The easiest class to play-- and play well-- is the Scrapper. You have nothing to monitor and no other role than to deal DPS. Brutes and Tanks are also quite effective, but are better when you understand how to manage agro. Brutes are arguably the most effective of the three, but have a Fury mechanic that you must adhere to which hinges on a balance of endurance, fast attacks, and agro.

Blasters and Corruptors are both good ranged ATs. Masterminds are extremely effective, but can be a little dull unless you take the time to learn Macros and Binds.

My favorite AT in the game is the Dominator class. These toons can be wickedly effective when fully enhanced with Invention Origins and operating as a what players call a Perma-Dom. This class offers Control/Range/Melee, and can actually exceed most other ATs in all 3 vectors if built properly.

As far as what AT (class) to choose, it would really depend on your play style but I'd suggest for a beginner to try out Defenders. They aren't generally the most "super" of the ATs but they are almost always needed and appreciated by teams.

Good luck!
Welcome to the game, I'd really not advise you not to play a defender when you are new the game as they quite weak offensively.

You should really start playing a defender once you've gotten used to the game. As others have said that the scrapper is a good starting class for the beginner, because of the high damage it can do.

Welcome to the City!

I'll add my voice to those saying scrapper, if you prefer melee, or blaster if you prefer hanging back at range. On villain side, the brute and corrupter are somewhat analogous.

Thanks folks have a good great one.
Translation :: Hello all. I just ran around in the City/Isles for the first time last night! So far it's lots of fun. I'm not sure what archetype is good for starting players, so I'm looking for suggestions. I'm looking forward to meeting people in the game and joining a supergroup (or villain group). I'm looking to PL to 50 to see what this game is about.

Hmm. At least that's the way I read it.

Okay, so the terminology is different here. Noob is an insult. I only see it thrown around in CoH by jerks - yeah, I'm serious.
This is - at the core - a friendly and helpful community of players.

To get help while you are running around in the City or Isles, you can use the [Help] channel by typing /hc [message]. That is what the [Help] channel is there for.

Since you are new, I would suggest making one of every archetype and seeing which you like best.
If you are looking for easiest to play and most survivable, I would suggest
  1. scrappers or tanks on the Hero-side or brutes on the villain side.
  2. Willpower or Regen for a Defense set
  3. I would avoid Dual Blades to start with as they are the only melee set with combos
It is quite easy to meet tons of people in the City/Isles. I meet new people practically every time I play.

Getting in a Super group or Villain group is easy as looking in the SG/VG Recruiting Threads here in the forums ( http://boards.cityofheroes.com/forumdisplay.php?f=566 ) or simply yelling out in Atlas or Mercy
-
/b I'm looking for a Supergroup.
-
There are probably there is already someone out there yelling
-
/b I'm from Supergroup X. We have all the gear and tp'rs to everywhere. We are cool because of this and this. Looking for active players.
-
That might work for you. I think it is better to PuG (pick up group) for a while. You will probably get people offering you a spot in their SG and you can see how they play and make a call if that is what you are looking for.
Joining a SG doesn't always mean that you will have people to team with, some SG's are just about inviting new players for the prestige that they generate for the SG, so if you are not pleased with the first SG you join - don't feel stuck, there are plenty more of them out there.

Okay. Don't rush to get a 50. Seriously. This is not a game where level 50 is the end-all-be-all. There, fortunately, still is no End-Game in CoH. The fun of CoH is the journey, the cool battles, and the combos of powers that you use and others use around you.
If you are here to grind and "win" the game, then I think you have already lost.
The City is about the Flavor. Enjoy it and it will reward you. There is a lot to experience, and you will miss out on a bunch of it if you try to just rush through the game.
In fact, one of the things you can do when you hit even as low as level 25 is to go back in time and run the earlier missions!

So I suggest running around and enjoying the City.
Don't let yourself be dragged down into the Sewers right off the bat. (Don't tell me the first thing you want to do when you start playing a Superhero game is to act like it is a Fantasy game and run around in the Dungeons). Avoid the AE. (The AE can be cool, but new players are often sucked into something that doesn't resemble normal game play at all because of the kinds of players that want to lure low level characters into AE missions.)
Get some starter missions and explore the City. They will teach you things that many people miss out on - a feeling for the City. The starter missions will run you around a bit, but there is nothing to stop you from stopping some purse-snatching, etc along the way.

So good luck and have fun in the City.
I know I always do.

That's kind of the reason I suggested he start off as a defender, once he plays a scrapper everything else is... meh...

Also playing a defender you'll never find yourself lacking a team or being left off a TF.

Welcome to what is, imo, a brilliant game and community.

I can't really build on what others have said, as I think they've said it all (or at least pointed you in all the right directions to do some research yourself). This game isn't 'hard' - sure, it has mechanics and systems that you will learn if you put your mind to it (or simply stick around long enough), but largely you can play it without much difficulty.

I'd strongly suggest you go to the places other forumites have mentioned. I have no problem helping someone new to the game, but when I'm expected to spoon-feed them I get annoyed. This is just a personal thing and may not be representative of the player-base. The reference sources you've been given will, quite honestly, answer most (if not all) of your questions (including, in some respects, spoon-feeding you as paragonwiki.com does in relation to where the badges are for accolades, with pictures!).

Anyway, I hope you have fun. Remember to try all the archetypes, join teams, join task/strike forces and generally experience what this game has to offer (both in terms of gameplay and community).

Influence is what heroes accrue. Infamy is what villains accrue. They're the same thing, but cannot be exchanged one for the other. Kind of like an Russian ruble and an Australian dollar - both currency, but you generally can't spend them in the other country.
Just to nit-pick, yes mechanically it is the games money. If you play the Villain side, their equivalent is called infamy, both use the abbreviated form inf. However, much like the game's use of the term 'defeat' rather than 'arrest' or 'kill' influence is left vague to fit a larger variety of concepts. If you want a character that's Bruce Wayne levels of rich, then it represents vast amounts of capital at the character's disposal. However, if you want someone in a lower earnings bracket, it can be referred to as 'good will' and basically people give your hero stuff for free because of the good he or she has done for the community. Whatever you decide to call it, it all spends the same, though.

Welcome to the game and the forums. Not really any advice I can give above what everyone else said, except maybe just don't be afraid to start over. Try out the game as much as you can; this is the best alt-friendly game I've ever played. I've been playing for just shy of 6 years and there's still stuff I haven't done; still power combinations I haven't played.

Welcome to CoH!

It's been said many times already, but I'll say it again: Relax, and enjoy the journey. This is a game made for alts; start off with some Scrapper or Tanker sets, but try them all in the end. Really create a character you can love, it makes it all the sweeter.

Hello! and welcome aboard. As for what the others have posted above, this is true. My first hero to 50 was a scrapper and my first villian was a master mind.

Make other AT's (Arch-Types) so you can get a general feel for them so when you play against or with one you would know what to expect from them.

Once again,Welcome and have fun...

Prometheus: ... so what I told you was true, from a certain point of view.
Me: From a certain point of view?
Prometheus: You're going to find that many of the truths we cling to depend greatly on your point of view.
Me: You're right about that. Power Blast is very pretty from a certain point of view. But that point of view is not head-on. <Kaboom> - Arcanaville.

Hello Syfy welcome to the game. I am sure you will enjoy it. It's like nothing else out there and you have joined up at a good time. You will have a chance to get your feet wet before Going Rogue comes out and revamps the game (for the better it is looking like more and more).

As far as the archetypes go all of them are good and suprisingly well balanced. Some powerset combinations tend to do certain things better then others, but all of them have good points to work with.

I am gonna list out the hero side AT's with some thoughts about each of them. My preferences definitely are not the be all end all. I am just offering some friendly observations.

Heroside AT's

Scrapper-(Melee DPS, Survivability), Probably the quickest leveler in the game. Really good damage and decent survivability. They are a bit squishy at first but can become excellent at survival late game.

Tankers-(Survivability, Melee DPS), Level nicely solo as well because of how tough they are. Their damage especially at low levels isn't that stellar. Their attacks come in later but once you get into the mid 30's they can do some respectable damage.

Blaster-(Ranged DPS, Melee DPS, Light Crowd Control), Lots of damage early, mostly ranged, lowest survivability in the game. This AT generally survives by the "killing stuff before it can kill you" form of mitigation. I find you have to play with a more strategic mindset when soloing a blaster. Though certain sets offer light crowd control to help you survive. This archtype is probably in the mid range for leveling. It can kill stuff real fast but is more prone to faceplant.

Controller- (Crowd Control, Support, Ranged DPS). Slow leveling AT at first but when they start getting into their mid 30's, they can really take off. This AT survives mainly by various crowd controls and does most of its damage through the same means. It is also one of the more varied AT's certain combinations of powerset choices can really change how you play one controller from another.

Defender- (Support, Ranged DPS) Slower leveling AT. If you are used to a game having a "healer class" this is the closest you will come to one in this game. Though thinking of Defenders as "healers" as a whole is erroneous. A number of Defender primary powersets don't even have a heal. But they all have ways to help themselves and their team survive, through either buffs, debuffs, controls or the aforementioned heals.

In the end all of the archetypes can be leveled solo. Just some are quicker and/or easier then others. One final thing to note is that even within an archetype you will find very noticable differences depending on what power sets you choose. For example an empathy or force field defender is going to level a lot slower then a kinetics, storm or radiation defender.

Better yet try them all, and all the others as well.

Oh, and at level 5 you'll get a pop up from a contact called the Architect Entertainment Manager. IGNORE him. In fact stay out of the AE building altogether, at least for a while until you've seen the world.

And play Villains
as an addition to this, play both, but do try villains, heroes came first, and many lessons were learned that make the villain process much more streamlined. plus one of our more unique and viscerally enjoyable features is the "mayhem mission" a free roaming (within a set area) mission where you can destroy cars, trucks, and basically most non building and non civilian things(and no, you cant kill civilians,). the official reason is to cause diversion so that you can rob a bank and complete the mission, but once you throw down a good area of effect attack and blow up an everything in a particularly crowded alleyway, or even better a parking lot, you will get a drift as to the real reason to do them. because it makes you feel really powerful.

heroside, scrappers are the easiest, tanks live longer, but generally have a lower damage output. play one eventually, but to get an overview, try scrappers first. redside, i prefer brutes, for newer players, masterminds are also very strong, and i personally like dominators, but they can be a very vulnerable class if you arent familair with the flow of gameplay, so hold off and brute it first, would be my advice.

oh and a common thing you may hear, blueside=hero content, redside=villain content. just to clear up any semantic confusion.

Welcome syfy !!
Along with the great info above,
Here are a couple of nice references:

First, pages and pages of posts titled "Little Things I Wish I Had Known" from the start.
Lots of tips and items that inform new players and old. . . . Mountains of stuff!

And second, as you start to get your feet under you,
Thunderforce has a list of things you might want to do at each level of your character's life.
Things to Do Guide at different levels.
It is good to look at if you are just bored and want reminders of things you might want to do at your level.
It is good to look at to plan if you want to achieve some of those things before you outlevel the ability to do some of the things.

Welcome to the game. Listen to what the others have to say, as there is some pretty good advice out there.

For my part, I'll go the abstract way. One of City of Heroes greatest strengths by far is the ability to make the game your own. This game will look how you want it, play how you want it and feel how you want it. Don't be too concerned with finding a "good" way to play it. Instead, look for a way that YOU like.

For starters, don't feel constrained by the theme of the game. Yes, it's a somewhat four-colour comic book inspired universe, but that doesn't mean you have to follow suit. Want to play a cowboy? Go ahead. Want to play an angsty darkity brooding hero? Sure, why not? Want to play a robot from another world? The sky is the limit. Furthermore, look up the Hero Corps Field Analysts (hero-side) and Fortunata Fateweavers (villain-side) and tweak your difficulty setting. The baseline is decent, but you can go up from there or down from there. You can pick if you want to fight really tough enemies for the sense of challenge, or do like me and fight kind of weak enemies, but LOTS of them.

Basically, the city is your playground and you set the rules. Don't let the game control you. You control the game, and the more you make use of that control, the more the game can suit your every desire.

I would like to chime in with Samuel here.

The beauty of this game is its customization. Beginning with the character creator, to choosing missions & difficulty levels, to "tricking out" your powers with cool enhancements... YOU get to choose your path(s).

Unlike many other MMO's, CoH is not exactly "loot" based, at least not in the same way that you might be used to. The "loot" (salvage) you pick up is intended for use in crafting enhancements for your powers (or you can sell it). ANYONE can make nearly any kind of enhancement that they may need or want. You are not necessarily strapped to grinding for that one special piece of loot.

There are several ways to aquire any recipe or salvage that you may find yourself in need or want of. When you have the time and inclination, you will want to become familiar with the Auction House (Wentworth's), the merit system, and the AE ticket system... They each provide different methods for obtaining enhancement recipes and salvage.

A couple more tips:

-- Join the most active global chat channel for your server. You can usually find out what that channel is by asking in the server forums.

-- Pwiki is your friend. I have several pages bookmarked, and often have it up in the background while I'm playing.

-- Mid's Hero Planner is your friend. I wish someone had pointed me to this fabulous little program early on. Could have saved me some grief in planning my powers on some of my characters.

Welcome to the game and good hunting!

For first toons I'd definitely recommend Scrapper and the Regen primary.

It's the easiest to use of all the secondaries, it's a bit click heavy (since you focus on heals) but it has a power called 'quick recovery' available at level 4 which means that unlike most other secondaries you don't need to pick up swift/hurdle, health and finally stamina to make your endurance bar a little bit more manageable.

I would avoid Dark armor because it's a very complicated and endurance heavy set to play, been playing the game over three years now and still never got into it but that's a personal recommendation.

Any of the primaries are fine, some are AoE focused, some are single target focused.

CoH basically invented the 'scrapper' type DPS (we're a tropenamer in that regard over at TVtropes). Unlike almost all over MMOs where the melee DPS is usually a glass cannon, scrapper of all types are very survivable second only to tanks.

If you're coming from WoW Scrappers are like harder hitting Retribution specced Paladins or Fury specced Warriors, they can do easily enough DPS and have the surviability to tank everything except Archvillains (where a Tank, Brute or Mastermind with taunt comes into affect).

The community is MILES ahead of any MMO community I've come across, the vast majority of people ingame are willing to help answer questions about anything game related without any kind of sarcastic bite that usually comes with such response in games like WoW.

The forums can be a bit daunting and yes we do bicker but we're a lot friendlier place than most other game forums.

Sorry, couldn't resist.

Welcome to the game and the forum, Syfy!

I'm not going to reiterate all the wonderful advice that my learned co-players have thrown your way with great abandon (and if any of the stuff they've said doesn't make sense, I'll let you in on a little secret - we tend to tell people everything, because we all love this game, and we want YOU to love it, too.
