Most would become supervillains if given superpowers, study says.

Put me in the not surprised in the least column.

total kick to the gut

This is like having Ra's Al Ghul show up at your birthday party.

I am shocked! Shocked to discover that people would use power to their own advantage!

Of course the worst offenders would be the ones who wouldn't see their actions as evil smug in their own arrogance.

True, but those wimps get wiped out as soon as they pop their heads up.

Be well, people of CoH.

That would depend on what powers they had - If I had Kryptonian level powers, I'd keep the bad guys away

I'm not entirely sure of your brand of justice, but that's another thread.

Did anybody else take the survey linked at the end of the article? Some interesting questions there.

Eh, the real money is in being a beloved superhero... and then making sure to have all IP rights to toys, movies, video games, comic books and all other kinds of things that your face could be put on for profit.

Make people love you and then sell merchandise. At a reasonable price, of course.

Heh, in the GURPS Supers campaign I'm running right now, one of the first things the new supers did after their first public appearance (which is where they all met and formed a superteam) was copyright their likenesses, names, etc.

Damn right I'd be a supervillain. All of you peons would bow down before my awesomitude! You'd serve me for eternity and you'd LIKE it! BWAHAHAHAHA!

Very unlikely.

Define "bad guys", GG. I suspect you are just as likely to become a tyrant as any one of us. For example: I'd try to create a live-and-let-live society where all ignorant intolerances would be punishable. I'm super-powered, so I can afford to be a hypocrite...

I'm not foolish enough to think that absolute power wouldn't have any effect on me.

I think most people are missing the "bigger picture" about whether you end up being a super hero or super villain. You don't just start out with being all evil and selfish - that's the sloppy way to do it.

What you do first is be all nice and helpful. You become so well loved and cherished by the unwashed masses that they'll gladly accept your slow but eventual total domination and control over everything. Why not be the super mastermind ruler of the world AND have the world love you for doing it? *smiles deviously*

Very well done. That's a broad enough scope that you can burn anyone you want, and tell the public that they were "Bad people harming innocent people."

You can be a tyrant yet.

Bingo! With Kryptonian level powers it'd be pretty easy to rationalize your actions and judge anyone around you to suit whatever your agenda happened to be.

I just violently subdued you for arresting people in an illegal fashion (super powered vigilantism), which harms the rights of those who from a legal perspective are potentially innocent.

Continue? (Y/N)

P.S.: You were also eaten by a grue.

No one get's burnt - they get arrested and have a normal trial like anyone else

Protecting innocent people from harm doesn't need rationalizing because it's a natural thing to do - only villains need to rationalize their actions, because they're acting un-naturally
