Which is it?
A bit opf both - the person who told me this said they were told it by a red name.

I'll try and contact him again this evening - but I think I have the chat log anyway.

Usually, the way I know that I'm in a closed Betas is by checking the Dev Digest. The e-mails seem to be very spotty.

And I don't get the NCSoft newsletter.

I'm thinking you got some bad info. This requirement makes no sense.

GG is just trying to give people a heads up on info she received, nothing more. She is being nice. Now to me the info doesn't really make sense(why would I need to ok spam from NCSoft to get in a beta for CoH?), but she is just relaying it as she understands.

If I had to guess, I would say she got bad info. But it is just a guess.

Have got into the past few Betas without email and without the newsletter activated. Until I see conformation of that, I'm gonna treat it sceptically.

And yeah, Servere lives up to his name when it comes to attempted character assassination. GG may occasionally have moments of being a bit samey, but she's also got some funny moments, and is generally cheerful and welcoming to new forumites. I also tended to 'spam' the forums when I was in the past Betas because, hey, I type fast, and I found bugs and feedback/opinions to voice. Go figure, I guess.

I checked my spare email for the first time in a long time last night to click a registration link, and LO there was an I19 closed beta invite sitting there.

Oh well, I haven't really got the time to test anything anyway.

If nothing else this post thread did get me to update my contact info. It was horribly, horribly outdated.

Personally, I like her posts and I'm usually one to get overly irritated at massive numbers of pointless posts. Hers are amusing, many times helpful, and sometimes downright insightful. I'm guessing that there's more going on here than just, "She posts a lot." My money is on her making a suggestion or a comment on someone else's suggestion that he didn't like, and this was some sort of misguided revenge. At any rate, I think it fell way short of whatever he was trying to accomplish by posting it.

GG, aren't you usually one of the first to jump on others that post "I heard this, so it must be true" posts that have no links or proof of validity attached?

You know better.

Same here - not subscribed to the newsletter, been a few CBs, usually find out by being able to see the CB forums, not by getting an email (though I got an email first the last time).

Sounds like an urban myth to me, someone add it to the list, right alongside clicking the glowies in the blueside respec.

I'm not sure if turning the newsletter back on is enough or not, or if it needs a red name to get you back to being available for possible invites in the future, but for anyone who doesn't have the newsletter turned on, you should go to your master account right away, and edit your contact information to accept the newsletter.
GG is just passing on some information that could be of benefit. DOn't see the point of going off on her. For those that counter with the statement that you've been invited to lots of closed betas previously, the key phrase was "never be eligible for a closed beta invite ever again" (also highlighted in red). If you think it's crazy, then leave it as is. For me, it's always been yes and it really isn't a whole lot of spam that they send out.

Very possible and reasonable to question it, but the lengths to which some people have decided to react ("icky carebears"?) doesn't really track with the proposed information -- it's not like she's going to directly benefit from people checking the box....

Here is what I know.

I had a close friend that left the game.

Months ago he disabled his newsletter, canceled his account.

He received the CB invite via email.

He doesn't have GR either.

Someone told me that they heard from an NCSoft employee that you're guaranteed to get a Closed Beta invite if you send in a picture of yourself wearing a bra. It's just what I heard.

For what it's worth, I do have my newsletter box check and NEVER receive anything from NCSoft or Paragon Studios. Ever. Well, except for e-mails confirming bug reports and such. I actually find the lack of newsletter info annoying since I have to come onto the forums to FIND new info instead of being told about it in a newsletter. I have also been invited to the last few closed betas as well. As a matter of fact, I got two invites for Issue 18 closed beta about a week apart.

I'm concerned that people would spread 3rd hand information around without double checking their sources. Maybe it's just me, but I see too much of that occurring these days in various media. It's my opinion that this stems from the popularity of certain "networking" activities... but what do I know? I'm just an old fuddy-duddy.

If there's any revenge going on (and I don't see anything approaching that, TBH), it would be for GG's incessant one-liners punctuated by a smiley.

For what its worth, I think there's a certain logic to this. The checkbox says:

Want to stay ahead of the game? Sign up here to receive the NCsoft newsletter, beta announcements, game trials and other exclusive offers - delivered straight to your inbox.

Its entirely possible that the email invites into closed betas are technically "unsolicited email" and thus they need permission to actually send them to you. By unchecking this box, you not only eliminate mass email from NCSoft, you also eliminate the permission for them to send you *any* mass mailing, including closed beta invites.

The checkbox all but *says* you need to check it to receive beta announcements and other offers, of which the closed betas are probably one of.

But...

We all know that there are certain people and groups that get a hand picked invitation. E.g., during the PvP changes, certain PvP supergroups were invited. They all got emails. At no point did any Mod say, "Make sure you have 'receive newsletters' checked." They did say over and over, "Make sure your email and account information is up to date so you get the email."

The fact that there are people in this thread without that checkbox checked who have been invited into closed beta sort of disproves the assertion.

The worst that could happen is people who are invited into Beta don't get the email, but they see the closed forum and can log in. And we all know there are plenty of folks in that category.

This myth is busted.
