Now I can't play for two hours, what a great surprise!

Actually, I agree with him on that. The forums are to increase an experience. I also don't feel they should be mandatory for absolutely vital information. Anything that must be conveyed to the players (such as things that might inconvenience their ability to log in) should be attainable in as few clicks as possible. I'm talkin' one: Clicking the CoH button.

My opinion. And that's more on the philosophy of an online gaming experience, which has no "correct" answer.

Well, the thing is... that information WAS out there. And in the shortest way possible: It automatically did it when you exited the game after playing.

Of course, this only happens when you access the game in the proper way.

This line of argument is, essentially, the same reason why we have "Do Not Eat" labels on inedible things, "Do Not Use in Bathtub" warnings on hairdryers and all sorts of signage telling people things that they shouldn't need to be told anyway.

Use it properly, it works properly. Don't and it doesn't. Quite simple, IMO.

"the proper way" to WHO? Sounds like a design flaw to me: If you want this benefit you MUST run the game in this way!

I have a habit of not using the updater because I used to crash quite a bit, and having to verify files is VERY annoying. The only way I know to skip that is to skip the updater - so it's a design flaw.

But to be honest, I probably wouldn't have downloaded it ahead of time anyway. The download makes my computer run slow and I would have preferred just doing it tomorrow, when I knew the patch was coming out, and I could just run it while I do some thing else. But then they released it early, and here I am being unable to play...

I'm not complaining about missing out on the pre download because I don't use the updater, but have pre downloads always been tied to the updater? I've been skipping the updater since issue 3 and this is the only time I can remember missing out of a predownload.

Of course in a month I'll forget the lesson I learned today and miss the next predownload and be all surprised again.

your workaround for crummy hardware isn't the devs responsibility, sorry.

This.

The OP is responsible for his crappy computer not the devs.

not that I'm unsympathetic to people playing on substandard computers- I used to be one of them.

but I put the blame where it belonged, right on the shoulders of my crummy hardware.

Wait, WHAT? Your play experience was hampered by numerous crashes, so instead of letting the game verify files and possibly correct problems, you just circumvented the fix?

I agree that you should never be expected to read the forums, but using the updater isn't bad design...it's a nice catch-all for the computer inept to get the patches they need to play. It's a standard MMO practice and I love it.

Secondly, I'm not usually a dev apologist, but I imagine threads like this make them just throw their hands up and sigh. "Christmas got bumped up a day, and since no-one told me, I had to shop for a ham today! Bah Humbug!"

as I like to say, if the devs handed out free gold bars some folk would complain about how heavy they were.

I'm not unsympathetic either as I was in the OP's situation 2 years ago, but I agree with you the blame is in the hardware on the OP's end.

Today I can make mistakes(but it's unlikely). Tomorrow is when the mistakes stop.

It really is though. They're the ones who didn't add a "skip" for verifying files.

Incorrect. I've verified my files DOZENS of times. Yet, the crashes still occurred. It's only because it doesn't fix any thing that I decided to stop wasting my time with it.

Sorry to tell you this. The Updater has its limitations. It can't fix hardware problems, or software problems unrelated to the CoH/V/GR software itself.

There I was between a rock and a hard place. Then I thought, "What am I doing on this side of the rock?"

If an update made your computer spit out $100 bills every minute, people would complain that the bills weren't sequential. If it were changed so they were sequential, people would complain that they needed the untraceable cash.

Yes, I know that...that's why it's useless to me and therefore I skip it.

I can see that happening. "I carry books with me on monday, adding gold bars hurts my back!"

Anyway. This topic is very amusing! But I think I'll go hide under a bridge or something now.

its like every effort was made to avoid knowing aboutteh predownload, including ignoring experience with previous issue releases.

I don't suffer from altitis, I enjoy every minute of it.

Thank you Devs & Community people for a great game.

So sad to be ending ):

Yep, make a shortcut to City of Heroes.exe and add -project "coh" to the end of it. So it should look like:

"C:\Program Files\City of Heroes\CityOfHeroes.exe" -project "coh"

...Depending on where you installed it of course.
