Veteran Rewards
I can see two sides to this argument.
Long time vets could feel slighted if obtaining rewards were made easy - and recently joining players look at the long list of vet rewards and think "sheesh, I'm never gonna get all them." Here's a potential solution: For every 8 vet rewards (ie 2 years paid game time) a player could purchase the next 4 Vet rewards early - for a fee. However doing so means they don't get the badges, and they don't get different rewards when they play for the next year. Not perfect as a system but it kind of hits a bit of middle ground for those who are impatient. |
QR, wouldn't mind being acknowledged on the US server with the 4+ years I spent EU side. Tis damn annoying losing them because I decided to move from being loyal to Paragon Studios and NCSoft to being loyal to Paragon Studios & NCSoft.
Obviously I knew about it before I switched and weighed it up. It's still a nuisance though.* |

At least that's what Sharker tells me.

A complex unexpected problem or unsolvable dilemma, as in Tackling the budget cuts is sure to open a can of worms. This expression alludes to a container of bait used for fishing, which when opened reveals an inextricable tangle of worms. [1920s] |
Another question for you: why do you think they're called "Veteran" rewards? They exist solely to reward those people who have been playing the game for an extended period of time. It's a thank-you and an incentive for players to keep their subscription active.
Making them "purchasable" cheapens them considerably and removes the reason they were put into the game in the first place. |
I don't have the max 'cuz I started in I3. I just got my 60month not long ago. My account has never lapsed (through my actions, as opposed to through NCSoft making a mistake). I am a 60 month Veteran. I don't care if the cost was $5000, no player with 2 months of experience should ever be able to say he's a 60 month veteran. That's not a Veteran's Reward, it's a bonus pack.
I wouldn't like it but I wouldn't be overly mad if they started to put Vet's reward items/things in bonus packs, but they damn well better never give the badges etc. saying someone has been here for X months when they haven't. That would be a massive slap in the face to those of us who have been around.
(Just to make sure it's obvious, I'm agreeing with you)
--If we can have huge sig images, why can we have only five lines of text?

Here's a few thoughts on this in general. First off, while on the one hand I see the upside in allowing the purchase of vet rewards, I believe I would be against it, despite how much I would really, really like to be able to buy my way up to some of the most recent rewards. So no, I can't really support this idea.
But I do think that the system may need some changes, or at least to come to a halt. There are a couple things to consider in this.
The amount of veteran rewards currently in place is staggering. Six full years. Seventy-two months. Anyone joining the game at this point will be understandably overwhelmed. Anyone who played a bit a few years ago and considers coming back will look at that list and be overwhelmed. And anyone who starts playing now will say with almost complete certainty that they will never achieve the high level rewards, because few people actually believe they will be playing for that long. I can attest from personal experience that for a time, the veteran rewards actually discouraged me from returning to play this game. So continuing to throw more rewards on top of those existing is just adding to what already feels like an impossibly long journey to potential new players or returning players.
Veteran Rewards weren't, if I remember right, in place when the game originally launched. That's right, we were not informed of this system at launch, and therefore those of us who decided not to stick with the game at that time were not given the opportunity to make a fully informed decision. Comparing with another NC game, Aion, where veteran rewards were announced starting from launch, I am fully aware from the start that unsubscribing will keep me from earning rewards, and thus have no real basis to complain that I didn't know what I was giving up. Perhaps not a big deal in the grand scheme of things, but there it is.
I would be of the opinion that the current veteran rewards needs to be ended. Let it stop at 72 months. Maybe add in a final, really nice one for 75. Then create a new system that starts with say, Going Rogue's release. People still working on the original scale start gaining concurrent rewards - one on the new scale, and one on the old, every three months. Those who have gotten to 72 months on the old scale? They stop earning them on that scale, and earn only the new ones. Then, cycle this system every, say, two years. Nothing has to be given away, but then nobody's going to be seven, eight, or more years away from earning the latest reward, so they have less of a staggeringly overwhelming system haging over them.
Another idea that came to me - and I don't know if this would be a good one or not, so I can't say I really support it, just something I thought of that might be interesting to get others' thoughts on.. What if every 6 months, existing accounts got to 'sponsor' one other account up to their current level? I don't know if I like the sound of it. It would give people a lot better way to help their friends. Yeah, come play with me, I can give you veteran rewards up to X months too. But something about it doesn't feel entirely kosher either, so perhaps it's a terrible idea as well.
Either way, I would certainly say the current system needs to be stopped, instead of continuing to add ever more unattainable levels on top of it.

In other words, a small problem that generates much bigger problems if you try to solve it.

Well to be honest The EU servers should be added to the NA server list so we can all game together. This artificially created schism between us is a load of crap.
|
Hell at the moment I'd settle for one subscription allowing to access both sides and keeping the server lists separate if it's such a technical issue.
GG, I would tell you that "I am killing you with my mind", but I couldn't find an emoticon to properly express my sentiment.

Ok, how about a compromise.
1) The Vet reward badges stay as a reward for every three months of paid subsciption, just like now.
2) The powers, costumes and such from the rewards opened up as obtainable options for the rest of the playerbase.

For the most part, the rewards are not choices. You get what you get.
|
Isn't this the system already in place? Every 3 months, a vet reward is opened up and the player can choose to obtain it. |

The Veteran Rewards system is equally fair to everyone. The system was explained clearly before it started. If you want a particular reward, play the game and look forward to it. Failing to do so will get you labelled as a Plantar Wart aka Veruca Salt singing "I want it NOW!":
Veruca Salt: Gooses! Geeses! I want my geese to lay gold eggs for Easter Mr. Salt: It will, sweetheart Veruca: At least a hundred a day Mr.Salt: Anything you say Veruca: And by the way Mr. Salt: What? Veruca: I want a feast. Mr. Salt: You ate before you came to the factory Veruca: I want a bean feast! Mr. Salt: Oh, one of those Veruca: Cream buns and doughnuts and fruitcake with no nuts So good you could go nuts Mr. Salt: You can have all those things when you get home Veruca: No, now!! I want a ball I want a party Pink macaroons and a million balloons And performing baboons and ... Give it to me Rrhh rhhh Now! I want the world I want the whole world I want to lock it all up in my pocket It's my bar of chocolate Give it to me Now! I want today I want tomorrow I want to wear 'em like braids in my hair And I don't want to share 'em I want a party with room fulls of laughter Ten thousand tons of ice cream And if I don't get the things I am after I'm going to scream! I want the works I want the whole works Presents and prizes and sweets and surprises Of all shapes and sizes And now Don't care how I want it now Don't care how I want it now Oompa Loompas: Oompa Loompa doompadee doo I've got another puzzle for you Oompa Loompa doompadah dee If you are wise you will listen to me Who do you blame when your kid is a brat Pampered and spoiled like a Siamese cat? Blaming the kids is a lion of shame You know exactly who's to blame: The mother and the father! Oompa Loompa doompadee dah If you're not spoiled then you will go far You will live in happiness too Like the Oompa Loompa doompadee do |

Where, exactly, is the compromise there? #2 negates #1.

For the record, I ALREADY HAVE up to the 69-month mark, I just think it would be a good idea to let the new players have a chance to at least get the costumes, powers, and such so that they can use them on the off-chance that we see CoH II (or some such) and this game winds up being no longer supported. I would rather see everyone in the game have fun with these powers now than have them be a reward for service. Your mileage may vary (And it does, judging by the rep hits I'm getting from this thread. ).

I posted this in another vet reward thread up in player questions partly in jest but since this is the suggestions thread I'll toss it in here as well.
So here's my idea if the devs decide to end the vet reward system. I've also added a few things since then.
The 10 year mark would be a nice round anniversary. End it all with a special reward.
Permanent unique title: Old Fart <you've been around forever. They just can't get rid of you>
Emote: Get off my lawn!
Emote: Rocking Chair
Extra costume slot with a unique non-customizable 10 yr vet costume.
Temp power: Boring Stories - This power when activated puts people in it's AoE to sleep as the players character starts telling stories about how kids today have it easy fighting crime. Because when he was young he had to fight crime uphill, in the snow, both ways.
Social Security: a 1% increase bonus to Influence/Infamy, Prestige, and Experience to all characters.
Medicare: A 1% Health and Stamina bonus to all characters.
Players have to choose between Social Security or Medicare. A character can't have both.
I know I'm likely showing my age here, but toss in a link to that song (or whatever it is) so that we can hear it to really get the effect.

Honestly, I think the vet reward system was only put in place as part of the limp along philosophy of Cryptic back when they were ready to let this game die out so they could make the Marvel MMO (which didn't pan out)...

Intent aside, the result for me was a reason to stay subscribed during a prolonged period when I had zero time to actually play, and an added incentive to stay subscribed currently, when I have very little time to actually play.
Which over the course of the past year or so has added up to substantially more than they'd have gotten from me by providing no incentive to stay subbed and putting all the 'good' vet rewards in the store.
Seems to me that's 'working as intended'.
And really, they OWE us old timers nifty treats to make up for the horrors we endured in the "good old days" under the Ancien Régime.
If you never had to street sweep Bricks because you ran out of missions or gazed in despair upon an entire level's worth of debt stretching off to the horizon....quit yer whinin'. =P
