"Whine?" Only whining that tends to be done are by those who think they should be able to get anything with their credit card.

I have two accounts. One a year and a half or so newer than the other. Big difference in the vet rewards. Would being able to "buy vet time" or buy rewards benefit me? Yes. Do I support it at all? Not in the least.

About the only modification in all these years I've seen suggested for vet rewards that I can throw any support to is related to costumes (and ONLY those.) Leave the "reward points" (3 mo, etc.) for the costume awards where they are, but pick the set you want. Precedent being the blackwand/nem staff/Sands/Axe.

Other than that, all I can say is "Veteran" does not mean "Credit card balance." They're the only 100% fair reward in the game. They can't be gamed, they can't be PLd, etc. Everyone gets them the exact same way.

..NO..NO...He11 NO

If you can pay for your "vet status" then your not a vet. dispite the vet system rewards later on need working..its something small and nice for those who have played tht long. you want something..play for it not pay for it (minus game time)

if you can pay for your vets..why not pay for badges????? .why not just pay for a lvl 50 completed IO'd all badges toon???- pointless.

Lets see, I've just got my 60 month reward. That works out around $900 ($15 a month for 60 months) in money, and thousands of hours of play time. And you want someone who hasn't supported the game or has only supported the game for 18 months to push their way in front of others for a mere $20?

The Veteran Reward system is a loyalty program. Loyalty programs do not succeed if you allow people to queue-jump.

What you are saying is that you signed up with a Master Card loyalty reward system (to give an example) that offered 1% rebate on purchases, yet you want them to give you $1,000 because you only spent $100 so far. Give me a break.

Personally would vastly more prefer the 'vet choice' system.

let's take a look at what I'd have with a choice system, note these are ACCOUNT based not CHARACTER based, so you can't try out all the vet rewards at 3 months by making different characters.

3 months.
Choice from the costumes pool.

6 months.
Choice from the costumes pool.

9 months.
Choice from the costumes pool.

12 months.
two Choices from the powers pool (this includes Sands of mu/Ghostslaying axe, nem staff/blackwand, mission teleporter, both the non-combat and combat vet pets, assemble the team, Prestige Sprints and City Traveller).
This 12 month two choices is only because the current one awards the Prestrige Sprints AND the sands of mu/ghost slaying axe choices. For 24, 36 etc. there would only be one powers pool choice.

Then the cycle repeats itself.

Things like the base items are given out on the current months they're given out as, let's face it, most people can wait for base items (they're not an 'oooh awesome' moment and usually an additional feature along with another reward).

Personally, I've never been a fan of the veteran reward system. I've always felt that my greatest reward for playing a cool game is... Well, having played a cool game. More in-game resources would be cool, but I find exclusive items as veteran rewards is far too limiting for newer players. Sure, I enjoy my purty boxing gloves, but I don't enjoy them because other people DON'T have them. I know that, at least for myself, getting into a game and being faced with a three-year wait for something simple I want is more likely to turn me off than to inspire me to stick around that long.

That said...

I've always been even LESS a fan of people who feel that a gold credit card entitles them to everything they set their eyes on. Call me petty, call me a communist, but there's just something satisfying in spiting people who feel they should be able to just buy everything NOW. These aren't big things, they don't need hard work. They're just perks you get for sticking around. As such, I'd sooner just make them available for everyone than have them purchasable. I realise people would complain if veteran rewards were just opened up, but I'd understand. Making them purchasable, however, would be insulting, at least in my eyes.

The only people whining about this are the ones that don't want to wait for their rewards like everyone else.

And as you can see I'm well aware of what it's like to start a new account and not have access to all the rewards my main account has.

Guess what . . . I'm still against changing the vet reward system. The way it awards vet rewards is fair and unbiased. No one gets them before they've earned them, regardless of how much money they have burning a hole in their wallets.

Yes, Aett, I have played continuously since June 04. Kali likes to take breaks, not me.

I don't have to *cheat* at anything as I'm already up to the Genuine badge, I just thought it would be good for the game for the newer players (that far outnumber all of us old-timers, in case you missed it) to actually have a chance to use what we tend to take for granted.

To be honest, if you're subscribed just to get a vet reward every three months, then I really don't know what to tell you.

Yes, as a 69-month vet, that's kind of what I'm proposing. The Devs have already set a couople of precedents for this, the latest one being that Issue 17 will allow people access to the VEATs/EATs at levle 20 instead of 50. I would be all for bumping up people to the current vet reward range every anniversary for free instead of using the in-game store.

First off, I would like to know where you're getting your numbers from. Not that I have them, but I highly doubt that you know for certain how many new gamers there are versus the old timers.

Secondly, nobody here is saying that they signed up only for the vet rewards, just that the system is working exactly as it was described to work, which is offer a small reward every three months of subscription time.

Considering that the game worked just fine in a much harsher-for-new-characters environment without the Vet Rewards, I think that new players will be just fine without them. If you want me to create a new character that uses none of the vet rewards, I will do so, and be just fine as well.

Has anyone mentioned the Devs said no to this before it was ever asked.

Not "not at this time", "we don't currently have a system in place", "we don't have the time to invest", or any other "maybe if we can work it in later" answer but a straight forward "NO!" with the reason why before the system was even live?

I agree.

Money shouldn't buy you everything in the game.

It is true that a Vet is paying for that time, but they are also have been paying too play for that amount of time.

The VET rewards are earned by time. The money is just a side-effect of spending that time.

It open the whole can of worms on buying everything in the game with real world dollars - levels, badges, enhancements, etc. ... but not including uber powers.

"Gee, I'm Richie Rich(tm)!
"I'm the most powerful player in City of Heroes and I only had to give the DEVs $10,000 to make me be able to one-shot anyone I fight with no ACC check, complete invisibility - I turn it off so I can gloat over my fallen foes, and a special l337 power that makes it look like I'm being hurt, but always increases my hps so that I never actually fall in battle."

I know that wasn't the intent of the original posters post, but that is where this kind of thing will end up going in the end.
I don't think anyone want to see it go there, except for maybe Richie Rich(tm).

Those of us that have spend time playing the game for so many years deserve a little something to gloat over for being such old farts in the game. They have been actively giving away our badges for being at the early anniversaries already and that didn't even give anyone any powers that I know of. Heck, let us old timers have something for being loyal to the game for so many years.
The game is still playable with Training, DO, and SO enhances. It is definitely playable without Vet Powers or any Booster Pack powers.
In fact, there are Day Job powers that you can get that are at least as powerful as most of the Vet Powers.
You can buy Respecs already.

No. Please DEVS! Don't allow someone who is just purchasing the game to buy up their VET reward status so it appears to me in game that they have been around as long as I have just because they have the money to throw around.

Yeah, I started a thread suggesting something like this and I quickly found out why it's a bad idea.

Although, I still stick with my stance that the 60 month Vet Reward is completely unfair.

I think PS should take any chance they can get to make more money so why not but they should make each vet reward the price of each interval so 45 dollars for every three months.

They already let you pay for vet rewards in advance. You even get a discount if you pay 3 months, 6 months or 1 year in advance. They only require that you wait for the time to pass to unlock them just like everyone else. Deal with it.

Veteran Rewards Program

This program rewards our fans for their time spent supporting and playing City of Heroes® and City of Villains®!
What you are asking for completely defeats the purpose of the system in question.

Setting Epic ATs to unlock lower doesn't. No comparison.

Veteran Rewards FAQ:
Quote:
Q: My account is no longer active. Can I still receive my rewards?
A: Yes. All you need to do is reactivate your account via credit card or game time card and the appropriate level of awards will appear for your characters. Just log in and they will be waiting for you. Note: the time that your account was not active does not count towards your rewards.
Q: Can I pay for a certain number of months into the future in order to receive my rewards now?
A: No. The rewards are for the number of months with an active paying account and this only applies to past time, not future time.
Q: I have multiple accounts, some newer than others. Will my rewards for my oldest account apply to my other accounts as well?
A: No. Rewards are specific to each account.
All this information was available before launch of the program, and is still accessible from the main website.

I've heard from many people in game that they bought the ninja booster and quickly removed all their travel powers because of Ninja Run.

People can already buy veteran rewards.
It's called paying your sub for 60+ months.

So, no. It's not going to change. No, it wouldn't benefit 'New Players' because they will still be learning the game when they first sub.
And, no, it shouldn't change.
Because nothing is going to stop this suggestion from being really bloody stupid.

How is that, in any way, shape, or form a precedent?

Counter: The devs have been on record for years and *repeatedly* that setting Khelds as a level 50 unlock was a mistake. They set VEATs the same way out of "parity." People have played for years and never gotten to 50. Others get PLd there in a matter of days (or hours, under some older exploits that were thankfully crushed.)

They have never said anything of the sort regarding Veteran Rewards. They've been satisfied with the program ... well, for years now. Again, it's the fairest reward program out there - everyone gets them at the same amount of (actively subscribed) time, the same way. You don't need additional money, time running TFs, time to farm, don't have to play the market, play 20 hours a day, attend raids, run certain missions or whatnot. You just have to *be here.*

Ooh, Dave Miller got a spiffy watch for working here for 25 years! If I give you some money can I have one too? So what if I've only worked here 6 months, I'll give you money!

Would it be fair to let someone BUY the watch that Mr. Miller received as a gift for his loyalty?

So, how would it be fair to let someone BUY veteran status?

It wouldn't. Just because you have money to spend does NOT mean you're entitled to buy things given as a gift for loyalty.

You're not paying for veteran rewards, you're paying to play the frigging game.

"But it's not faaaaaaaiiiiiiiirrrrrr!!!!!"

Bull. It's perfectly fair. You're just mad because you're not getting your way.

I'm sure we can find a grocery store aisle for you to kick and scream in if we look hard enough.

I'd rather they try holding their breath til they turn blue.

Heck I'd even help them put the plastice bags over their heads.

I can see two sides to this argument.

Long time vets could feel slighted if obtaining rewards were made easy - and recently joining players look at the long list of vet rewards and think "sheesh, I'm never gonna get all them."

Here's a potential solution: For every 8 vet rewards (ie 2 years paid game time) a player could purchase the next 4 Vet rewards early - for a fee.

However doing so means they don't get the badges, and they don't get different rewards when they play for the next year.

Not perfect as a system but it kind of hits a bit of middle ground for those who are impatient.

I disagree. The vet rewards are more than just how much cash you paid.... it's a "thank you" for your loyalty and involvement in the game and the community. It represents not only your monthly fee, but your activity in the game... how much you've supported CoH/CoX in the past.

It means you're a veteran of "x" number of months. The higher that number is, the more you have experienced and you have to be proud of.

"Buying in" would be much like walking out of collage and into the big corner office in a building where everyone else who has one had to work for. It cheapens it for everyone that actually worked their way from the ground up for the same perks. The actual "veterans" of the company.

Right now those "hash marks" are nothing more than arbitrary numbers that stand in the way of some kind of minor little goodies. But be patient, put in your time and you'll earn them just like us "beta brats" did. Then, those vet badges will actually mean something to you.... and then you'll be the one making a reply to the next post like this.
