I Hate "Information"

Ok, as much as I love Going Rogue and Praetoria, can I just say how much I hate "information"? Yes, I know they're trying to tie "influence" and "infamy" together, but come on, bite the bullet and call it SuperCreds or something, already.

I use it to buy stuff. It's money. I don't spend information, I spend currency. (And I have a hard time believing Serge is so hard up for gossip that he'll trade "information" for fabulousness.)

They all laughed at me when I said I wanted to be a comedian.
But I showed them, and nobody's laughing at me now!

Mechanically, they're all the same.

And I absolutely believe that Serge would trade "Information" for clothes if the Information was good enough. The entire world of Praetoria runs on secrets, lies, and backstabbing. Everyone has a secret they know that they'd kill to protect as well as one they are lacking that they'd kill to have.

Give me a character and I can make up, on the spot, why they would trade their services for Information. Here, let's do Serge:

  • Serge is a passionate Loyalist who gets by on currying favor with Cole. Giving him the info he needs to please Cole is vital to the system, ah, coincidentally deciding that he's the most prominent fashion designer out there.
  • Serge is a passionate Resistance member. While he only pretends to be gossiping and shooting the breeze, the idle talk he gets while dressing those blueberries helps his brothers and sisters to chomp 'em before they get chomped first.
  • Akin to Arbiter Fabulous, Serge's passion for fashion is genuinely wicked. He attains his "rare" garments from illegal sources that the Emperor would confiscate. You are assisting in this process.

These are off the top of my head. Your mileage may vary.

You don't want to call it strictly "money" because that would break some role playing concepts which depend upon their character being rich enough to afford whatever technologies they are utilizing.

So Praetoria is like Star Trek and no one uses money. Fine. Doesn't mean I can't hate it.

Full disclosure: I'm a fanboi and non-RPer. I don't tend to think about RP aspects. All I know is I spend money to buy stuff, and I have to earn money before I can buy stuff.

Word.

Also, NuclearToast, it's not that money doesn't "exist". It does, but referencing something tangible steps on character concepts as well as various aspects of immersions.

- "Le sigh. I am the angsty outcast villain that lives on the street, eats garbage and psychotically kills everyone that looks at me. I'm also level 50 and have 12 billion Rogue Isle Moniez."

- "Behold! I am a wealthy playboy genius who buys all of his technology and arrests foes of King's Row. I keep them in jail by buying the legal system. I'm also level 1 and have six Schrute Bucks."

- "Great job, boys! That Mayhem Mission allowed us to rob that bank clean! And for that, we get just as much money as when we kidnapped Amanda Vines just to scare her."

... if they call it something that can be defined, it's the first step in hindering character concepts.

I like information, influence and infamy. It all suits the various areas of the world perfectly.

Money is what you use to buy your morning coffee, pay the rent, and enables you to feed your dog.

Money is the RP stuff.

Actually only the United Federation of Planets doesn't use money within its own system, sometimes referred to as "The New Economy".

However, there is such a thing as Federation currency, which they use to buy and sell things with other political entities, such as the Ferengi or the Klingons. Though a lot of the time, they prefer to trade goods and services instead of using money.

Most other worlds outside the Federation still seem to have some form of currency used throughout their economy.

And now you know!

This was my thought on seeing information as the currency in a fascist utopia as well.

Personally, i think its perfectly appropriate.

Oh yeah, and as noted from elsewhere, Praetoria is a Fascist Utopia. If it used no money, like the UFP does, then it would be a Communist Utopia. Big difference there!

EDIT: Actually, I kinda think the UFP is more like a Socialist Utopia. One that relies on replicator technology to do away with scarcity and need altogether!

Haven't you ever played Shadowrun, or any Cyberpunk style PnP Roleplaying game? Information is always as valuable as cash, if not more so. Sure, you could spend money... but why spend cash when you could blackmail someone with information they don't want others to know, or trade information on rivals to a gangbanger in exchange for new hardware?

I did, but she toppled over. I blame high-heel shoes.

Didn't War Witch say they'll be unifying all currencies into a singular INF currency?

You'd need some pretty large pockets.

They are now, I believe.

Praetorian gets Information, at 20 goes to Rogue Isles, their current funds change to Infamy, they do some Tip missions and a morality one, change to Hero, and then their funds become Influence.
