especially in past betas.
-I'd look for people who actually showed up for past beta tests.
-I'd look for accounts in good standing (Frankly, it boggles me why I keep getting invited).
-I wouldn't necessarily restrict myself to active acocunts. Getting an unexpected invite may cause someone to return.
-I wouldn't necessarily look for people who were active on the forums.
To me at least, those seem like logical criteria for choosing who to invite. If I was looking to get invited to closed beta, it couldn't hurt trying to fit that profile, IMO.
.
Usually, the way I know that I'm in a closed Betas is by checking the Dev Digest. The e-mails seem to be very spotty.
And I don't get the NCSoft newsletter. |
Speculation - GG's source mistook "announcement" to mean "invite" in the "beta announcements" mentioned on that newsletter check box when it simply means "announcement".

Golden Girl's original post is correct. I've been warning people about that checkbox since I got a PM from a redname telling me to go to my account and fix it.

You probably do need to check that box to get an email about your invite. I have it unchecked, yet I get invites, so you don't seem to need it checked to be invited.
