City of Heroes plans to roll out Issue 19 this month

Tomorrow is the panel for City of Heroes at the New York Comic Con, but the events have already started in the city and some word is beginning to leak out. After yesterday's rather upsetting news, it's good to hear that Issue 19 is closer than we might think -- most likely by the end of the month. That's the word from Melissa Bianco during an interview earlier today, and while we'll have the full interview in a day or so, we wanted to share the tidbit now.

While more details will be discussed at the panel tomorrow, the plan is for Issue 19 to go into closed beta next week, with the issue going to the live servers not too long after that. It's unclear whether or not there will be any time for the patch on the public test server, but we'll learn more with the official panel starting at 11 a.m. EDT tomorrow. Until then, City of Heroes players can content themselves with everything they already do know about the patch.

EDIT: Massively has now removed the above-quoted article for some unknown reason. So until any definite news comes out (possibly at today's NYCC panel), please take the above as rumor and speculation.

ANNnnd they did already get a decent amount of beta coverage of the Alpha slot during part of GR closed beta.

Either way, this is good news. I'm eager to get my mitts on all those new blaster animations. Hoping for two or three animations per power as Noble Savage mentioned "flavors" as well as different points of emanation--but even one alternate animation per power is exciting at this point.

Well, the feedback they got there was the reason it was delayed until I19 - so they've already gotten a pretty good idea of what players are looking form from the alpha slot, and the closed beta might be more focused on tweaking rather than any major overhauls.

Not really any new tech in this issue, just more. Possibly some new tech in the new TFs, and the Alpha slot might be changed from GR beta. Everything else is just more. Very awesome more, but just more.

That's a good guess. I certainly hope that's the case.

When I saw the dates for the Halloween event I was surprised it actually ended on Halloween, seemed they were ending it earlier then years in the past. I'm now thinking they want to wrap the event up as soon as possible to make room for I19.

Halloween > nov = i19 > dec = xmas event > jan/feb = i20?

In Massively's defense it does say the word rumour in the article so they haven't really said it's for definate, it's just a possibility.

I'm more than a little apprehensive they are doing it so quickly, i'd rather they wait until it's relatively bug free and give it more testing than rush it to live and have no end of trouble. Got the Halloween event to content everyone in the mean time so i don't know what all the rush is about to get it published.

The above is only my opinion, please don't hate me for it

GhostRaptor: Server populations have been trending upwards since Issue 13 release. There are no current plans for any server mergers and we're looking forward to Issue 14 and the rest of the year.

That's an incredibly optimistic statement.

You want it to be released before it's fully tested?

Then why say the beta will be short if they're having problems?

Incarnates and Alpha slots did go through some beta testing during the GR beta. So there's not much to test, other than the new version.

I honestly cannot tell what you're trying to suggest when you end every fricking post with a winkie.

Anyway, what I was suggesting is that the devs have a history of pushing Issue releases with a lot of moderate-to-major bugs still present, so a short Beta is really not necessarily indicative of successful testing and bugfixing.

But there's no need to release it this early unless it's going well - they could double the testing time and still have it out several weeks before the Christmas holidays started.

Well, that and the two new task forces.

And the (presumed) story arc to unlock the slot.

And alternate blast animations.

And the Praetoria zone events.

And the additional tip/morality missions.

And inherent Fitness.

And the various other QoL fixes.

So yeah, not a whole lot to test at all!
