The Cursed Sorcerer welcomes you to this game. Here's some advice if you play as a Scrapper: Avoid Super Speed. It is hard to control and it can make you vulnerable to attack if you play PvP content.

I'm a little late for the "pile on the newb" party, but WELCOME Syfy! Glad to have you here. Remember, we were ALL n00bz at one point, so don't be shy about asking about anything that comes up. The dumbest question is the one you DON'T ask.

Welcome SyFy!

My recommendation to start off is a Scrapper with the Regen second powerset. It has a nice self-heal, and a power called Quick Recovery that gives you back endurance well -- an empty blue bar slows you down a lot at first, and that power will help a ton. Otherwise, just pick whatever primary attack set sounds cool to you and go beat people up!

Also, joining teams is pretty easy. If you are fighting outdoors, click on 'team' over your chat window and select 'Looking For Any' from the drop-down menu. People will find you. I also recommend high population servers , such as Freedom or Virtue, if you prefer teaming. More people = more invites.

Have fun on your trip to 50. Getting there is the best part! (no really!)

Try all the ATs out!

As someone who's first toon was a Scrapper. Who's first toon to 50 was a scrapper (different thatn my first toon tho). And who has more Scrappers at 50 than any other AT, know this...

...just because it's an easier AT to get used to, doesn't make it the best choice to start out with.

You play your scrapper get it to 50, and you will realize...OMG! These other ATs (except Tank) DIE SO EASILY!

All that said, find a combo that looks good to you, and play it. Best way to go really.

And second, as you start to get your feet under you,
Thunderforce has a list of things you might want to do at each level of your character's life.
Things to Do Guide at different levels.
It is good to look at if you are just bored and want reminders of things you might want to do at your level.
It is good to look at to plan if you want to achieve some of those things before you outlevel the ability to do some of the things.
.
Just a couple notes about these:

First, keep in mind the date of the posts in the first thread. While there is some good information there, a lot of it is outdated, either by things changing, the community now having a better understanding of game mechanics, or both.

Second, with super-sidekicking, flashback and such, there's actually very little that you will outlevel and not be able to go back to. With that said, though, I do suggest you do at least one mayhem/safeguard every 5 levels (starting at level 5) for the temp power and exploration badge, and spend the time to level up, experiencing the content and getting used to each power rather than trying to rush to 50.

I'll also second (third, etc) the suggestions for Paragon Wiki, the VidiotMaps Map and Icon patches, and Mids' Hero Designer.

Another thing to keep in mind, especially if you've played other MMOs or similar games: in many games, a team works best with, or even requires, a damage sponge, a healer and a nuker (sometimes referred to as "the trinity"). CoH/CoV is very much not like that. For all but a very, very few end-game missions and events, nearly any team can work well.

Related to that point, healing is not the be-all-end-all of keeping the team alive. Buffs and debuffs are very powerful in this game, and a well-played defender / controller / corrupter / dominator / mastermind can make the team so powerful they don't need heals, or make the enemies cower in fear, never hit anything, do less damage, constantly fall down, or even attack each other instead of you. And unlike the support classes of many games, they can do this while still dealing damage to the enemies.

Welcome to the game!

Welcome Syfy.

Lots of great advice in the last few pages which I won't bother to recap.

But I will toss out one piece of advice which has tripped up a few of my frinds when they started out. If you look on your zone map you will see symbols such as T (tram) and F (ferry), these are used to transition to other zones and, unlike some MMOs, you can use them even if you've never been to that zone before.

Also this game is very forgiving, don't be afraid to try different things out.

Welcome Syfy!

Just a quick comment to add to all the great advice in this thread. Learning how power Enhancements work can take some time. They are those little round things you put in the round slots that come with each power. And you get more slots to add to powers as you level.

It will take time and research on your part to really get their benefits. Because they let you customize each of your powers: Improve accuracy, damage, recharge time, etc. I highly recommend just slotting accuracy enhancements in the early levels. Because I like to hit more--missing less--even though I do less damage.

Welcome to my all time favorite MMORPG.

Just remember that at the low levels its really only the power choices that seperate the ATs. As you level higher the difference in the "roles" of the ATs become more obvious.

Hope you have fun here!

You mean the choice between Kalinda and Burke when you leave the tutorial? They are quite close to each other; they just have different missions. Unlike heroside, where it's a choice between the Atlas and Galaxy zones.

Unlike hero-side, both villain contacts are in the same area. The only difference is the initial string of missions.

Both of the initial villainside contacts, Kalinda and Burke, are in Mercy Island. Personally I'd go with Kalinda, who's more directly involved in the big CoV storyline, and the next contact she introduces you to, Mongoose, gives out a really fun bank robbery mission.

Ok thanks folks. I tried out the MM last night and I love it actually.. Just the area itself is not the greatest lol. and the lack of people =( I didnt see many on the red side. is that natural or did I just come in at a bad time?

Unfortunately Villains only have one starting zone. You get a choice of two different contacts but they are both in the same zone. Once you get a few levels (level 5 I think) you can go to Port Oakes and meet a Broker who will open up Newspaper missions for you. If you do 3 newspaper missions you'll get a Mayhem Mission which is basically a Bank Robbery set in one of the Hero Zones (specifically Atlas Park). This is one of the two ways to get a Raptor Pack which will allow to to fly for a total duration of two hours (more than enough to last until you get a travel power of your own assuming you don't waste it).

If you're going to try and run a Mastermind, you may want to eventually track down a solid set of Mastermind binds, because they are rather complicated to control, and whoever was responsible for making UI extensions for controlling them seem to have had his brain loafs reversed and forgotten that we STILL don't have a decent set of built-in controls.

I'd personally suggest one of two things: either track down the Numpad controls guide (can someone post a link to that?), or just PM me and I'll give you a custom-made set done to your specifications. Yes, seriously. Just give it some time to amass a few more pets and get comfortable with the game itself, as they'll make things a bit more complicated. I'd probably avoid looking for binds at least until you get your lieutenant-class henchman.

On Freedom ? Probably mostly it was the wrong time. However, one difference between heroside and villainside is that people don't hang out in Mercy much, as opposed to heroside where people often hang out in Atlas. Mercy is something of a dead end, while Atlas is more of a hub.

Also, Freedom has a hefty population of powerlevelers who hop up to higher level zones, which I would avoid if I were you. Powerlevelling, especially for someone new to the game means you end up with a high level character you don't know how to play.

I've never seen those vids before those are FRIKKIN HILARIOUS! I laughed so hard my whole office had to ask what I was watching.

Too bad it was all an "inside joke" for CoH-ers, and I couldn't share!

Wow were those funny.

The first one especially.

Thx Dr. HR!!!

Syfy, I'm on Freedom as well, but don't play Villains much. Look me up hero-side @Cougarific, happy to team with you and answer any questions that might come up!

And, y'know, everyone says Scraps or Tanks to start out, but I'll tell ya - I started out on a Blaster (many years ago), and if you can master the tactics of Blaster-dom, all the other ATs are a *snap* (until you get your Epic at 50 - Kheldians are a bit complex).

P.S. by the way, the standard "rule of thumb" is (or so I've heard/seen here on the Forums), at any time on Freedom, about 2/3 are doing Heroes stuff, 1/3 Villains, so Yes, generally less activity Villain-side.

It's great that you're having fun. Make sure you tell your friends about this game.

On redside Mercy Island tends to be mostly empty outside of afternoons and evenings on the weekend. Mercy Island is easily left behind between level 5 and 8, and there's few reasons to go back after that, so very often characters don't need to be there for more than a few hours of game time.

Port Oakes is good until the mid teens, but Cap au Diable and Grandville are the biggest hubs for villains.

Cap au Diable more so than Grandville since it has a Ferry (travels to the most popular zones including Grandville), Black Market (auction house), University (crafting center), Midnighter Club (access to higher level co-op zone called Cimerora that's gated 36+), Vanguard DPO (access to a co-op zone called the Rikti War Zone that allows all levels, but contact chains don't open until 35+), and Bloody Bay (a PvP zone that also has a quest that grants a renewable temp power that allows you to summon one of the game's most powerful pets five times) all in one area.

Dr. Todt's theme.
i make stuff...

The zones in CoV can get annoying since you basically start in slums, ruins and wasteland, and have to fight your way up to the shinier, swankier neighbourhoods.

Starting with a Mastermind isn't a bad idea; once you get the hang of those, everyone else seems easy.

Thanks. I knew the dates, and it has been a great, ongoing thread. The most recent posts in it are about 5 months ago.
I challenge you, or anyone to read through a couple pages of that thread, no matter how long a veteran, and not learn some things they wish they had known earlier.

... Depends on how you play. Very often, If I don't do it the first time, I don't bother going back later on that alt.
As you mentioned, I like to get those temp travel powers from the mayhem missions as early as possible, while they are still useful before I get a real travel power.
And I like to get things like the temp Nemesis staff, or other things that list reminds a person of, earlier in life than waiting and going back for them at 50. To me, that sort of thing is meaningless to me after I have already hit 50, or late in alt life. (He does keep his things to do list up to date.)

Thanks though.
