Discussion: The City of Heroes 2010 Meet and Greet Tour!

I'd also put in a vote for GenCon. The convention center where it'll be held is an excellent facility, and Indy is a great city in which to attend an event. The fact that it's centrally located and easy to get to for many people makes it that much better of a choice.

I posted the following in the HeroCon forum and wanted to include it here as well for feedback purposes...

It allowed far more time for people to hang out, get to know their fellow players and to plan their own unofficial, outside events (like getting dinner with your fellow players, excursions to SF, etc). The players put together some pretty fun stuff on the side and I love the idea that there will be more time for these unofficial gatherings. Plus, the M&G format seemed to give the developers more one-on-one time with the players.

But now that the Bay Area event has been downgraded from Con to M&G, I've heard a lot of the out-of-state regulars saying that they will not be attending because they can't justify the cost of the trip if it's not in a convention format. It's the people who make these events so much fun and I'm really worried for the event if these people opt not to come because of this decision.

I really, really hope that the event planners will find some sort of middle ground between the '07 M&G and '08 HeroCon that will give some really good incentive for out-of-staters to consider traveling to the event. And judging from previous events, I am confident that some of the local players will likely try their best to provide some incentive as well by organizing some fun unofficial gatherings.

I, too, vote for some middle-of-the-country lovin!

Jun 18-20, DucKon in Chicago IL area
Jun 24-27, Origins in Columbus OH
Aug 5-8, GenCon in Indianapolis, IN

I can't afford to travel to either coast from my place "between Chicago and Memphis", but would like the opportunity to be a "fangirl". (Fan-grandmom?)

Word. Earlier announcements mean a higher likelyhood that more people can make plans to attend and buy tickets...

Too bad they're doing PAX West... My vote would be for DragonCon, because A) I could easily do a trip from Florida to Georgia, and B) I have relatives in Georgia that I've been meaning to visit anyway.

I hope there's at least 1 more east coast event you can attend, because I totally missed PAX East... If you went to the Florida Supercon, I'd be sure to travel down there... I might also be able to make plans to attend the Baltimore Comic-Con, if you guys decided to make a trip there...

On a side note.... As someone who has lived in the midwest (Missouri) for over 10 years of my life, I would also throw in a vote for GenCon to show the Midwesterners in our gaming community some lovin'.

May I offer this summary of the entire tour.

Devs on the panel, don't provide any new info or direction then tell us big things are in store for the future of this game...BUT...they can't tell us anything because marketing won't let them. Did I miss anything?

As much as I like that idea, (its about an hour and a half from my place) and I should be attending, I really think Gen Con would be a better idea. A bigger audience, a chance to shine amongst other Super MMOs, and best yet, Ill be there all 4 days :-)

Yes, you seemed to miss the fact that they released the two new powersets, Kenetics Melee and Electricity Control, as well as the new foes in GR amongst other things.

And there was all that crazy info that they told us in person, but swore us to not reveal to anyone else!

Like the [redacted] and, I think it was [redacted] who told us about [redacted].

The coolest thing was getting to see [redacted] while still not knowing about [redacted]until later on when they showed [redacted].

I think it is safe to post all that now though...

The one exception that I can think of is Comic-Con. It's SO huge and targeted right at the theme of City of Heroes, I'd consider that a must-go every year. But really, why do you have to go to PAX? Okay, it's big, so I'm not saying you should never go.

My point is, next year, go to Dragon*Con instead. Its attendance rivals that of PAX, but unlike the result you'll get by going to PAX year after year, you'll be talking to new people, not for the most part the exact same ones that were there last year. And the year before.

But although I suggest this out of self-interest, I think it's only fair to the other cities as well. This year, do Comic-Con and four others in four cities. Next year, do Comic-Con and four others in four different cities. Within three years, if anyone in the U.S. hasn't seen you, it's their own damn fault. And yes, if finances allow, I certainly wouldn't be averse to mixing a European or even Asian city in the mix every year or two.

We've been saving Paragon City for eight and a half years. It's time to do it one more time.
(If you love this game as much as I do, please read that post.)

All the back and forth is nice, but considering it's halfway through May, are we running short of time? Has anybody on the Dev team given even a rough deadline for them to reach a decision?

I saw blizzards campus today...

Don't get me wrong I love this game with all my heart.. but after seeing what blizzard actually HAS...oh god this "city of" dev team needs help in the worst way.

I mean that.

edit: Will some rich-off-their-gourd billionaire PLEASE give City of Heroes a stimulus package so they can at least TRY to advertise!

Read my mind precisely, I was thinking my home state would be perfect, although this year due to the proximity of Comicon to Gen Con Indy it would be hard on the OCR team to pull off two major cons in the same month (and that as an exhibitor, signing on for Gen Con Indy three months before the event requires ritual sacrifice or a very forgiving event staff) I think it won't be possible until 2011 to consider it.

I think one event in the midwest should cap off the year quite well. Gen Con Indy has around 30K attendees, but there's got to be something else near that volume.

That, or give Canada some love.

I'm on the East Coast of the US, but I have to say, that the whole reason that I came to this thread is that it looked like the European player-base wasn't even mentioned.
The people "over there across the pond" are often a bit left in the cold. Being as I'm on the East Coast and seeing the 3 of the 5 events aren't even outside of California!, I just had to say that the European gang deserve a little love too.

And, if it took going to Boston, MA and talking to people there to find out the reasons more people didn't/couldn't go to Hero-Cons, I have to say - shame on you DEVs! READ THE FORUMS!
There has been plenty of discussion on the barriers of getting to Hero-Con in the forums in past years. Yeah, yearS - plural.
But I'm guess I should be glad that the point has finally gotten across...

....at least partially....

....apparently, they didn't talk to you (because this was brought up in the forums and actual people talking to you seem more real or something...I guess that's a sociological thing...) about part of the reason that we think you should be making an appearence at more conventions is to increase the player base.
CoH has zero exposure outside of the web. In the web, CoH's exposure is limited.
The local GameStop employee said "Is that game still around?" when I asked them about CoH:GR. No CoH on the shelves. You'd figure AE Edition or Mac Edition, at least, would still be around if WoW is still on the shelves. I can't believe that there is Champions Online store facing and no CoH of any kind in sight!

CoH needs exposure. Cons are a great way to do it (as it hits the market that is most likely to play the game). All the DEVs need not show. Even one would make the "bill" on most convention flyers - and that in-itself is advertizing.
I'm assuming going to a Con or 5 is cheaper that putting an ad in comics again - which would also be hitting the "target" market ... and hasn't been seen for a very long time.
Any doom to be had for CoH is directly marketing/advertizing related. I love CoH, it is a great game. Too bad it is getting lost in the shuffle.

...oh, well....I guess... getting back to the main point...
We got our one appearance of the DEVS this year in the states outside of Cali.
The European players deserve some DEV love too.

[PS. if it has to be in the States, my vote goes to DragonCon.]

I believe the issue wasn't that the devs didn't understand why more people couldn't make it to HeroCon. The issue, that was clarified at PAX East, was how many people they could reasonably get to come to one of these M&Gs. The turnout at PAX East (which, people physically showing up >>>>> people saying they will on a forum post) convinced them that it was valuable, both for the players and the game, to make these appearances at cons around the country.

I'm nearly positive the 5th location will be in the middle of the country somewhere (it just makes sense).

Just out of curiosity, where are you getting that 3 of the 5 events will be in California? There's PAX East (Boston), PAX West (Seattle), Northern California M&G (California), San Diego ComicCon (California), and 5th yet-to-be-named location. The BayCon appearance was confirmed by Ocho to not be the 5th M&G.

Unless they just posted the 5th one somewhere and I missed it? Quick search doesn't show anything new on the announcement front...

Advertising would get so many subscriptions that their tech support wouldn't be able to keep up <probably one reason they don't advertise>

The numbers of their subscriptions would increase, the money would start gushing in like a broken water main, the budget, the staff, everything would increase, and at last... so would the quality of the game.

...I can dream.
