Um. You know that was a South Park reference for five years before 4chan existed, right?

Having Vengeance and Fallout slotted for recharge means never having to say you're sorry.

Well I've just had an IIS error page when trying to view the Forums.

Basically said "Database error" when I tried to view New Posts. Took a few minutes to resolve.

I get that regularly, mixed in with all the same things everyone else is getting.

I'm getting REALLY annoyed by it, and I'm not happy. We pay for these boards too, y'know. Time they stopped dodging the issue and either fix them, or break the link with the game accounts so this doesn't keep happening.

Over the last few weeks, working with the forums has been such a chore I'm this close to not wanting to even bother. The forums randomly STOP working and load for hours and hours, spit out garbage or errors like the abovementioned, or just tell me the page cannot be found. This has been happening more and more often and lasting longer and longer.

Wasn't this exactly the kind of thing why they swapped forum software types?

I've managed to localize one thing that causes it, at least on Firefox.

If I browse to http://boards.coh.com and not http://boards.cityofheroes.com, logging in doesn't work because Firefox only saves the cookie for boards.coh.com and the login script redirects to boards.cityofheroes.com. Or something.

Sadly, that's not the problem for some of us. I have never logged in via boards.coh.com. I don't have any cookies for it.

I have since pecking out cityofheroes on my iPhone was so much slower. I think the login bug probably started happening at the same time that boards.coh.com stopped working for me so that's why I suggested that configuration changes at that time were a good place to start looking.

Really weird:

Last night at about 11:35pm, I was logged off when I returned after being away for a few hours, so I attempted to log back in.

Thank you for logging in, gameboy1234! Then it promptly logs me off when the auto-redirect takes effect.

So I try again.

Okaaaaaaaay. Whatever. So I cruise around the forums a bit anyway. About 5 minutes later, it logs me in automatically.

Wah?

I'm not going to guess why this may be happening, but I thought I'd mention it in case it gives someone a clue.

Good luck.

QR to OP;

A man and his dog. The man is blind and has one arm. The Dog tends to do all the tech support. Having no opposable thumbs, this presents the poor pooch with a problem.
It also explains why the forums tend to be so shoddy when it comes to things like this.

The dog also has to work part time on the NCSoft store. As it's sole janitor. Which explains why that is a giant, steaming pile of turd.

Why yes, the store has just refused me buying something twice, how did you guess...?

You thought that was a 4chan reference? Where've you been living, under a rock? That's SOUTH PARK!

Bah! I only quote original material. The Underpants Gnomes originated on South Park and it was so brilliant that the concept is used in discussions of business and economics.

What the heck is coh103.gtm and why is it serving me forum pages? Should it be?

Clutching at straws here but again maybe something will be a clue.
That may be the real hostname of a web server behind a load balancer that's referenced by the main host name (boards.cityofheroes.com). This is a common web/application server architecture for both handling lots of traffic as well as for providing higher overall availability in the case that one of the web/app servers dies.

On the other hand, it would be moderately unusual for the "real" app servers to be on the outside of the data center network, and thus addressable directly in that way. It does depend on the application architecture (is it hosted directly on the web server host?) and how the load balancer works. Not all of the options make spanning a network translation layer/firewall convenient.

I am going to poke around some now. >.>

Im sorry but all I could think of when I read the title of this thread was Master Blaster asking "who runs the forums?"

Forgot to mention that when I use that URL above I do not get logged in, even though I'm logged in here, and I'm still logged in when I come back. Weird weird.

So it might be "just" an internal server name, but it seems to by-pass the login somehow.

That's probably got something to do with how they have the cookie domain defined. They've mapped the cookie to the fully qualified name "boards.cityofheroes.com", so your browser won't send that host the info in your cookie for the boards, because the host's name doesn't match. If it can't access the cookie, it can't read your session information, so it thinks you're not logged in.

Woah, this thread was getting pretty close to the bottom of Page 1. This is still an issue, right?

Yup, still an issue. I logged in, clicked a link, logged in again...

Oh, yeah. Still an issue. Just this morning I was logged out after reading my first post of the day. But they've said they're working on it, so...

Edit: and just got logged out again.

Yea, happened to me again today too. It's been better for me recently than it has for quite a while though.

Of course, saying that I've surely jinxed myself on that front.
