Introducing John "Protean" Hegner!

Hey everyone!

It is my pleasure to introduce to you John “Protean” Hegner, an extremely talented designer who leads our Mission Department on City of Heroes and is directly involved in all things missions and lore, especially as the stories and world of Praetoria has developed over the last year or so. He has been been driving his mission designers to create engaging, interesting, and gripping missions for not only Going Rogue (the system), but Praetoria mission content as well.

If you have any questions, queries, or comments about anything and everything Mission or Lore-related, Protean is your guy. I wouldn’t trust him, but who can trust Protean anyway? (I kid.) Welcome to the boards, Protean, now get to work!

Greetings!

Thank you for the sterling introduction, War Witch. Requiem sends his regards...

Man, it’s good to finally be able to show my face around here! I’ve been lurking unseen (some say even dead), for some time now. Some of you might know me by Mercedes Sheldon’s Midnighter arcs from Issue 13: The Dirge of Chaos, The Devil’s Timepiece, The Crown of Glory, and The Deadman’s Deck. As my first foray into adding to the robust and amazing world that is CoX I have to say that I had a blast writing those missions.

Since then I have been working hard alongside all the big names here at Paragon Studios to make Going Rogue an amazing addition to CoX. My team is a group of awesome story tellers, dedicated to the craft through and through. We are really looking forward to the day when you can all enjoy the stories we’ve been batting around here for the last year!

Praetoria has been a real treat for me to work on. The art is amazing, the stories are engaging, and the lore has gone into such depth that it’s almost unthinkable to look back at where Praetoria originally came from. The teasers up on the website have my fingerprints all over them, so that should give you some indication of the intricate plot web we are weaving behind the scenes. Again, I can’t wait until you all get to experience it!

I am available to address any questions, comments, or inquiries you may have, whether mission or lore-related. As for my trustworthiness... I’d listen to War Witch. After all, why would you question the motives of someone who is in two places at once?

- Protean

Ohh nice, you wrote the good Midnight Club arcs...sweet.

Also, question!

Are you the one we should congradulate on the well written arcs in the latest issue?

Welcome aboard!

Since you offered to answer lore-related questions...I've noticed that the Moon does not rise in the East and set in the West in either Paragon City nor the Rogue Isles. Instead I last saw it rise out of the South and set in the North. What caused the COX Moon to shift its orbit like that? Or is it just a graphics bug?

Wait wait wait... Protean, the in-game character, was working with the mysterious stranger who has been sending the Ouroboros letters and who directed him to Praetoria in the villain arc. Protean, the red name, says "Requiem sends his regards," and there is reason to believe Requiem might be the one sending the letters given the context of the letter in the Fall of the 5th Column Ouro TF, the only one that's actually the same for both sides.

Is this a subtle hint of the letter-sender's true nature, a slip-up of classified information or an unrelated comment that I'm reading too much in?

Oh, and welcome aboard, Mr. Protean. Sorry about your cloning lab.

*edit*
By the way, does anyone else find it suspicious that a shape-shifter is being introduced by the studio head, and then proceeds to say "Listen to this important person that I totally didn't just impersonate!"

So your to balme for making all the villains do so much zoning on her arcs. Start in the club, zone to cap, zone to nerva, finish hunt and small mission, (no cell), zone back to cap, zone back to club, next mission....

Good story though, just annoying makes me feel like I am playing a Hero.

Welcome to the boards.

Maybe you came away with something that I didn't, but I got the impression that Protean's hidden contact and the letter writer were two seperate persons with seperate agendas.

Hey there. Julian Drake. Mastermind, loosely defined.

You and I, Protea, we have a history, don't we? All I wanted to do was have a joy ride of a time and slaughter my clones for the lulz.

And what do you do? You BREAK IT!

Now, I'm a pretty unreasonable guy. I want everything, and I want it all. And here's my bright shiney. Just give me my clones and the ability to watch populate the Golden Giza and attend a magic act where I kill me brutally for my own amusement. I would been quiet. One mass slaughter. That's it. We had reached a compromise, the universe and me.

But you couldn't have that, could you?

Look, I don't know what universe you're from and looking at you confuses me. Makes my eyes hurt. But I hate you. I hate about as much as I hate anyone that looks at me cross eyed, which is a whole damn lotta hate.

Now, if I see you? Again? In my neighborhood. I'm g'un kill ya. Kill ya bad. And kill ya brutally. Unless Jersey Shore is on.

You better pray Jersey Shore is on.

Well, I have a hard time accepting a storyline that has two faceless, nameless, mysterious strangers clearly weaving grandstanding plans and manipulating people into it. The way the letter-writer uses villain players to get... What was the Invulnerable guy's name? That's the same way he's manipulating Protean. I actually don't remember the storyline minutia, but I left with the impression that Protean was set up so that the player villain could get the job.

Especially considering that the hero-side story arc has the mysterious stranger flatout admit that he's recruiting Protean, I don't really them as different people. It's possible, but doubtful.

So we have a new redname that is a Hydra Lt?

Who's next on the list? Herder? Gunslinger? Bombardier?

Well, welcome anyway. Just don't spit on me.

If the game spit out 20 dollar bills people would complain that they weren't sequentially numbered. If they were sequentially numbered people would complain that they weren't random enough.

Black Pebble is my new hero.

Welcome, Protean, and let me say I enjoyed your Midnighter arcs quite a bit. I'm looking forward to your new stuff in GR.

Wait, I thought that it was Hero 1 or Dr. Aeon or Manticore who was the lead mission designer?

Or was Protean all of them?
