Okay, here's my theory:
The lack of female thugs/mercs/ninjas -- when there are obviously female cops etc. in the npc sets -- is just so baffling an oversight that people tried to come up with an explanation for it. And someone came up with, "What if someone went all Frank Miller with it?" and that was just so interestingly weird that it stuck.
Whereas the real explanation is probably more like, "The henchman sets got slapped together quicklike and whoever did it was a little bit old-fashioned."
Anyway, bottom line -- gimme female soldiers. In combat fatigues just like the male soldiers. Gimme female thugs in t-shirts and jeans and leather vests. Gimme female ninjas in ninja gear. And if I call myself The Pope of Pimp and name all my henchmen Candi, go ahead and ban me. -
I love this idea. Several of my characters already have favorite enemies, even though it has no in-game effect. Jake Salem will always take the newspaper mission that allows him to pee in the Family's cheerios if there is one. Always without fail. (And he won't take any missions that require him to beat up Scrapyarders (cuz he's a working-class thug, right?) but that's a different concept.) Ren Fangbai has a perpetual mad-on for the Tsoo because their ancestor-ghost mojo offends his medieval Buddhist sensibilities. And so forth.
It would be so very awesome if there could be mission arcs where you get to pwn your favored enemy, or even just -- like someone already said -- get an option of going after them in each set of newspaper/radio missions. A small bonus would be fun, but I'd love it even without that. More ways to play out your character's epic story in actual gameplay is always win.
So yeah. In short: Cheers! -
Quote:Yep, you are correct. On my mercs MM, I tried to name one of my mercs Joker -- I was thinking of Private Joker from Full Metal Jacket -- and it wouldn't let me.NOT entirely true.
Certain names are considered invalid. I learned this when I was trying to name one of my robots Starscream due to his constant failure (Also tried Star Scream) and the error message said it was invalid. (second one didn't work either. Needless to say, Megatron was also void.)
As for the 'fear of pimps' issue -- I don't want to get all rancorous about it, but I, too, would love to see some kind of citation. I've seen lots of people say that lots of people say it, but never seen a pointer to any kind of official response. The reason I'm tempted to doubt is because it's not a very logical objection. It's very easily countered. It's weird and funny, though, and weird funny things get repeated. So I'm suspecting forum mythology on this one. You know -- "I've heard it so many times it MUST be true," kind of thing. -
Re 'rocks fall everyone dies' endings: I hate them with a passion when the ending invalidates the rest of the plot. But I can like them quite a bit when 'everyone dies' is an actual resolution of the plot. I guess you could say 'everyone loses' or 'bad guy wins' would be in that category too. If you discover, at the end, that the point of the movie was actually, "This is how it all ended up going wrong," then it works for me.
But if it's like, "LOL nevermind aliens nuked it anyway," then I throw things at my television and that's not a nice thing to make me do.
I loved 'The Departed'; it reminded me of a Shakespeare tragedy. You wouldn't say 'Hamlet' was pointless because it ended with a pile of corpses, right? Because winning wasn't the point. It was the story of how people take a bad situation and, while trying to fix it, actually make it worse, and the human drama that comes out of it. Love that stuff.
Of course, I always have to watch a comedy afterwards to clear my mind. It's possible to have too much tragic human drama. -
That's encouraging. I never used to dismiss mine, so I hadn't seen it. Running off and fading would be fine. Falling down instantly dead makes me a sad panda.

*snerk!* So true.
I named my arsonist Zippo, and every other mission I'm yelling at the screen, "Augh, Zippo, you dumb***! No! Bad pyro! Bad!" And I pretend that my refusal to resummon him means I smacked him upside the head and sent him back to base to make me a sammich. -
Cool, I'll return the favor.
Quote:-Pets die when dismissed.- Yeah i have to agree with you there. But not all do. Jounin use smoke bombs, and demons, get swallowed up by an infernal pit. Perhaps, something like the costume change emotes, would be nice i suppose.
Quote:-Appearance changes whenever you go through a door. - I think this is because, they respawn every time you zone. There may be no way around this issue. and It certainly beets the alternative. Or do you like the Idea of re summoning every minion at the beginning of each mission?
Quote:-All gendered pets are male. - Been requested, and devs have stated it's not going to happen, due to the possibility of pimping issues. But it'd be impossible for anyone to do that anyway unless full costume customization were allowed. Simply adding female thugs/mercs/ninjas in the same costumes the male ones have would prevent the pimp scenario.
Quote:-Mercs medic is suicidal. & Thugs arsonist has a deathwish. - this has to do with the ai, apparently it's not something they can fix for balance reasons.
Quote:-No customization whatsoever. - it's been suggested. personally, I think we'd be more likely to be able to customize their colours. I don't believe they will be able to set it so we can change what they look like. even though it is possible.
Quote:-Mercs summon radio is the size of a lunchbox.- Yeah, but so are all the radios in Cox. I think it may because the war walls make radio transmition difficult. -
Quote:Maybe I'll just pick and choose, then. It'll make the switch take longer, but why be in a hurry? There are some that are like that - like I said in my post I did a Vigilante mission where I blew up a lab with, from what I can tell, all the mobs still inside. If that isn't efficient-and-permanent I don't know what is!!
I think there are just a mixture of ones like I've encountered and ones that Jophiel has encountered. -
(I'm sure this has been brought up plenty before, but I couldn't find a relevant thread to necro; apologies if I missed something obvious.)
There are some things about MM pets that really need looking at. I know there are coherent reasons why they haven't been fixed yet, but I hope that can change soon. In decreasing order of importance:
- Pets die when dismissed.
Poor guys! I just wanted you to go wait for me in the coffee shop! I didn't mean to make you feel so rejected that you became suicidal!
- Appearance changes whenever you go through a door. I could've sworn my arsonist was a redhead five minutes ago... Seriously, why let us name them when their faces keep changing?
- All gendered pets are male. I love a girl in uniform. But seriously, is there even a reason for this?
- Mercs medic is suicidal. Is it because I made a dismiss macro? Is that why he wants to die?
- Thugs arsonist has a deathwish. I don't think it's anything I said. I think he's just a little dim.
- No customization whatsoever. I can understand not giving us access to the full costume creator for each pet, but please let us choose from a limited set of outfits, or at least pick a couple of colors. Hell, if they wouldn't do a switcheroo at every door, even picking from a lineup of ready-made appearances would be an improvement.
- Mercs summon radio is the size of a lunchbox. If I have to use Vietnam-era technology to call them, I want them to show up wearing camo facepaint, glasses, sweaty t-shirts, and helmets with 'Born to Kill' written on them. Yeah.
- Pets die when dismissed.

I'd be satisfied with a really limited customization set. Can't use the 'but idiots would play pimps' excuse if your choices for female merc costumes are desert camo, jungle camo, or dress uniforms. I'd love a female thug or two, and if they have the same clothing options as the guys, that's perfectly fine with me -- I just want to have all my thug-herder's rowdy friends wear his gang colors.
Basically, pet customization would work just fine if they were given limited costume options. Sorta like the widow/solder AT's start with.
First, though, I want to see pets stop switching faces every time you go through a door, and dropping dead whenever you dismiss them. -
Aw dangit, and I was so looking forward to the vigilante stuff. See, the guy I'd planned to take to vigilante, he's a 13th century soldier (handwave centuries of magical stasis) who still has 13th century morals -- 'burn and pillage this town for the good of the empire!' kinda thing. So I was thinking he'd be having a little trouble adjusting to the modern 'we don't kill people ever' form of heroism, and would prefer to take care of problems in the most efficient and permanent way.
But if the vigilante options aren't the efficient-and-permanent kind of solutions, it sounds like I'm going to need a few beers to choke them down. -
Quote:What you are smoking, please share it.And while I'm still on the subject of Automatons, how come every inconspicuous office full of them always has a Warhulk present? And how do they pass that thing off?
"NO GUYS IT'S JUST AN ANTIQUE WATER COOLER *CLICK*."
And then everyone's like "But there's a dude in it" and they're not programmed to reply to that insinuation so they're like "ERROR CLEVER COVERUP 96 NOT FOUND BZZT HAIL NEMESIS KILL CHILDREN" and suddenly everyone's suspicious of the new guy. -
Definitely someone to cheer for. Couple reasons. Main reason: intentional 'audience surrogate characters' are usually conspicuous by their boringness. Secondary reason: with the notable exception of Jack Harkness, GLBT characters always lack awesome, so I don't really want to identify with 'my demographic' in fiction. Also: heroes are more fun to watch than joes.
Talking like a Rikti: why I am doing it: unknown. -
LMAO at GG! Keep 'em coming!
(Only... possibly not quite so wide? Mercy for the laptop crowd?) -

Hiro Nakamura and Detective Parkman ARE TOO superheroes. Fat slider FTW.

Relatively new player here -- been playing for a couple months, highest toon is 23 or something like that. So I still don't know all these cool tricks, and I was never good at number crunching anyway, certainly not at speed. My experience is that Praetoria is definitely more challenging, with frequent spikes of "Oh my gawd, how is anyone even supposed to do this?"
My non-Praetorian characters have been leveling a lot faster since GR came out. :P
Oh, and can I just mention... 2 minute timers? Who thought up 2 minute timers? Because I owe that guy a bug down his shirt. Argh. -

It's not all that uncommon for soldiers with PTSD to sign up for another tour. There's kinds and degrees, you know? Some people also choose to confront their fears rather than avoiding them.
For my sister, one of her worst triggers (no pun intended) was the sound of a gun. She chose to deal with it by coming to the gun range with me. At first, sitting in the car listening to music so she could barely hear the gunfire. Then, standing well behind me and watching me shoot. Finally, taking the gun herself, working up from one or two shots (after which she had to leave) to a real practice session. It didn't cure her PTSD, of course, but she no longer bursts into tears when she hears a truck backfire.
Come to think of it, a character who's continuing to fight crime in order to fight their own fears would be really interesting to play. -
Quote:Oh yes, must agree. A lot of work in the first place, but possibly labor-saving for devs in later days. What addons people create and which ones are popular constitutes very reliable feedback on how people play and what features they like and dislike. There's a ton of little fidgety bits I'd like to be able to tweak about the interface, leading to the single biggest suggestion:
Write the interface in Lua and allow user-written addons. Let us do things like write an addon which remembers prices it's seen for items in WW/BM, or create our own button bars, or change the look of the "Target" frame, and so on.
Yeah, it's a lot of work, but the QoL improvement is essentially unbounded. I used to maintain addons for another MMO, and it was a lot of fun, and addons are one of the things I miss most. (More than I miss, say, broadcast channels where roughly 1/10 of the traffic consists of people saying "You know why they call it an xbox 360? Because when you see it you turn 360 degrees and walk away." Over and over. In the hopes that someone will "correct" them and they can have had some kind of power over their world.) -
All you folks mega-multitasking while playing give me the huhs. o_O
I've got severe ADD; even medicated, I get overstimulated if there's too much going on. If I tried to watch videos, chat, etc. while playing, I'd get mega-brain-freeze and go into Shivering Fetal Ball form.
So I pretty much do the opposite. Shut everything out. Comfy chair in spouse's room, glass of iced coffee, fullscreen, no music... ahh heaven. Duo or trio at most, cuz large groups make my brain explode. Duo with spouse usually, or chat verbally while I'm soloing and she's doing big pugs. Every hour or so I go out on the porch for a smoke break even if I'm not niccing, to let my brain cool down.
So relaxing. I've been a gamer all my life and this game is becoming my all-time favorite.
