Malta Sappers

I read once upon a time, what best to use against the malta and their sappers. However, as I have aged, my mind has forgotten. Can someone please enlighten me as how best to take the nefarious sappers out without too much pain?

Thanks in advance
Mal

Sappers are fairly resistant to energy attack, so use another type of attack if you have to fight them.

Several of the craftable temp powers have useful side effects (stun, knockback, etc) if none of the above work well for you.

Find them: /macro sap "targetcustomnext enemy alive sapper"

After that, use whatever power you have available to disable them.

Not exactly sure what your asking here. But the correct answer is , Defeat them Fast. Kind'a depends on what AT and power set you're currently playing, as to how you go about doing that.

There's several methods, depending on what you're playing. One that's a favorite of one of my friends is Deceive/Confuse on the Sapper so he drains his buddies instead of you.

The short answer is you want to find them before you attack the group, target them and neutralize them first unless you have significant end drain resistance or a lot of ranged/energy defense. If you're a blaster you want to kill them first and fast... fortunately they're only minions so that shouldn't present a problem as long as you see them first.

So Mez, Confuse or kill them ASAP. As long as you find them before they attack they're easy to deal with. Oh, if you're playing a character without status protection I STRONGLY recommend at least one row of Break Free's in your tray... Malta stuns have an absolutely stupid duration and you WILL get hit by them.

On my Electric Armor scrapper, I leave the sappers until last. I'm effectively immune to energy drain and energy attacks, so there's nothing much a sapper can do to me.

They power dark regen on my DM/DA scrapper

I prefer to use this method for Sapper dispatching: walk right up to them, and AS them just as the rest of your team aggros the spawn.

What? He never said what side he was playing...

This usually works well for me. i use the same basic macro, but i usually have several targetcustomnext chained in the macro, especially by the higher levels.

Example: /macro find "targetcustomnext enemy alive sapper$$targetcustomnext enemy alive Death$$targetcustomnext enemy alive succubus$$targetcustomnext strewth"

The main advantage to macros over binds is that you can easily edit them on the fly by right-clicking them.

Dr. Todt's theme.
i make stuff...

I'll bet I'm faster . I have a bind that allows me to set the targeting bind on the fly.

Like "/bind alt+g beginchat /bind g target_custom_next enemy alive "

My favorite is confuse. My Ill/Emp soloed both Indigo and Crimson's arcs with no problem. I sneak in with superior Invisibility and confuse the Sappers and Gunslinger then just let them help me defeat the rest of the mob with my Phantom Army and Phantasm.

I find insane, leaping scrappers work well.

First time I ran a Malta mish with my elec/elec scrapper I missed seeing a sapper and got hit with the beam. Then I noticed, the beam...it does nothing! Sweet revenge for all the other heroes of mine that got sapped into oblivion.

If you have a confuse power, use that on the Sapper 1st. Then defeat the other enemies while the Sapper drains their endurance, then defeat the Sapper at your leisure If not, then kill the Sapper 1st!

The advantage of Confuse/Deceive from a Mind or Illusion Controller is that you can take the Sapper out of the fight BEFORE the fight begins. Then you can use your alpha strike on other tough foes. Confuse/Deceive lasts so long, that one application will last long enough for most fights to end.

LOCAL MAN! The most famous hero of all. There are more newspaper stories about me than anyone else. "Local Man wins Medal of Honor." "Local Man opens Animal Shelter." "Local Man Charged with..." (Um, forget about that one.)

My first experience with Malta was with my dark/dark tank and I never really gave the sappers much thought. It was a real eye opener when my /sr scrapper did her first mission vs malta. ouch!

Thanks for the macro! I always wondered how to do that. What if the name of the enemy you are looking for is more than one word?

On my AR/Dev blaster, I've found a stealthed Snipe to the head works great for disabling them.

Regardles sof the valid criticisms of snipe powers, watching my character sight down her rifle, pause and then drop a Sapper makes me smile every time.

Alternately: endurance drain resist. (There are powersets that include this, and Speed Boost provides this as well.)

As I play a fire/kin troller, speed boost for my teammates should take care of them and I'll just sneak back out of range without my teammates knowing

Thanks to everyone for the enlightening replies! Various things to try!

I still say they need to buff Sappers.

Malta are the only real challenge left at the moment, may as well make 'em a bit tougher!

Oh, did I mention my main is an Illusion controller with a fondness for confuse?

You don't need to spell out the whole name. The "... sapper" part is just the pattern of the name that you're looking for.

Like if you're targeting Shamans, you can use:
/macro pta "targetcustomnext enemy alive sham"
and it'll pick up Storm Shamans, Death Shamans and Avalance Shamans.
- the 'pta' is the arbitrary name that'll show on your grey macro button.
- the 'targetcustomnext' command lets you cycle your targeting through all the Shamans in your view.
- the 'enemy' subparameter will ignore team mates who might have the pattern "sham" in their name.
- the 'alive' subparameter will ignore the already defeated ones.

Again, since it's a macro, you can right click the macro button to edit it if you're looking for something else, like a hostage (assuming you know what they're named).

I'd think "PITA" would be more appropriate as a name for that macro.

I use a similar one on many characters, my Kelds use a "targetcustomnext void$$targetcustomnext quantum$$targetcustomnext cyst" to find those enemies... I also use a "find" macro for those missions where you're looking for something; "targetcustomnext hostage" or "targetcustomnext nightstar".

Of course I've often wondered if the hostages would have been better off if their parents hadn't named them something like "Sacrificial Victim" or "Helpless Citizen"

I haven't ever heard of one, but is there a way to target by enemy rank? Something that would let you quickly target a boss, EB or AV in a group of minions?
